foxhound590 reacted to LAwLz in GOG.com is the only legitimate source of our games (The Witcher 3)
People please, check your reading comprehension.
That is GOG saying that the only legitimate place to get GOG edition games (their installer, their compatibility patches and DRM-free) is from GOG.com. They did not say "GOG is the only store which sells The Witcher 3 legitimately".
If you see a "Zeus Master of Olympus GOG edition" game on some site that isn't GOG, then it's a scam. That's all they are saying.

foxhound590 reacted to looney in How To: Format Usb Flash Drive Not Showing Up On Computer
How to: format USB flash drive not showing up on computer
A member had a problem with one of his USB flash drives.
Something went wrong when he formatted it with a format program to turn the flash drive into a linux live drive.
As a result of this his USB flash drive no longer showed up in the "computer" folder. The USB flash drive did show up on the windows 7 Disk Management but it was grayed out and he could not format it via the Disk Management.
This tutorial will fix the problem by formatting it using diskpart.
WARNING: You will lose all data on the USB flash drive!
Step 1:
type "diskpart" in the windows search bar and open the program, preferably by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator".
Step 2:
Once you opened diskpart you will need to type in the following command: "list disk"
This will list all the Hard drives and USB flash drives connected to the computer.
Step 3:
Locate you USB flash drive by looking at the size of the drive in the list, make sure you remember the Disk number. In my case it's a 32GB flash drive, so mine is the 29GB drive listed as "Disk 8"
WARNING: Don't continue to step 4 unless you are 100% sure that you have the right drive or you will clean the wrong drive!
Step 4:
Select the troubled USB flash drive by typing the command: "select disk (insert the drive number here without brackets)"
In my example it is Disk 8.
Step 5:
Now you must clean the drive by giving the "clean" command.
Step 6:
Next thing you need to do is create a partition with the command "create partition primary"
Step 7:
Now you need to select the partition you just created by giving the following command: "select partition 1"
Step 8:
Last step, you need to format the flash drive with the following command: "format fs=ntfs label=USB quick"
Victory:
You can close diskpart.
The drive will now show up on your computer listed as USB formatted with the NTFS file system.

foxhound590 reacted to Syntaxvgm in Should I be worried about obsolescence so soon after building my PC?
a 4790k will do you fine for a long time unless you must be on the bleeding edge.
I'm using a sandy bridge i7 with a 970 myself, and I'm not feeling any rush to upgrade my CPU. (not at least until we see 16GB non-ECC sticks on ddr4, I hope. I have an itx build so this would be nice)
You'll always have GPU envy before CPU envy

foxhound590 reacted to beebskadoo in Apple sues Samsung over S6 and S6 edge!
Well Samsung and Apple are at it again, this latest fiasco is over the newly released Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Apple is stating that 3 of its patents have been violated and it is looking to stop the future sale of Samsung’s newest phones in the North American market. The first violation has to do with the antenna band placement location on the phones, Apple made the patent claim when they released the iPhone 4s, which the new Galaxy phones share the glass back design with. Also Apple is claiming that Samsung purposely copied their design language with the new phones, stating that the button layout and design look was stolen from the iPhone 6.
This isn't the first time Samsung has been in legal troubles with Apple, though this is the most aggressive patent lawsuit Samsung has faced by Apple. Apple won the last series of suits against Samsung, this time it looks like that will happen again as Samsung honestly doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.
Around this time last year Apple filed suit against Razer for the design language of their Blade 2014 laptop, the case was settled outside of court and details of the final settlement are fuzzy. Apple has been known to be very aggressive in its legal action towards smaller companies. We shall wait and see what the outcome is.

This is why everyone should use an antivirus and malwarebytes
Even if you are careful on the internet there can be viruses and malware in stuff you would never expect, like a program update
The "use common sense" is not an alternative to active protection

foxhound590 reacted to Captain_WD in WD Question Thread - Hard Drives, Dual Drive Setups, Storage Setup Optimization
@
A drive is a mechanical unit which life depends on many factors such as type of usage, environment, etc. Western Digital puts warranties on drives in order to guarantee their life for that period. A drive can last 10 years as well as it can fail in a matter of months - it is a mechanical unit after all and failures do happen due to different factors.
In terms if warranty, WD Black, WD Black2 and WD Red Pro have the longer warranty of 5-years (as well as WD Xe, WD Re and WD Se from the Datacenter class).
I would simply look around in the communities for general feedback on which drives tend to last longer than others. The more opinions you get - the more accurate your info would be.

Do WD have any plans to extend the Blue series beyond 1TB to more directly compete with the 2/3 TB barracudas?

foxhound590 reacted to 45Drives in 10gb internet
Hi, Allison here from 45 Drives. Everyone who's chimed in already is right - you would need a NIC in your computer if you want 10Gbit speeds. We use Intel X540-T2 here, but any 10G card will do.
We've done a lot of testing in our own lab for 10Gbit, and we’ve found CAT6 or CAT6A cables worked just fine. CAT6A would be the ideal choice because it can reach up to 100m (whereas CAT6 is only 56m). No need to upgrade to CAT7 cables - only difference from CAT6A is reduced interference from other CAT cables, so that's up to you.
Switches have come way down in price in the last little while –we’ve used the Netgear Prosafe 8-port switch in our own lab and it’s been serving us great so far (and it's the cheapest available right now).
Thanks for checking out the Storinator - let me know if you've got any other questions, or feel free to email info@45drives.com.

Correct, the Netgear switch is the XS708E, we use one in the lab and it’s great. And yes, Cat7 has been standardized (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_7_cable) You're right - it's essentially fancy Cat6a cable. It's rated up 600MHz while Cat6a is only 500MHz, otherwise they are essentially the same. -
foxhound590 reacted to 45Drives in 10gb internet
We've noticed no issues with performance, and have successfully saturated our 10G network. Of course, there are always "nicer" switches but for ~100/port, our R&D team thinks it offers wonderful performance. -
