I've been thinking lately of getting myself a new setup. My current build out is great but I know there are always new things out there and after a very small bit of research I started putting together what I would want in a new setup. My main concept around upgrading is consolidating my computers and upgrading my power. Instead of having a desktop and a laptop, only have one main computer. To achieve this I've been looking a laptops accompanied by a external GPU enclosures. This seems like a really cool setup and solution to what I am looking for but sometimes I have my reservations about it. Specifically I have been looking at Razer Core V2 along side a 14" Inch Razer Blade. These are obviosuly premium but I gravitate towards products like that. I know a handful of other companies make solutions like this but without the ability to try them I don't know how good they are and if they work the way I would like them to.

College Student, Gaming, Photo/Video Editing, AutoCAD and Revvit. That basically is my main workflow and use of my computers. I am always gaming when I get free time and pretty much play anything and everything so I want the ability to play anything at near max settings. My current laptop is sometimes used more than my desktop because I am at school a lot. I definitely like the idea of a laptop and GPU dock because I can take it to school then come and be able to crush anything i need to. My Mac is great and it kills pretty much anything that I throw at it except gaming obviously. My desktop is what I consider the heavy lifter. I run most heavy stuff through my desktop and it handles it well but as time has gone its definitely started to get slower.

Currently as I type this, this is what I am running:

My Desktop: | CPU Intel i7-4770K | Motherboard Asus Maximus VI Hero | RAM G.Skill TridentX 2400Mhz 32GB | GPU MSI 780 Lightning | Case Fractal Design Define R4 | Storage 1 X Samsung 850 Evo 1TB | PSU Corsair RM1000 | Display(s)2 X Asus MX259H | Cooling Corsair H100i | Keyboard Corsair K70 RGB | Mouse Corsair M65 RGB | Operating System  Windows 10 |

My Laptop: | Spec'd out Late 2015 MacBook Pro | i7, 16Gb Ram, 1TB SSD |

I've been rockin' this stuff for a while. Nothing is wrong with either of them. The laptop runs really well and it's super great for everything that I use it for. The desktop is fine, some parts are starting to show a bit of age and slowing just a bit.

So, what are your opinions on setups like this? What do you all think of having a laptop with a external GPU enclosure? I think it's cool but I want to know what people who use them or have used them think.

Let me know so I don't buy something that I am going to regret.

Thanks

P.S. I super tired typing this. Sorry if it's not well laid out.

if you find that slow you're probably stuck with desktops. you'll struggle a lot to find a laptop that will match the performance of a 4770k for a reasonable price

I'd upgrade the GPU in the desktop and keep everything else the same. I had a 4770k and a 780 and upgraded to a 1080 and I'm still flying along. Still don't think it's worth upgrading CPU.

Yeah I'm on the same page with you both. That was my only real reservation with a laptop rig is the CPU. Thanks for the info y'all.
