astranger200 got a reaction from EthanTheFrogMan in Opperation: Folding@Home. Budget: $15
So I had this crazy idea... a folding@home rig/home server, on a budget of next to nothing.
here are the parts and prices:
c2d 6400: free
msi platnum something 775: free
4gb ddr2 533 or so: free
some antec crappo 500w basic psu: free
antec 300: $10
some thermaltake 6 heat pipe cpu cooler: $2
a fan (120mm): $3
200gb wd caviar: free
hd 7870 saphire oc eddition (unstable): free
some other random fans: free
dvd drive: free
crappo wifi addapter: free
Explanation:
A family friend of our's (who owns a business) said he had a server die. I asked if I could have it and he said sure. I had no idea what to expect. when I got it, it had the c2d, 2gb ram, a gt 6200, a dvd drive, the crappo psu, a awful case and a BALLER mobo (supports crossfire, has 7 sata ports, ect); so that explains all those parts.
The other ddr2 I got from our school IT.
The other fans came from school IT/dumster diving.
I found the hdd dumster diving and wiped it.
I got the crappo wifi add adapter from a friend who got a new one.
The 7870: I was at a lan party talking to a guy who had a gpu just laying next to his pc. he said it artifacted and that I could have it. I gratefully took it and whacked it in my gaming pc. After a bit if testing I found that if I dropped the factory oc and ran it as a standard ghz edition with the power limit at 150% it is completely stable in folding@home. Its thermals are relatively good (it runs about 63c with a room temp of 25c and the fans at 100% {I prefer cool not quiet}).
The Build:
Mobo, cpu, ram and cpu cooler are in
psu is in (I'm not even going to try and cable manage those mess of molex cables...)
Finished build with gpu in.
Results:
It makes about 80k PPD for just $15 aud. If you ask me, that is fantastic!
I am also useing it as a server to store a backup of the family photos
