nekogod reacted to minibois in Robin Hood investing app forgets to check for leap year
You would need to add two more check to that, since leap years isn't just "is the year divisible by 4?".
If a year is divisible by 100, it is NOT a leap year (like the years 1800, 1900, etc.). Unless then again a year is divisible by 400, then it is a leap year (like 1600, 2000, etc.).

So the check needs to look a little like this:
if(((year % 4 == 0) && (year % 100 != 0)) || (year % 400 == 0)) { YearIsLeapYear = true; } Not keeping in mind those two extra rules would only result in an error in the year 2100, which may seem far away.. But so was the year 2000, when programs were still working with two number year formats.
But that still does not account for leapseconds, different timezones (like half hour or quarter of an hour timezones), etc.

In these sorts of circumstances it's probably best to just use a library which includes all this stuff and rigorously check (unit test) it for your purposes.

nekogod got a reaction from TechyBen in Is Scan.co.uk a safe shopping website?
Yeah perfectly legit site, they even have a physical shop you can go to if you want.

Not the cheapest, and I've not bought any of their prebuilts, but their scansure insurance is pretty good (insures against damage caused when installing new components) and they offer interest free credit for a decent 10 months.

Yes, however I believe you need at least 10 bit (40bit) colour for true HDR

I did find this reddit thread which has some information about this

Personally I'd be inclined to spend the extra £10-30 or so for the 6gb version of the 1060 or the RX580 8gb, but the rest looks decent.

I'd upgrade the GPU in the desktop and keep everything else the same. I had a 4770k and a 780 and upgraded to a 1080 and I'm still flying along. Still don't think it's worth upgrading CPU.

Oil companies in the US have been hindering renewable power for decades. The US could have been running on pure solar/wind or even nuclear(not renewable but much much cleaner than coal or oil or gas) now for easily 20 years but has barely scratched the surface because of big oil companies.

nekogod got a reaction from Hybris5112 in What does "Future Proof" mean to you?
It's something I would have said didn't exist for most of the 90s and 00s the tech was moving so damn fast.

Now that moores law seems to be slowing down and quantum tunneling is now an issue as it's an imedence to die shrinks beyond about 5-6nm new hardware is going to be a lot more incremental rather than major jumps.

Which means that a decent amount of future proofing is now possible. I'd say anything that remains at least 75% as good as top tier stuff for 3-5 years could be considered future proof. I think this sweetspot actually hit for CPUs around 3-4 years ago, I've a 4790k (bought in 2014) that I still don't see a need to upgrade from. With GPUs I think we're hitting that now, the 10 series and new AMD cards were a significant jump in performance over the previous gen and I reckon that we'll see mostly incremental upgrades for a few years before the next decent boost in power.

Interesting that you would put the AMD card with Intel CPU and the nvidia card with the AMD cpu, but yeah Intel CPU will do you a better turn.

What he's asking is if it POSTs. If it POSTs but doesn't enter Windows, it's probably the OS- but if it doesn't POST, it's probably the hardware.

You didn't say what power supply you used.
It kind of sounds like a power supply that can't properly power the PC.

What kind of power supply are you using?
(Not just how many watts, the model and name please. Lots of PSU's claim they are 700 watts but can only deliver 200)

So the new board arrived, I swapped it over, plugged everything in and boom same issue.

I finally figured out what this was, £135 later

I recently got new monitors and I switched from HDMI to DP and it didn't dawn on me that the issue started around the same time.

Ended up swapping the DP cable for £3 and poof problem gone.

Unfortunately there is a good chance I bricked the previous board whilst removing it so stuck with my new one, it seems pretty good, weaker amp so sound not as loud, but arguably cleaner and still loud enough.

That'll learn me I suppose, CHECK ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING before spending loads of money!

I've got a NZXT block and rad on the CPU so I think that should be ok, will give overclocking it a try.

I think I will indeed get faster RAM

I've been looking at the 980s, they aint cheap, but I suppose I can get the money for 1 by selling my 780s I've got a corsair AX1200 so it should be able to provide the needed power
