Wierd problem with 2080 ti rtx

Psycrovv

Hi

I got a wierd problem with my we hardware.

Details:

I have this monitor PG27UQ: https://www.asus.com/dk/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG27UQ/

and this card 2080 ti rtx: https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N208TAORUS-X-11GC#kf

In windows i have set my screen options to the following details:

3840 x 2160 - 32 bit - 10 bpc - RBG - Full dynamic area for output.

Since i know 1.4 dp cant give me 120-144 hz with 10 bit RGB unless i get 4.4.4 or 4.2.2. So that is why im using these options for best output.

Problem:

When i play ect Warframe in fullscreen with all gfx on high and best settings. using 98 hz 4 k res. in game display option.

Then at random times when i quit the game or if i press alt + tab then i see in nvidia screen options, that thx hz and pbc suddenly dropped to 82 hz - 8 pbc and sometimes 4.2.2

and i cant choose anything higher than 82 hz being the limit. When i reboot then i can set the custom option back to what im use to have, and i can change all the hz up to 120 -144 hz again.

This happens randomly.  Some days nothing happens and other days it might do it 2-3 times.

See screenshots https://www.dropbox.com/s/07ikyfzl6ts8zee/fail 1.png?dl=0

This is what the settings was reduced to after i quit warframe or use alt +tab

Here Warframe started to lag very hard and become unplayable until i had this wierd outcome

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2347g4ygvftkrve/Fail 2.png?dl=0

But this only happend once.

Then i tryed to fix it with old and new drivers, but then something went very wrong and this was the outcome.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/p1a6muqu3riffte/Fail 3.png?dl=0

The BPC options was gone..until i made a reboot and fresh driver install.

Then i found another problem related to this issue. My screen has a setting in the menu where i can choose to OC my monitor to 144 hz

or else i can disable it and the screen can only go to 120 hz being the limit. So when i try to disable and enable this option a few times, then the screen goes black for few seconds

due to the updated options, but sometimes it messes up the hz rate and when the OC is ebaled then i should be able to choose 144 hz but it goes to 82 hz. This also happend at random times.

If i disable and enable the OC few times, then maybe 2 times out of 5 or so then the hz wont go higher than 82 hz even if it should be able to choose 120 or 144 hz.

I dont know what to do here since i dont know if that is a screen or gfx card or software error.

but its wierd and annyoing.

Today there was no problems even with oc enabled.

Can it be related to the ingame V sync or G sync since that locks the hz.

Because now i disabled the v sync in warframe and set hz to no limit alltho the current hz is set to 98 in game and in windows.

Also setting the powermanagement for the Nvidia 3D settings to max power seems to help a bit with the stability of the HZ

I dont use HDR due to the variable backlight and halo light.

can anyone please help me out in here ?

Should i RMA the card ?

Does the frame rate you are getting match up with the refresh rate of your monitor? If so it might be something to do with G-sync, I have an ASUS MG28UQ so I don’t have G-sync but I have heard that it slows down your refresh rate to match it with the FPS of the game.

Oh is that how it works.  That sorta good or is that bad ?  I mean we are paying 300 dollars more for this darn g-sync.  Why not just use freesync ?

You mean i should have 98 fps using 98 hz ingame ?

This was in path of exile with v sync enabled. Then it was 98 but ramped up and down like you see from 49 ish to 98 ish

See fps 1 pic

With out V sync it was mostly on 82 hz

See Fps 2 pic

Vsync enabled

Fps.1.png

V sync disabled

Fps2.png

Warframe v sync on set hz 98 ( i guess it match )

Waframe on.png

Warframe V sync off. No limit

Warframe off.png

Hmm Warframe does use the players connection. So when i play missions with ect 4 players then one player becomes the host sort of.

If that host has a poor connection, can it then have impact on my hz resfresh rate and ultimate make my game crash incl the Nvidia driver settings ?

Is that possible ?

Turn HDR on in windows, you'll probably have to turn the brightness down in nvda control panel (i went from 50->30), make sure to use nvidia settings instead of application controlled settings, this will force hdr on all applications, the 4k/144hz monitors do not handle SDR well (which is whats causing the switch to 82hz)

Play on fullscreen windowed,

Turn HDR OFF in games with HDR in-game

If it starts stuttering or flickering, disable gsync and enable it again.

If it changes from 144hz 422 or 98 444/full to 82hz, thats a gpu driver/bandwidth issue that requires you to restart and do the monitor settings over again (4k/98/422 or 4k/144/444), 4k/82hz is the limit for hdmi 1.2 iirc, if gpu driver resets it can default to 82hz. 82hz is most often accidently enable when going from fullscreen back to windows back to fullscreen again, so don't play on fullscreen, use 4k borderless windowed.

Disable Vsync for everything and rely on windowed gsync.

The PG27UQ or the X27 isn't true 144hz and you may see some ghosting on 4k/144 if you focus enough, it's a known issue.

I uninstalled poe the other day til the new season so couldn't cap the settings there, but it's 4k/144/422, borderless windowed, vsync off.

I tryed to enable HDR and lowered the light to 30 % also, but im realy not happy for this variable backlight.

Because it gives me this halo effect that is mentioned alot for this monitor. Even with the lights turned down.

Also i see you set ur scale to 150 %

But im using 200 % since i find 150 % very small and it nags my eyes, like putting stress on my eyes.

Text becomes like ants..and i dont have bad eyes or use glasses. Even my head hurts at 150 % scale

Or how do you deal with that ?

But i will try play in full window mode and disable v sync

Like you suggest. ( i see you also play warframe :D)

So you dont think my gfx card is broken or defective. ? The store offered me to swap the card to another, but i dont want to embarrest my self if it not the card that is broken.

When i disable the OC boost and use the 120 hz settings, then this wierd hz changing problem dosent realy trigger.

It has something to do with the OC 144 hz option on the screen.

Btw i see HDR enabled makes the default settings use 10 bpc.

Is there a way to make nvidia use 98 hz full RGB 10 bpc 4k res for a standart profile ?

Today when i powered my pc on then i could see these settings was set in nvidia drivers.

And i had to reboot to fix it back. Why would my pc even use these low settings on a fresh bootup

while i can't say for sure whether your card is defective or not, i've experienced all of the problems you mentioned, The problem likely has to do with gpu drivers, and not the gpu itself, the best way to fix the problem is to just restart gsync (other than the 82hz issue, it requires a restart.

You can set the brightness and scaling however you want, as long as you are comfortable, 50% brightness with hdr1000 is too bright for me, the haloing is something i'm willing to deal with. I wish there was a way to make a standard profile, but not that i know of.

imho, the difference between 98 and 120 is not worth the hassle, and i'm willing to deal with a bit of ghosting to get 144, but it's up to you. I mostly play on 98hz unless it's path of exile or warframe.

Allright so you also tryed to set ur gfx settings to a given option and then it changed automatic to 82 hz somehow when you played fullscreen game ?

What card do you have ?

I also quit Poe due to that league, but i havent uninstalled it yet.i might do

Btw how about borderless fullscreen ?

the 82hz problem happens very rarely when i quit a full screen game back to windows, it's like the drivers can't detect the correct refresh rate and requires a restart.

Yes its a rare thing exactly..but it does happens. Will you try and test with me..if you disable the 144 oc and set nvidia to 98 hz full RGB 10 bpc costom profile

Then this rare hz change dosent happens at all..also you can try disable the HDR and then try and enable/disable the 144 oC few times while you have nvidia controle panel open so you see the hz changes..then this oc swicthing can also trigger the 82 hz problem..it does for me.

Im speaking with Nvdia support atm and they made me use moninfo app to save the screen info mam file and they told me this.

"The edid information that you sent looks a little od that it doesn't mention any support for 120 or 144 hz.
The first thing I would try is to get a new DP cable."

"Also, the edid you sent doesn't look like it lists any of the refresh rates that are available in your control panel.. are you using any kind of video adapter or switch in addition to the cable from asus?"

I dont use anything else beside this screen.

Btw i i tryed to enable and disable the OC option few times on the screen when the game had set my screen to 82 hz and that also fixed it, so i dident need to reboot.

Hope this info helps. That is why i want to point at the OC again
