  1. I just got an email from GOG talking about a recent update to their site. Video: GOG is now selling movies, and they're starting with documentaries. A part of this is that you can get 2 movies for free in order to see what it's like. In addition, there are now local currencies added: EUR, GBP, AUD and RUB. (Euro, Great British Pound, Australian Dollar and Russian Ruble.) Along with that, if there is a price markup within your region, GOG will give you the difference back in store credit. The standard price is based off of US pricing. I think this is all pretty cool, but I don't understand why GOG gives you in store credit, rather than just not charging you the extra amount. I'm sure someone can tell me why there's a probably rather stupid system in place that causes this.
  2. Post at /. Source for image. Great. Hmm, I wonder if there will be a browser coming out in the near future (or may be already out) that won't have this implemented in some shape or form, but also works with most websites. We'll see. I personally don't like it. We just keep going over it, but DRM is a losing proposition for both parties. How many times are they gonna try crap like this? It doesn't stop pirates. It never really does. It only makes their process of getting content slightly more annoying. I think this is a sign of things to come: Open Source Browsers. Are there any? I mean, I know some are technically that way with extensions, but still. ... I already have a name for it: Google Ultron Interesting comments on Slashdot: What do you guys think of this idea of DRM in the webspace?
  3. So I found this link from a "xbox engineer" who was trying to explane the Xbox One's DRM. http://www.neowin.net/news/anonymous-xbox-engineer-explains-drm-and-microsofts-xbox-one-intentions Does this change your view of the Xbox One? Do PC gamers like the idea of a platform similar to Steam being on consoles. TL;DR: What it is essentially saying is that the Xbox One is trying to be more like steam. It appears that as long as your Xbox One checks in every 24 hours any your games were not resold or loaned to a friend you can play without a disk. Edit: I'm also a PC gamer and have about 600gb of games installed.
  4. An interesting article from Giant Bomb in which they state that Microsoft is rethinking there policy's when it comes to DRM and used games etc. Microsoft is currently having a lot of negative PR with the Xbox One because of its DRM policy and used game policy. Sony has stated that they will not restrict the user when it comes to being always online and trading games with friends etc. What does this means, quoted from Giant Bomb: No more always online requirement The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360 An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs Region locks have been dropped If this is true it is a giant turnaround of Microsoft. Still this will for me not make the One an interesting console, the price is too damn high. To be honest I think this is great and I am not really surprised, Microsoft needed to do something to make there console interesting. This is still a rumor so take it with a piece of salt, but Giant Bomb is a good and accurate site when it comes to gaming news. Source: http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/microsoft-to-pull-complete-reversal-on-xbox-one-dr/1100-4673/ UPDATE: The Microsoft site has been updated, I will provide a link when I get One. UPDATE: http://t.co/E3yBuCB9P2 Officially confirmed by Microsoft.
  5. I can say with confidence that pretty much everybody is happy that Microsoft has updated their DRM policy (http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update), but most people haven't realized that some of the good features of the Xbox One are being abandoned. One of the things abandoned was the "Shared Games Library". This article is partially incorrect, though, because it states that the only way to play a game was if you have a disc. In the news article linked above, Microsoft stated: However, the meaning of the article is still there, even though some of the information is incorrect. Because of this change to the DRM policy, some of the features are going away. What do you think about this? Do you wish the DRM policy stayed the same so you could have these features, or do you think it is good they changed it? Source: http://gamerant.com/xbox-one-game-sharing-plans-microsoft/comment-page-2/#comment-119515
  6. It looks like drm gets cracked very easy. Why would companies waste thousands of dollars or millions on drm if it does. It work? It makes the experience less enjoyable in my opinion. So should game companies stop making drm protection software?
  7. Google's web browser Chrome, its next version 57, will have the Widevine DRM permanently enable and there is no way to disable it. The whole DRM began with EME (Encrypted Media Extension) The advantages of that, was users who wants to play protected content, won't need to run additional plugins such as Adobe flash or Microsoft Silverlight, that's used by Netflix. Since Silverlight was a dying pluging and Adobe flash has its own set of security issue, Netflix had to write their entire site for HTML, where they decided to just create a dedicated program instead of running through a browser. The problem with EME was it did not get rid of the plugin such as Silverlight or Flash it had promised, and now it requires another DRM plugin for which ever browser you're using, such as if a user is running on Chrome, to play protect content, they will need both the EME and Widevine DRM plugins. The DRM itself also possess a security risk of their own as, Other problem are One other plug in that cannot be disable in Chrome 57 is its native PDF viewer. When opening up PDF files, it won't allow user to open the pdf file with the program of their choice. DRM protects the artist's work, as they work hard for it. But to some what break the consumers' PC is, something they need to find a better solution, where both sides can agree on. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/chrome-57-permanently-enabled-drm,33527.html
  8. SOURCE: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2018/06/google-play-security-metadata-and.html?m=1 Google just announced that they'd start to ad a special string of metadata to all apps on the Play store. This is not all bad news, Google is reportedly doing this so make offline peer-to-peer distribution safer as as APK's not containing this DRM will not run. This could potentially also make pirating APK's safer as you wouldn't be able to install potential viruses. Although there's nothing saying that Google can't turn around and abuse this on a later date. EDIT: This is what Google themselves say about why they're adding this: "One of the reasons we're doing this is to help developers reach a wider audience, particularly in countries where peer-to-peer app sharing is common because of costly data plans and limited connectivity."
  9. Hey guys just wanna know what you think about DRMs. PC game piracy has always been a problem and anti tamper DRMs like DENUVO are doing a great job but hackers eventually crack the DRM and pirates enjoy the full game with a simple click.whereas a legitimate purchaser has to verify the legitimacy of his copy via internet connection... This happened to me yesterday I wanted to play just cause 3 and couldn't cause my internet connection was down (server maintenance) So I couldn't play the game that I legit purchased ? I know piracy hurts the developer but it has never been proven that putting a anti-tamper DRM like DENUVO boosts the game sales either... Look at CD Projekt Red they make great games and don't need any DRM to break sales records !!! And at any point I'd like to buy games from digital distributer like GOG cause DRM free means I actually own that copy of the game. whereas DRM means I pay for license to play that game and not the actual game... What do you guys think ?
  10. Just had to post this even though it may be a rumor, but it appears that Denuvo Software Solutions may be using an unlicensed version of VMProtect Software as a part of it's anti-piracy software... From the article at TechSpot: http://www.techspot.com/news/69572-denuvo-allegedly-protected-own-anti-piracy-software-pirated.html As the article states, the sources are a little bit sketchy, however, if there is some truth behind this, it seems kind of funny... If anything, it may be a lesson to Denuvo to ensure their own licensing is in order. UPDATE: VMProtect Software has issued a formal statement clarifying that there are no open issues between VMProtect and Denuvo although it does not really provide any details... http://vmpsoft.com/20170606/vmprotect-and-denuvo-gmbh/ Whether there really was anything that happened in the background still isn't clear, however it would appear that Denuvo and VMProtect are currently in each others good graces.
  11. Apparently, one particular kind of DRM protection persists in giving more and more headaches to game crackers. If you wonder why there's still no working pirated release of Just Cause 3, look no further: Source: https://torrentfreak.com/no-more-pirate-games-in-two-years-group-warns-160106/
  12. I can't run this game without framerate dips and it's awful. (I mean i could lower the graphics but hell no).
  13. Hey, i got apple music and i got a big playlist allready, but i can' t import those songs to my ipod nano. So i wonderd if there was a way to remove the drm and import those songs to my ipod.
  14. Insert puking emoticon here: Because being able to freely use your computer is soooo 2000s.
  15. Hello, new member here. I've been trying to figure this out for the best part of a weekend now to no success. I'm moving soon and my only computer will be an Acer S3-391 ultrabook that I had lying around. Problem is, it had a 500GB HDD full of bloatware and the drive was pretty slow to start with. So I swapped that out for an old yet reliable Intel 520 120GB ssd. Luckily I already had Windows installed so I could re-install within Windows once it was on my new laptop but here's the problem. If I want to reinstall using USB it won't work. Apparently OEMs now stick their Windows activation key in the BIOS and Windows will always check that rather than letting you enter your own. I've tried editing the PID.txt and EI.txt files in my USB installer to no success. Is there any way you lot know of to bypass the BIOS activation so I can activate using my legit product key?
  16. Do you think this is rumors? And do you hope it is. (Video from ReviewTechUSA)
  17. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=576869 Usually I wouldn't make a rumor thread about something but considering that 90% of the Xbox One rumors were proven to be true, I can't rule this out. So a user on NeoGAF who is apparently close to people working at microsoft came out and said that microsoft has to downclock the GPU on the Xbox One due to issues concerning the eSRAM on the chip. Considering that a lot of users on GAF trust the user who leaked the news as credible, this rumor may have some truth to it. But hey, if proven wrong, this thread could have some comedic value to it.
  18. First, let me "apologize" for posting about something that Logan from TekSyndicate posted. However, the message he is getting across is completely true. He's basically saying that Microsoft doesn't care about their customers at all. The only reason they changed the DRM policy is because with what they were using, sales would have been non-existent. Basically, Microsoft is trying to shape their own future, not the future that their customers want, and they will only change if something horrible happens, such as the DRM policy and the negative reaction to that. Also, there's a pretty funny meme posted at the top of the page: Source: https://teksyndicate.com/users/logan/blog/2013/06/19/microsoft-drops-drm-im-still-not-happy EDIT: YES! I KNOW! Businesses are trying to make money. The point trying to be made here is that businesses like Valve are so successful because they deliver what the customers what. If you think about it, Steam's DRM is very restrictive, but people use it because of things like the summer sales. Businesses can be successful by shoving things down the customers' throats or by providing what customers want to buy, and the best businesses are ones that provide what customers want.
  19. Before you leave some snarky comment and leave this page, hear me out for a bit. I usually never condone piracy (if you've ever heard me before, you'd know that, let alone take part in it, but I felt it was my civic duty to in the case of Watch Dogs. It's the second time I have pirated something in the last year (last time it was mafia 2 so I could mod it, due to the legit game taking away this functionality). Pirating watch dogs (and Mafia 2) was quite easy. I used the Skidrow site, and a few clicks later, it was downloading, whether through my browser or bit-torrent. 12hrs later, it was sitting there ready to be unzipped and played. Once downloaded I didn't have to once: - Log in to anything - Download a lengthy patch for a DRM site - Connect ingame to the internet - Hassle around with some sort of launcher - Wait for a server to respond - Have an internet connection at all After I had extracted it, it was ready. I could place the folder anywhere on my machine, and it would simply run with the executable. I distinctly remember having this same experience, yet supporting the developer. Where? GOG. That's where. I bought S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Sky. Same thing applied, except I didn't feel guilty. Not only that, but the game worked great. Clear Sky is known not to be a good port but I got 60FPS+ 150% of the time. So why would I pay money for something that gives less of an experience. Something that doesn't work. Something I have to tackle to the ground, grab by its throat and shove it in line, just to play. Then have it attack me repeatedly as I try to play. I would happily buy Watch Dogs off GOG because I'm guaranteed it will: - Be paying the same amount as everyone else - Have a world wide version of the game, not region locked - Work - Work well - Be a good port - Have great customer support if something does go wrong So what is the point of this??? Well, I think GabeN and GOG actually have the right idea. If you offer a service that is guaranteed to work, equal, cheap, DRM free and easily accessible with a small amount of quality control, you will sell more copies, have less pirates and have a bigger fanbase. Unfortunately GabeN's store doesn't offer all this. Then Ubisoft is wondering why people are pirating there games, and then bring out this shit??? Your game is going to get cracked one way or another, simple as that. So why have 10 layers of DRM to prevent the inevitable??? WHY??? Game devs constantly ridicule DRM free service, but it would actually, I think, reduce the amount of pirates and provide a GAIN in sales, rather than a drop. If I can get a game that is just as easily accessibly as a pirated copy, 100% will work no coin miners attached, morally right, I think 90% of people will choose said option. Anyway, enough of my thoughts, does anyone else think this would actually work, or am I slowly going insane and they should actually just layer up the DRM?
  20. Hi, I'm a little peeved that Apple will not let me play content I have purchased outside of their proprietary player. I have a Macbook, but my desktop is Windows. Does anyone know how to convert Apple's protected .m4v files into something that can play on VLC or a similar video player? Cheers
  21. This meme has been circulating the forums and games media for quite a while now, but i've not actually seen anyone back this up. Right now the controversy seems to revolve around Assassin's Creed Origins, where it's now claimed by every games outlet that without a doubt the DRM is to blame for. Their proof is a user named "voksi", who provides proof of the game code repeatedly calling for VMprotect whenever the character moves. Now i'm not claiming to be an expert on gamecode, but I'm not as easily impressed like the people over at Kotaku or kitguru either. To me, this doesn't prove it takes up many CPU cycles. All this does is prove it calls to vmp0, nothing more. https://www.kitguru.net/channel/generaltech/matthew-wilson/updated-dual-drm-might-be-causing-high-cpu-usage-on-assassins-creed-origins/ https://www.reddit.com/r/CrackWatch/comments/79pd62/update_on_ubisofts_anticonsumerism/ https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/79n1sr/denuvo_causes_3040_additional_cpu_usage_in/ The supposed proof: https://image.prntscr.com/image/_6qmeqq0RBCMIAtGK8VnRw.png The same claims were made with Denuvo, and if there was clear signs of Denuvo causing excessive overhead by taking up many CPU cycles, we'd have seen it by now? I did a google search (removing the last few days from the results because it was literally pages of Asscreed only), and can't find any substantial evidence of comparissons between cracked titles, running side-by-side showing a significant uptick in CPU load. To be honest, looking at the game when navigating the City, there seems to be a lot going on. And my guess is the next-gen consoles also have their CPU's pegged to handle all those drawcalls. Exactly how do people expect such drawcall heavy games to translate to the PC, running a much higher overhead API like DX11 at twice the framerate, on CPU's with fewer threads (or at all)? If the same was true today, as people have been claiming with Denuvo all this time, companies would have long dropped the services. As optimizing the game to get it running across multiple platforms costs a lot of time and money. And yet they continued to use it, meaning it can't be that significant. They're only dropping it now because the service since it no doubt adds fee's, and the games get cracked in hours anyway. So...anyone got a unbiased, conclusive test for me that without question proves this claim? Which is also corroberated by other outlets? To be honest, the only thing Ubisoft really did wrong is not explicitly mention the recommended specs are required for 30fps, and mention the game is not intended to run higher so use at own discredtion.
  22. So, Recently I upgraded my pc (processor) Replaced my humble and loyal Fx8320 with Ryzen 1700x So far I have had a great experience with my new processor. Games like GTA 5 and Witcher 3 use 45% to 55% Cpu horsepower at peak respectively. Average Cpu usage stays at 37% - 45% even for the most Cpu intensive games. Until I bought assassin's creed Origins, I experienced some shuttering and occasional frame drops from say 50fps to 25fps which caused huge lag. Thought it was a GPU issue and hence I updated my drivers yet the end results were kind of the same... Then some game news outlet posted about AC origins maxing CPU usage to 100%. This sparked my curiosity, there was no way this game could max my CPU I thought. And I was right but surprised at the same time. My CPU was at 85% usage with average usage at around 70%. Well, unless I messed something up in the bios there is no way this game should Utilize more than 60% of CPU. Ubisoft as always has dismissed the claim that Anti Tamper DRM has anything to do with this abnormal CPU usage. They went one step ahead by adding VMprotect atop Denuvo Anti-tamper. it's ironic that an Anti-piracy software needs protection for itself. Anyways I do believe that developers who made the game deserve to get paid every penny they ask for. Piracy is not only unethical but also a crime. Thing is, we the legitimate consumers have to experience this inconvenience. Once the game is unlocked (hacked) pirates will play the game without any restrictions whereas, we have to verify our purchase with an internet connection on top have to deal with these anti-tamper softwares constantly stressing our hardware... Why don't publishers get it that pirates will never buy the games to begin with. And it's been proven that piracy doesn't affect the overall game's sales figure. Let the quality of your games speak for itself. Great games don't need these anti-piracy softwares to get decent sales figures, we have seen CD Projekt do it and many others too. Idk why I am writing this... I am just frustrated Below is an image posted on Reddit showing proof of the Anti-tamper software Maxing the CPU usage...
  23. Me and my family are on vacation and we are trying to use Vudu to watch a movie on the big TV in the hotel room with an HDMI cable from my laptop. However, when we try to play it, we get an error saying that it cannot play because of copyright issues, because the TV is not HDCP compliant. It seems like we are probably just screwed, but is there any way to get around this?

  25. Source: EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) (Archive in case it goes down) Restoring old games is hacking, and all hacking is piracy, and all hacking is illegal!.... Right? (WRONG) You smell that? Yeah, it... smells like bull. No, it's not April 1st, I've almost got no words for this. This has to be the worst thing I've heard this year, at least so far. This is no different than the patent trolling that goes on in the industry, people like this keep relating things to piracy to stigmatise and scaremonger. Regardless of whether they're right or wrong in saying that hacking old games is piracy or not (which they are completely incorrect in saying) it doesn't matter, the general public will believe them and the consumers will not get any support. It's almost as if they care for nothing aside from money and business, it's like they become enraged when they see people doing things for free. I'm done, here's the quotes from the article. "The Entertainment Software Association doesn't want anyone to restore the functionality of older videogames that are no longer supported by their publisher, because, says ESA, this is "hacking," and all hacking is "associated with piracy." "Behind this hyperbole, ESA (along with MPAA and RIAA) seem to be opposing anyone who bypasses game DRM for any reason, no matter how limited or important.
