Google is making smart contact lenses

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/103165-google-is-making-smart-contact-lenses/

- not full PC (not a glass competitor)

- does contain processor & antenna as well as glucose sensor

- LED lights for indicators

- not sure how they are powering it.

- Wearable future - not everything needs to be a full phone (looking at you, Neptune Pine) but rather it just all needs to be connected.

Mac pro hackintosh made in a real trashcan

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/102968-mac-pro-hackintosh-made-from-trash-can/?hl=trashcan

  • Core i3 (Haswell)

  • Gigabyte z87n wifi

  • Radeon 7750

  • SDD & HDD

  • ATX PSU

- Obviously nowhere near the price

- Obviously nowhere near the performance of a Mac Pro

- True Mac pro class trash PC more like this: http://www.geeky-gadgets.com/trash-can-pc-case-mod/

- Once again Apple didn’t invent the trash PC idea. Just teasing, Apple ;)

Steam Developer Days + Other info

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/102748-revamped-steam-controler/

- remove touchscreen in the middle,

- ABXY buttons replaced with 2 4way-Dpads(just looks like 2 sets of ABXY buttons)

- Twitter Blitz:  What kind of controller will you use with your Steam Machine?

gabe quotes

We're trying to make it as open as possible. If EA wants to put Origin on it, that would be fine, etc... (trying to pick an example of something that people think we would prohibit).

Looking to discontinue Greenlight

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/valve-looking-to-discontinue-steam-greenlight-and-steam-os-may-have-exclusives/1100-6417155/

stream greenlight going away “Not because it isn’t useful, but because we’re evolving”
"There will certainly be experiences on Steam Machines that won't be available anywhere else."

"Exclusives for @steam_games will be natural and not forced."

Valve has stated previously they will not create "an exclusive killer app for Steam OS," but that ultimatum obviously does not apply to other developers.

Japan uses anime to recruit defense forces

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/102342-anime-mascots-increase-japans-self-defense-force-applications-by-20/

not much to say here, kinda funny

Many major powers have used “pinups” as recruitment methods

Ground Self-Defense Force (Army) is characterized by Momoe Kibi, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (Navy) has Mizuho Seto, and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (Air Force) is typified by Airi Bizen.

mac pro can be used sideways

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/97224-mac-pro-can-be-used-sideways/

Who…? Why?

Warns to be careful of rolling and blocking intakes and output air, warns not to have hot output of one going into the intake of another

Surface pro 2 shipping

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/96742-surface-pro-2-rev-2-now-shipping/

- Core i5 4300U instead of 4200U - very slight clock increase, but in some cases won’t affect things much

- Cellular version coming in Q1(SOON)

- Goodbytes makes some solid arguments for why to get it - digitizer, form factor, battery life (8 hrs note-taking), x86 compatible, lightweight, build quality.

- Still more interested in gen 3 or 4...

Tegra K1

- 192 Kepler GPU cores with 4+1 Cortex A15 now, and 2x “Project Denver” CPU cores later

- Feature-equivalent to XBone and PS4, Perf. equivalent to XB360 & PS3

- Running Unreal Engine 4

- Running Faceworks demo

- Was running in a Tegra Note form factor tablet - suggests not many changes were made and Sheild 2 & Note 2 will be coming pretty soon.

G-SYNC at CES

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/98488-gsync-coming-to-a-27-1440p-near-you-in-q2/

- ROG Swift Pg 278Q will be the only 2560 option at launch

- 120hz+ whatever that means.  The one in the suite ran at 144

-TN vs IPS discussion: super lcd3 is TN and I love it

- pricing discussion $799

Look at those 27” 1080p monitors… Ew

Monitor manufacturers who will release G-Sync integrated products in Q2 2014 include Acer, AOC, ASUS, BEnQ, Philps and ViewSonic.

Mantle at CES

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/98505-mantle-45-better-performance/

oxide games demo - directX was under 10, mantle was over 30

people will be able to test the oxide demo at some point on their own

this 45% number will be interesting to investigate once we have the opportunity to try more system configs

FreeSync at CES

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/98712-amd-freesync-amds-free-g-sync-alternative/

- vBlank spec exists already

- only really implemented on notebooks

- AMD no go-to-market strategy at this time.

- NVIDIA is licensing the technology, but they also just flat-out built hardware to do it. Whatever ends up happening in the future, gotta give credit to NV for pushing forward. Just like Apple with resolution.

- Even if you never buy a G-SYNC monitor, you’ll have NV to thank for better scaler technology that support vblank.

Edison @ CES

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/98859-intel-announces-edison-a-computer-the-size-of-an-sd-card/

- Uses Quark cores - super small, super low power - 1/5 size & 1/10 power of Atom core.

bluetooth(LE) and wifi on board

x86

connect to it through SSH, runs linux(plug it into an SD card slot)

NOT designed as a replacement for cubieboard, raspberry pi, arduino, or the like… it is its own beast

400Mhz, dual core

“middle of 2014”

ASUS 4K 28” Monitor for $799

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/98718-asus-pb287q-a-28-4k-panel-for-799/

- $799

- TN panel and no information about refresh rate (proably 60) or viewing angle

- Linus saw Dell’s 28” 4K ($699) and it actually looked not bad. Not as good as the

Nintendo builds new headquarters

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/98779-nintendo-builds-a-new-headquarters/

Bringing together the mobile and console teams

seems like a great idea, one of the biggest complaints i hear is that the mobile platforms for nintendo don’t integrate with their console platforms…

1,500 person capacity

16.5 billion yen, which is about $204 million USD

Pebble steel

http://getpebble.com - pebble steel

Good move, smart watches need to look more classy

I like that it comes with metal and leather straps

All current pebble apps will work just fine

swappable watch faces

Battery life of the pebble doesnt bother me at all! 5-7*quoted* days is great… phone battery life is the real annoying thing, with this taking an extra 5-10% every day of the already HORRIBLE amount of running time for phones it adds to the annoyance of phone charging

Blackberry files lawsuit against typo keyboard

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/97301-blackberry-files-patent-lawsuit-against-typo-keyboard/

I wonder if they are happy this happened? Potentially more money…

"This is a blatant infringement against BlackBerry's iconic keyboard, and we will vigorously protect our intellectual property against any company that attempts to copy our unique design," BlackBerry chief legal officer Steve Zipperstein said in a release. "We are flattered by the desire to graft our keyboard onto other smartphones, but we will not tolerate such activity without fair compensation for using our intellectual property and our technological innovations."

“community-submitted, updated materials, we make no visual or verbal reference to Kanye West but to a half-man-half-fish hybrid who is wearing sunglasses, again, totally separate from any resemblance to your client.”

Mozilla warns users to read their code

http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2014/01/mozilla/

http://thehackernews.com/2014/01/Firefox-open-source-browser-nsa-surveillance.html

Essentially Mozilla is telling people to watch their open source code… they “haven’t been asked” yet to implement backdoors but they are saying if they were it would likely be with a gag order, so if the public looks through their source code then the public wll know right away, unlike other browsers

Cant wait to watch the WAN show!

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only a GTX 1080, just a single 1080, where my glorious PC once stood....

For that is all I need, For the Emperor of Man, Jen-Hsun Huang, protects. We march for Nvidia, and we shall know no fear!

There is a similar data mining app that sparks tons of controversies in Hong Kong back in August-September 2013. A company created an app called "Do No Evil", which allow users to search through public records. Hong Kong's Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) called this as a "serious invasion of privacy" despite the data source is publicly-available, and you can access them by paid a small fee.
