At the end, Linus recommended rescuing an older phone off of ebay. I don't know if I agree, since odds are those old phones are no longer receiving software/security updates. I wish Linus brought up that caveat.

I don't think Linus's target audience was people who are willing to install custom roms when he recommended getting an old phone off of ebay.

MrZoraman reacted to RONOTHAN## in How are mini-itx motherboards so SMOL?
It helps a lot. The other thing very common with ITX boards are that they have a ridiculous amount of PCB layers, that way they can squeeze a lot more of the circuitry into the same 2D area. Capacitors and other SMD components still require vias to be wired up, but that's a bit easier to do. For instance, the Z790I Edge WiFi is an ITX board that's decently well featured, in order to get everything wired up it's a 12 layer board. By contrast, the ATX Z790 Edge is a 6 layer board.

Look at all that empty space even on a mATX board. Once you start chopping off components, that means less traces to run. They can also in theory can increase PCB layers and will be able to route same amout of traces in different layers.

MrZoraman reacted to VioDuskar in A USB drive I'm looking at comes in both Type A and Type C variants. Which one should I choose?
Go USB C. A isn't going out of style anytime soon, but C allows you to plug it into smaller and smaller form factor devices like phones, or thin books with only a USB C port.

Plus, you can always get an A-C adapter if you can live with some speed loss.

These would be even more practical if everyone had one in their emergency supplies kit. Now your network is already pre-deployed.

We thought about it, but they definitely won't be overclocking. The XT CPUs do not come with coolers, so they will need to buy an aftermarket cooler. Thus I wouldn't consider XT processors at the same price point.

MrZoraman got a reaction from verisimilar in I have an EVGA W1 PSU, which is in the D tier. Why is it potentially dangerous?
That was the most obnoxious review I've ever read. It looks like it should be fine though, the reviewer generally liked it.

I have it plugged into an old i5 2400 system. I don't think there's even a graphics card on the system so it's not consuming much power.

MrZoraman got a reaction from Ben17 in If I build a gaming pc that I under utilize, will it produce less heat?
Here's my problem: I have an i7 6700k and a vega 56 as my current build. It more or less satisfies my needs. The problem: I live in a tiny apartment and my computer really heats up my apartment. Playing tf2 does a better job of heating my apartment up than my two heaters do, to the point that whenever I'm cold I just play tf2.

This makes summers a bit miserable though, to the point that I dread using my pc because of the amount of heat it will produce. I've even underclock my i7 6700k in the summer at times!

I just had an idea: if I build a really powerful pc and then don't use it to it's fullest potential, maybe it won't heat up my apartment to the surface of the sun! A beefy cpu and gpu should chomp on tf2 without breaking a sweat, which means hopefully I won't break a sweat while playing too.

Note I'm not worried about my actual hardware temperatures. My cooling system is more than adequate. The heat is being drawn away from the CPU, unfortunately enough for me. Though, the alternative is worse. If I could just keep all that heat inside my PC and not in my environment, I don't think my computer would last very long!

I assume the TDP mentioned on cpus/gpus is only the max TDP. But maybe I'm wrong. I'm no physicist so I'm not going to use the proper terminology here (I guess a "unit of heat" would be a joule? I don't want to get too adventurous, I never was that good at physics!). My assumption is that a processing unit at 0% load produces n units of heat per second, and that same processing unit at 100% load produces m units of heat per second, where n < m. If this assumption is true, how different is n compared to m? Is it different enough for me to notice? Is it different enough to potentially alleviate my heating woes?
