Radeon VII, can it do 10bit output?

MandicReally

I was posting in the videography forum about 10bit graphics output and the point was raised that the VII seems to just be a repurposed (&7nm) workstation card. So the question is, can the Radeon VII output a 4k 10bit video signal?

****NOTE:  I mean IN Windows OS, NOT in a game. Namely for a content creator who wants a true 10bit output for color work in video and photo work. Previously only the AMD Firepro cards and Nvidia Quadro have been capable of this. If the VII can do it, it would be a powerful option.

Ryzen 7 2700X , Asus Prime X570-Pro, Bykski CPU Block, AMD Vega 56, Barrow GPU block, g.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB PC2800, Dual EKWB SE360 Radiators, Corsair RM750x PSU. All in a Lian-Li PC011 Dynamic XL case.

The best info I can find is maybe. The Vega Frontier Edition card could, so Vega definitely can. It's just a question of if it's enabled for the Radeon VII.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess I need to find a reviewer who can test this.

How would you test it? Do you need a 4K 10 bit panel?

With cards unable to output 10-bit you won't have the option. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightlest if the VII can (and many GeForce cards) but it's a software prevented or not enabled.

I only see the option for 8bpc, no 6 or 10. IDK if there's a pro driver option for the RVII like there was for the Vega FE, but I don't think there is.

I could get a Decklink card to output 10 bit with a consumer level gpu but I could stand to upgrade my GTX980 anyway so if I can get a GPU that does 10bit itself, no need for another ugly card. That's what this boils down to.

I don't see a reason why not.

THough my Screens don't allow it so I can't test it.

Depending on the Output, you definately have the Option to choose the bit depth of the Screen.

I have 10 bit enabled on my liquid Vega 64 in Radeon settings using a 4k screen. It think it even says 12 bit like @Stefan Payne shows above.

Does that mean it's really 10 bit? I haven't looked into too much.. Does it effect performance?

I

I just noted in an article discussing drivers that will be enabling more Pro features on the VII that 10-Bit is already enabled. The drivers address a bug in the 10Bit display. So sounds like the VII may be for me.

I am also a Radeon VII owner who has the menu dropdown in Radeon Settings which shows 10 bit as an option. However, I remember seeing this option on my R9 290 so I don't think it really means much unless that card actually supported it, which I doubt. So if it really matters to you then you should ask AMD, just because it's in the menu doesn't guarantee it's actually working.

I will check for certain before purchasing, solid call.

That said the drivers issues list that they are aware of multiple issues with 10-Bit and are addressing it. Which is a good sign for me. Or they could pull some silly thing and remove it entirely.
