I wouldn't go with older/used parts. They are not as efficient or powerful as new, modern hardware.

Parents: gmaesplayer, come over here! Dad's laptop stopped working!
Me: Ok, can I see it?
Parents: Sure, just fix it.
Me: *Turns on computer to see something that said "RAM DISK FAILURE"*
Me: *Takes out RAM and puts it back in*
Laptop: *Works*
Parents: *Hands me $50* Wow, that was crazy? How did you know to do that?
Me: *Facepalm*

Excuse me sir, I think you have some CPU on your thermal paste.
I would bet that it could be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and still work. Assuming that owner didn't do stupid shit with it. (Which he probably did, worth a shot though)
