Torn between two monitors - advice?

ben127127

I'm torn between these two monitors at the moment and I wanted people's input. Both are 27", 1440p, 144Hz, and 1ms response time. However, one is IPS and $450, and one is TN and $400. The IPS one has gotten slightly worse reviews for response time and ghosting, which is why the TN is still in the running. I also love the look of the Dell. What sort of difference will I see?

TN Monitor: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/MXQG3C/dell-s2719dgf-270-2560x1440-155-hz-monitor-s2719dgf

Is the IPS worth it? What do people think I should go for? Thanks!

It would be used primarily for gaming.

Personally speaking I'd get the IPS one and not look back.

The image improvements with a good IPS Matte screen are noticeable, I remember up to this day when I finally switched from the last TN panel I had a LCD 1680x1050p monitor to a LG 29UM68-P which was an IPS Matte 2560x1080p screen, the colours... wow...

I still like comparing the huge difference in fidelity and over all quality comparing my laptops TN to my current IPS X34.

144hz already is all the hz you need and 50 bucks for that feeling? totally worth it.

AMD - Sapphire Pulse Vega 56. Both monitors support FreeSync.

The IPS monitor only hits 1ms response time with something called "VRB"..? Not sure if you guys know anything about this, but if you do, is it reliable? All good if you're not sure how it works!

i don't know but it's irrelevant...i'm using a monitor that has the same panel has the IPS one you're looking at and it's STUPID fast...no input lag or ghosting what so ever...those screens are really fast...gray to gray ms is a marketing gimmick don't worry about it..the IPS is better in every way.

Got it, I'll go for the IPS one. My only concern is that it doesn't have a USB port. Will I have to stretch my mouse wire all the way to my case?

Unless you get a wireless mouse, a USB hub, or have a second monitor or something else on the desk that can connect back to your PC....then yes lol

That's probably not "response time" but GTG which as stated is irrelevant.

I recently swapped my 1080 TN 144hz out with a 1440p IPS and its been the best thing I have ever done. Let me start by saying here, I am no expert! But the resposnse time listed on products are often useless. Most TN will claim 1 ms when for gaming and 4 ms when ISP But what they talk about is Grey to Grey and not response time and not all colours.

Guess Cadence has abit more expertice on this than me.

Some people have suggesting using displaylag.com to check up, but personally I would just look at the reviews of the minitors, I can't see a difference from my old 1 ms gamer tn panel and my new 1 ms ISP panel.. Infact my ISP panel blows me away colour wise compared. I have played all genres of games, including fast paced FPS and I have actually become better with my old bones on the 1440p ISP than my old 1080 TN.

If you do light gaming or don't play competitive FPS (and I mean competitive as in the sense that you earn cash) then I would suggest the ISP if it has good reviews. I am pretty picky myself with stuff and was abit worried about how a ISP would hold up and if I would see a difference, but I really do not. I am one of those people that can't play on 60 hz monitors (They litterly hurt my eyes) and I can see a difference from 60/100/144/165 hz. That depends on person to person, the fun part about 60 hz hurting actually has to do with old TV's hz and that they were different in the EU and US.. you see here in Europe we had 50 hz TV's and in the US 60 hz, I guess I had gotten so used to the 50 hz that 60 hz would have a impact some how.. That is another debate for another time I guess.

Sorry for the wall of text and going abit off topic. To conclude. Read reviews, if ISP reviews are good go ISP rather than TN. unless you are a pro FPS gamer.

Will a Sapphire Vega 56 even be strong enough to run a 144Hz 1440p monitor, now that I think about it? That's my GPU.

Depends the graphical settings you're comfortable playing at... 1440p is a good deal harder to run than 1080p but watch the following video and take your own conclusions:
