A single more powerful card is always a better option than 2 less powerful ones. Get the 1080 Ti.

If you're intending to overclock, go for the 8600K. If not, go with the 8400 and take advantage of the faster memory that Z-chipsets make available.

And yes, it's more than good enough.

an 8400 will be plenty however, a 6 core Ryzen would be a bit better in this application with its hyper threading and higher OC.

Gaming is my last priority for this monitor. I already have a 1440p that I use for gaming, this one is going to be used as a secondary monitor and for content creation tasks.

For gaming that 980 would struggle hard on a 4k monitor, might be fine for editing purposes. However with the ultrawide I think that will be a better investment in terms of real estate for working on projects, and you will still be able to get decent FPS.

I'm looking for the best monitor to use with my EVGA 1060 SSC 6GB graphics card.

I would like to get back into PC gaming, probably with games like CS:GO, Rocket League , Far Cry, Resident Evil, Dark Souls, Shooter games, probably some sports games.  I will also use it for web browsing, remoteing into servers and networks for work from time to time. I may do occasional video streaming from Plex, Netflix, Hulu.

I'm assuming with that card it would best to stay at 1080p and go for 144hz with gsync or should I worry about gsync?

I've been looking at the following monitors:

    Benq XL2430
    Asus PG248Q
    AOC G2460PG
    Acer XB241H
    MSI G24C
    Viewsonic XG2401
    Samsung C24FG70
    Asus MG248QR

Then I was looking at the Dell S2417DG for a 1440p monitor.

The rest of the specs for my PC are:

    Gigabyte X299 Gaming 3 Motherboard
    Intel i7-7800x
    16GB DDR4 2400 Ram

    Thanks for your help!

ignorance is truly a choice in this day and age

all the evidence you posted goes against your claims yet you still want to make outlandish claims so you turn to looking at a factory overclocked card with a power target of 216w(200w +8%) which is well over the 140w( 120w +16%) the factory card is rated for, it has a 1800mhz boost clock and with gpu boost 3.0 its able to get 1950mhz(im looking at that specific cards firmware settings right now so please tell me more as to how im wrong), just setting my card back to stock speeds i can confirm i only get about 1800-1850mhz boost clock on gpu boost 3.0 and without my 190mhz core OC i wont hit anywhere near 1900mhz like you are claiming(i actually get 2100mhz solid with that OC)

you are literally pulling sh** out of your a** and claiming it as fact, there is no arguing with people like you, i might as well talk to a wall considering i at least know the wall wont be listening to me, you keep believing the 980ti is 100% better than the 1060, all the evidence points to a 33% increase at most when comparing to the lowest end 1060 but hey you do you right, its your right to choose to ignore evidence you cited as fact and make up numbers when someone points out the evidence you posted goes against what you are claiming and its your right to plug your ears and say lalalala when someone tries to tell you the truth

but whats the pricing on the new chips? that hasnt been released yet and there are no independent benchmarks yet so we dont know performance and we dont know how much everything will cost

im not saying anything bad against intel, im a firm believer in buying what you can afford now and getting the best you can right now and i dont see the logic in waiting to buy the next gen just cause its gonna be better, if you are gonna wait for coffee lake you might as well wait for zen2 which is gonna be faster than zen is right now and it might be better than coffee lake or priced better but then intel will release its 9th gen processors so just wait to get that, ect. ect. ect.

i think if OP wants a R3 1200 right now op should get one and not think about the next gen cause the next gen will always be better, plus AM4 gives OP upgrade paths so if zen2 comes out and OP wants to upgrade to that then OP can upgrade to that without buying a new motherboard(unlike intel with coffee lake but i digress)

I dont like the waiting logic because it encourages people to wait and not build a PC to game on when they can just build one now with the best parts they can afford and start gaming, again about the 980ti and r3 1200, sure the cpu will probably bottleneck the graphics card but imo its cheaper to but a cheap cpu with an overkill gpu right now(considering OP said they are getting a good deal on a 980ti right now) then upgrade the cpu down the ling as opposed to buying the cheap cpu and gpu and having to upgrade both of them down the line

Here is a legitmate source you cannot argue with.
    https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GTX_1060_Mini_3_GB/32.html

The 1060 mini is truly in the range of entry level 1060 3gb as evidenced by its single fan cooler. You cannot deny that.

Ad we can tell when OCed we see about a 15% performance jump.

Also if you'll note, I AM NOT pulling these numbers from my ass, thank you very much. Please read this
That IS a 1900 MHz boost, not that 1700 you were claiming earlier.

Also I'm really not sure where you're pulling those power limit numbers from. Looking at the power consumption results we're coming nowhere near the supposed power limit you're referring to, which indicates either the power limit is much lower OR the 1060 can't use up that much power anyways making the power limit that high essentially useless for higher clock speed boosting.

The "lowest end 1060," the mini, sees the 980 ti beating it by 33%, both at stock. We see it can OC about 15% in actual real world tests, and also find that  the 980 ti can oc about 20-25% and aftermarket ones can go 5-10% beyond that. Do the math and that makes it definitely above 50% faster, no doubt.

Same here, for the most part.  I've run into a handful of games that won't play well in 10, but most work just fine.  Of course, I also install all my games to another drive, which eliminates the permissions issues when installing under the Program Files directory.

Have you considered disabling the Automatic Updates service?  Alternatively, set the 'Active Hours' to overnight, and have it prompt you during the day to install and reboot (if you're at the computer, you can tell it to wait before rebooting).  Also, if you have Pro/Ent/Edu, you can use GPEdit to change the updates method and disable automatic installs (and even disable automatic downloads).  You can even disable automatic restarts via GPEdit.

The 980ti is at times stronger than a 1070 so it's on another league if you can afford that, just beware of cards that might not be in the best of conditions. Failing that I'd try for a 1060 3gb the VRAM is not ideal but it shouldn't be a problem for a while most games at 1080p are still not maxing 1080p and in case they do you can always just adjust your settings.

just stick a normal, mid range board in there, it'll cost you probably 100 - 150 bucks and you're back on the road. realistically you're almost definitely not using all the 'features' of your luxury board and as the board has no affect on performance just replace it with the cheapest (*Decent) one you can find.

But what you aren't realize is that you aren't getting 1700 MHz out of the card stock. What you're actually getting is 1900-2000 MHz because of gpu boost.

Just look here, the MSI gaming x 1060 3gb boosts to 1950 MHz stock

hammer3339 reacted to luigi90210 in Good GPU on a Budget?
if you overclock the 1060 you make up the performance difference, 1700mhz to 2100mhz is a big jump in clock speeds, about the same as what you can get with a good overclock on a 980ti so again i ask, how do you get 50% when the base difference is 33% and you can overclock both of them by about the same 20% margin?

you seem to be focused on overclocking the 980ti will blow the 1060 out of the water but it just doesnt cause the 1060 can also overclock and its just as good at overclocking as the 980ti if not better since it run cooler, its not like the 1060 is locked from the factory and cant be overclocked and the 980ti is unlocked

because the current gen do.... the new i3 is a quad core so it's a current gen i5 and the new i5 is a hex core. both with significantly higher ipc than ryzen capable of (over) clocking significantly higher so, it is safe to assume that they will be a minimum of 20-30%better in all similarly threaded tasks, especially gaming.

buying basically a haswell i5 now as a place holder and then wasting more money buying a larger chip in the same gen isn't a wise use of your hard earned, just spend the difference you'll save getting a single new cpu or a better gpu if possible.
