Getting stutter in games

SSJGodemis

Hello my fellow PC Master race,

Lately, I have been getting pretty unbearable stutter in games. I hate any stutter and it ruins my experience. I have a 4k G-Sync monitor that has a range of 30-60hz. My GPU is an RTX 2080 Ti. I have been using the blur busters method of capping FPS to 57 with RTSS and turning V-Sync on. My GPU will stay at 58-59fps but then have drops to 54 which causes the stutter.  When I turn off V-Sync and RTSS and use Fast Sync I am getting easily over 60fps. Its like because I am capping the the FPS, my GPU and CPU stop trying allowing for the FPS to drop.

Anyone have any tips for this? I have cleaned all my drivers already. I am thinking of maybe a fresh windows install.

When did the stutter start ? Also you say it does it in every game yes ?  Is it a frame rate dropage or literally a stutter.  Like mouse gets stuck and what not.  You have a good rig man, we will fix you up, just bare with us.

Why would you cap your FPS with a card like that?

Keep Vsync OFF do not use it... also using any GSYNC etc adds input lag which imo makes games feel horrible...  If your FPS is higher than your monitor refresh rate which i'm assuming is 60hz you shouldnt experience any stuttering or tearing.

So, the mouse does not get stuck. Its just an FPS drop but it feels like a stutter. I guess its not every game. In Resident Evil 2 I had no issue at all. It ran like a dream. I have been replaying Metro 2033 redux and Metro Last Light Redux.

When I turn V-Sync and RTSS off, my FPS soars to around 80-100fps. Only when I try to keep it in the G-Sync range is when I get this fps drops that feel like stutter. Maybe I should just through fast sync on and leave V-Sync and RTSS off?

I have a 4k G-Sync monitor and the G-Sync range is 30-60hz. Blur Busters had done some research and found the best combo was to limit FPS to 3fps lower than the top out which is 60.  Then you add V-Sync through the Nvidia control panel to prevent tearing.

I didn't know there are g-sync monitors that are 60hz ?  What is the point ?  There is no reason your framerate should drop into double digits with your card.  You should be getting 140fps avg with all nv panel settings set to On, and everything set to max high quality AA methods and in game everything ultra @ 1440p you should never see double digits in frames.  I don't know why you drop to 57fps or 54fps.  That just does not sound right with your video card.  You should be AAAing triple digits.  Since your monitor is 60hz I recommend turning vsync off or use the Fast option.  WIth the Fast option you wont get high fps but vsync OFF will yield all the fps the card can deliver.

I am not gaming at 1440p.  It is a 4k monitor which is demanding. That is why it has G-Sync in case hitting 60fps is hard.

Your playing at 4k no wonder.  You can do 60fps with slight drops.  Try the FAST option and that 60fps will be 120fps @1440p not sure about 4k.  It will be smooth like vsync alto it drops frames.  Then if you can turn vsync off and see what your experience is as far as tearing and what not.  With your video card it is a cardinal sin to lock it at 60fps ,, when it can deliver 180fps lol,  Might as well gotten a 2060 RTX ya know.  You must forget bout this 60hz 60fps BS.  For the hell of it run it with vsync OFF and see if you get does drops to 54fps and slight stutter.

I am confused by your statement. A 4k getting 120fps is not going to happen which is why 60fps 4k is the goal.  I dont have a 1440p monitor or 1080p, For me getting 120-144fps is not needed. I perfer higher graphical fidelity and resolution at 60fps.  Even an RTX 2080 Ti will struggle at times in 4k. My goal was to try to keep the FPS in my G-Sync range for a smooth experience. However, for whatever reason, I have fps drops that feel like stutter.

Yes my friend I said 1440p for 120fps,, Sorry for confusion.  WIth vsync OFF make it 200+ .  Also enable all options in nv panel and max it out and max out your game.  You should get 60fps without drops honestly with the card you have.  If there are drops then that game is not a well made engine.

If some games run better and don't dip below 60fps then I think there is nothing we can do.  But if your really not busy and have free time to kill, then go into safe mode and run DDU "Display Driver uninstaller" then reboot into normal mode and install latest nVidia WHQL that just came out.

I am thinking that might be the case. In Resident Evil 2 remake I was getting over 70fps if I left the frame unlocked. That was at max 4k. Metro 2033 and Last Light are much older games and when I leave the frame rate uncapped it was getting 80-100. I think in that case it probably is the RTSS frame limiter causing my CPU and GPU to not work as hard and then experience random fps drops.

I mean your frame rate is correct for 4k gaming.  You should get 60fps with occasional drops to 50's which don't affect performance that much.

Let do a test SSJGodemis.  Put your in game resolution to 1440p , turn vsync off and tell us what fps you gettings.  Your FPS should not drop below 100fps even in the most complex battles.

I think your soilution is to turn everything On in nvpanel like AA methods and all that jazz ,,,everything to max and in game settings to max.  Now play the game or games that were dropping to 54fps with vsync OFF and let us know your results so we can rule out a ton of stuff.

Hi

That is about right. A RTX 2080 ti will stutter or get rough at around 54fps at 4k. It will also stutter and screen tear without vsync at 4k.

My GTX 1080 ti behaved better with no stutter at 4k and on most games I could let run free. Hopefully as drivers mature the 2080 ti will be the same.

What I do to keep my 2080 ti out of trouble is overclock it. I only apply the overclock on games that need it. I never had to overclock the 1080ti because it could stay smooth into the high 30.

Good luck.
