  1. lap[tops are designed so that the keys won't scratch the display... this shouldn't be neccesary unless the laptop was poorly designed.
  2. just use Windows 10 without the Windows 7 dualboot?
  3. it does still get support for hardware around the 8.1 Era, i'm pretty sure you can get GeForce 600 and 700 drivers for it for example... but yes modern stuff hell no.
  4. Quallcomm SQ2, used in the 2020 Surface Pro X. it still lags behind the M1 in lots of ways.
  5. not much worse than an entry level chromebook to be honest. i've used a few and often they have ARM chips that you see in budget smartphones being used to run a desktop web browser. like it's horribly slow, even compared to my 2012 MacBook Pro which is available on the used market for half the price of an entry level chromebook. there is more to a device than just the power it has. if you buy a Mac you're paying for the OS, first party software, build quality, like, you can't just compare a $400 chromebook with a TN screen that was considered horrible 10 years ago to a MacBook with a Retina display... exactly. like i said above my 9 year old 2012 macbook pro still handily outperforms even most midrange chromebooks and is available on the used market for much less than those devices cost. my 15" Late 2011 would run rings around even high end chromebooks, like hell it has a quadcore i7 in it. but those 15" Unibody's aren't always the most reliable and also cost more than 13" models so that's why i didn't use it as an example before.
  6. welp, i'm both happy and irritated at the moment.

turns out my 13" MacBook Pro does not have a dead memory slot after all. it was the ram itself that was faulty. i've owned that ram for years, i never even considered that it could be faulty until i tried it in another computer and it just did not boot. so i put different ram in my Mac and it's totally happy now.

so i need to buy a 16gb kit for it now, but hey that's better than having a faulty machine.

see, completely fine with both slots, booted first try:

  7. i wonder how many of those chrome users are personal users though... my guess is that all those chromebooks are in schools or workplaces and people are forced to use them. i can't see any other scenario where someone would pick a chromebook over a Windows device or a MacBook.
  8. so it's not "just an arm chip" it's clearly superior to the competition...
  9. why then is it like 3 to 4 times faster than Microsoft's Surface with ARM?
  10. BUY AN ELITEBOOK THEY SAID! IT WOULD BE REPAIRABLE THEY SAID!!!!

basically i broke my 9470m yesterday, i tried to open up the fan as it had been making a weird noise for months. now, i'm used to working on Mac's which are nutoriously anti-repair. but, on a macbook if you want to open up a fan to clean the dust out or whatever it's just 2 or 3 plastic clips usually and it opens right up.

NOW, HP decided that it would be a good idea to have a clip on one side and use molten plastic on the other side to hold it (which i didn't see at first), so i opened up the clip and tried to lift it and it just cracked and now the fan is broken.

    .....

WHY HAVE A CLIP IF YOU'RE GONNA MAKE IT NOT USER-REPAIRABLE!!!!!

fuck hp, i'm never buying from them again.

well the windows laptop manufacturers wanted to be as good or even better than apple 😉

  11. don't use windows, problem solved. jk, try a virus scan and if that comes up empty contact Microsoft about it as this is a pretty serious problem...
  12. but it's lightyears ahead of competing ARM designs...
  13. the process is quite involved, but you can disable swap if you want. https://windsketch.cc/macbook-disable-swap/
  14. idk why but running windows stuff on macOS always trips me up...

  15. me and my dad gave my macbook pro some maintenance yesterday, we tore off the remaining 3 feet that hadn't dropped off yet because they were barely hanging on and used some epoxy to glue them back on to the machine so it now has all 4 feet securely attached, and we took apart the cooling system and removed all the dust. it runs a lot cooler now and it doesn't slide around on a table 🙂

  16. what if Apple made a MacBook Pro SE?

like imagine a 2012 15" Unibody MacBook Pro chassis, with modern components like a quadcore i5 or 6-core i7, but the same features. like the optical drive, ports, upgradable ram and storage... maybe a nice screen (like the optional at the time 1680x1050 display, my 15" MacBook has that display and it's beautiful)

if they sold that for like $600 i'd buy it in a heartbeat.

While definately an ideal macbook, probably would never happen.

However, i'd also buy one in a second

Basically just buy a refurbished 2015 MBP

  17. you sign an agreement. it's as easy as that. i'd much rather have apple's controlled ecosystem than the malware filled wreck that is android's ecosystem
  18. probably because through a VM a user could use any payment platform on any service theyw anted through the app. also apple's content guidelines can't apply, so users could view content that is not allowed by the app store, etc etc etc. this is common sense...
  19. i have found a new use for my old iPhone 6s. it's gonna be used as an 'ipod'.. if i can just dedicate it's 64gb of storage for offline music downloads on spotify, it would save basically all my music... also it has a headphone jack which is still kinda useful as i have some old earbuds and i lost my dongle for my SE...

I used to use a pre paid android phone for this purpose

    2. sub68

      sub68

I keep a flash drive with all of my music

  20. eeeeeh, stock Ubuntu uses gnome which is a stretch on 4gb of ram. something lighter weight would be better, like Xubuntu.
  21. this is why i don't recommend lenovo usually, they cheap out on the wrong things. piece of junk touchpads for example. anyways, i found a guide but it is very involved... https://itectec.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-ideapad-5-15are05-elan-touchpad-not-working-on-20-04-nor-on-18-04/ it might be easier to just get one of those small wireless mice...
  22. probably something like debian, and just start with a commandline and install only what you need. it's not ubuntu based, it's actually what Ubuntu is based on lmao. if you want something light that has an Ubuntu base use Ubuntu server. you start with a commandline, and you can install only the things you need.
