welp, i'm both happy and irritated at the moment.
turns out my 13" MacBook Pro does not have a dead memory slot after all. it was the ram itself that was faulty. i've owned that ram for years, i never even considered that it could be faulty until i tried it in another computer and it just did not boot. so i put different ram in my Mac and it's totally happy now.
so i need to buy a 16gb kit for it now, but hey that's better than having a faulty machine.
see, completely fine with both slots, booted first try:

BUY AN ELITEBOOK THEY SAID! IT WOULD BE REPAIRABLE THEY SAID!!!!
basically i broke my 9470m yesterday, i tried to open up the fan as it had been making a weird noise for months. now, i'm used to working on Mac's which are nutoriously anti-repair. but, on a macbook if you want to open up a fan to clean the dust out or whatever it's just 2 or 3 plastic clips usually and it opens right up.
NOW, HP decided that it would be a good idea to have a clip on one side and use molten plastic on the other side to hold it (which i didn't see at first), so i opened up the clip and tried to lift it and it just cracked and now the fan is broken.
.....
WHY HAVE A CLIP IF YOU'RE GONNA MAKE IT NOT USER-REPAIRABLE!!!!!
fuck hp, i'm never buying from them again.

me and my dad gave my macbook pro some maintenance yesterday, we tore off the remaining 3 feet that hadn't dropped off yet because they were barely hanging on and used some epoxy to glue them back on to the machine so it now has all 4 feet securely attached, and we took apart the cooling system and removed all the dust. it runs a lot cooler now and it doesn't slide around on a table

what if Apple made a MacBook Pro SE?
like imagine a 2012 15" Unibody MacBook Pro chassis, with modern components like a quadcore i5 or 6-core i7, but the same features. like the optical drive, ports, upgradable ram and storage... maybe a nice screen (like the optional at the time 1680x1050 display, my 15" MacBook has that display and it's beautiful)
if they sold that for like $600 i'd buy it in a heartbeat.

i have found a new use for my old iPhone 6s. it's gonna be used as an 'ipod'.. if i can just dedicate it's 64gb of storage for offline music downloads on spotify, it would save basically all my music... also it has a headphone jack which is still kinda useful as i have some old earbuds and i lost my dongle for my SE...
