Jeremytroid reacted to Nineshadow in Samsung develops 60GHz Wi-Fi 802.11ad technology with five times data transmission speed
Samsung Electronics announced the development of its 60GHz Wi-Fi technology, a five-fold increase from 866Mbps, or 108MB per second, the maximum speed possible with existing consumer electronics devices.

    Samsung Electronics’ 60GHz Wi-Fi Technology

Accelerates Data Transmission by Five Times

    Commercially viable 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology

to benefit wide variety of connected devices

Samsung Electronics announced the development of its 60GHz Wi-Fi technology that enables data transmission speeds of up to 4.6Gbps, or 575MB per second, a five-fold increase from 866Mbps, or 108MB per second, the maximum speed possible with existing consumer electronics devices. As a result, a 1GB movie will take less than three seconds to transfer between devices, while uncompressed high-definition videos can easily be streamed from mobile devices to TVs in real-time without any delay.

“Samsung has successfully overcome the barriers to the commercialization of 60GHz millimeter-wave band Wi-Fi technology, and looks forward to commercializing this breakthrough technology,” said Kim Chang Yong, Head of DMC R&D Center of Samsung Electronics. “New and innovative changes await Samsung’s next-generation devices, while new possibilities have been opened up for the future development of Wi-Fi technology.”

Unlike the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi technologies, Samsung’s 802.11ad standard 60GHz Wi-Fi technology maintains maximum speed by eliminating co-channel interference, regardless of the number of devices using the same network. By doing so, Samsung’s new technology removes the gap between theoretical and actual speeds, and exhibits actual speed that is more than 10 times faster than that of 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi technologies.

Until now, there have been significant challenges in commercially adopting 60GHz Wi-Fi technology , as millimeter waves that travel by line-of-sight has weak penetration properties and is susceptible to path loss, resulting in poor signal and data performance. By leveraging millimeter-wave circuit design and high performance modem technologies and by developing wide-coverage beam-forming antenna, Samsung was able to successfully achieve the highest quality, commercially viable 60GHz Wi-Fi technology.

In addition, Samsung also enhanced the overall signal quality by developing the world’s first micro beam-forming control technology that optimizes the communications module in less than 1/3,000 seconds, in case of any changes in the communications environment. The company also developed the world’s first method that allows multiple devices to connect simultaneously to a network.

As is the case with the 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum, the 60GHz is an unlicensed band spectrum across the world, and commercialization is expected as early as next year. Samsung plans to apply this new technology to a wide range of products, including audio visual and medical devices, as well as telecommunications equipment. The technology will also be integral to developments relevant to the Samsung Smart Home and other initiatives related to the Internet of Things.

I've had this build done for many months, but I'm finally making a thread. It's going to be upgraded with an R9 285 4GB whenever those become available. (I'm sorry if this is a super poopy build log, I've never done one before >.>)

The case, an NZXT H230, was very minimal and instantly caught my eye as fitting the Mirror's Edge aesthetic. Inside, I wanted the coloring to represent more of her "heart", so I went with reds and blacks. No modding was done, but if it wasn't evident, I'm on a SUPER tight budget haha

    NZXT H230
    Seagate Barracuda 500GB
    LG MODISC Combo Drive

I'm very happy with how things turned out and it wasn't a super expensive rig either. I did decide to go with the A88X platform since this seems more viable in the future and where AMD is focused. My close friend got my old FX 6300 based rig sans the 7790, which was objectively better but I was tired of looking at it and it was kinda of ugly. I'm a shallow person... Which is also why I ended up ditching the watercooler. The cramped tubing really did not look great and it's not like this processor needs WC.

So it will be a while before Guinness sorts through our footage to validate the world world for themselves, but it was definitely the highest altitude LAN party (okay... someone on a plane could have gamed higher up, but we're talking while still on land here) EVER!

This project was a blast and wouldn't have been possible without help from a LOT of people including the Tek Syndicate team, Austin Evans, the NeweggTV guys, and OF COURSE our sponsors.

Huge thanks first to ASUS for providing us with the router we used at the top, the funding we needed to get our teams out there, and of course a dozen of their latest RoG gaming notebook the G550JK, which you can check out in this video here:

Oh... and did I mention in the above video I've got details for how you can WIN the very notebook that I gamed on at the top of the mountain? Did I also mention that it's signed by me, Logan, Paul, Kyle, Luke, and Qain????

But don't worry if you don't win one. Newegg's got a deal going right now where you get an exclusive bundle if you buy one at this link. Check it out!

    http://bit.ly/g550jk

Our next big thank you goes out to Intel. They partnered with us to help pay many of the people involved including members of our teams. Oh and I guess they also made the efficient quad core Core i7 processors that went inside the G550JK notebooks we carried up the mountain. If they consumed more power and output more heat, then those would have been pretty difficult to lug up there!

Speaking of difficult to lug, our final sponsor, Corsair, was probably laughing at us when they sent their (awesomely built, but a touch heavy) all new Vengeance K95 and K70 RGB keyboards to us to game with at the summit. I cannot fault the build quality of these outstanding keyboards, and as long as the one I get once they're released ends up sitting on my desk instead of strapped to my back, then everything is going to be okay...

Chinese sources have indicated that AMD has been working on an all new from the ground-up high-performance core for two years now led by Jim Keller the engineer behind the original Athlon XP & Athlon 64.
This new architecture is supposedly going back to AMD's traditional multi-core approach with no modularity or resource sharing.
The new core is set to follow Excavator which will be released next year.

    Sources : 1 2 3

    UPDATE :
The Chinese sources unanimously referenced "wall street" as their source, conveniently an interview with AMD's CEO Rory Read has just been published on WSJ.

Interestingly enough AMD's (and Intel's) high performance cores are always designed for servers. Both Bulldozer & Piledriver were engineered specifically with servers in mind. So it seems AMD's CEO has inadvertently reaffirmed the rumors floating around.

UPDATE 2 : This has been officially confirmed and is no longer a rumor. AMD is working on a new "from scratch" x86 high performance core along with a "sister" ARM core dubbed K12.

Jim Keller talking about K12 and "next-gen" x86 core @ AMD's Core Innovation Summit May 2014.

You can watch the full one and a half hour event here.

Lets get down to the stats
Uses the genetically superior pci-e gen 2.0 lane. supports DX 11 has 512mb of memory, wait a sec thats less then the 705, i guess the AMD marketers went to nvidia for a day. Thats all i can say about that card, I recommed you wait for a sapphire version, even though this is nvidia im sure a 8gb vram version will be arriving soon after launch.

    LASTLY

    the new god('s servant),

    the new flagship(mascot),

Here it is the GT 720

This you might notice is the same as the above card but its superior.

Its not a half rebrand, ITS A FULL REBRAND.

This card has a full 1gb of vram. If you convert that to bytes its 1.0737 X 10^9 which is a big number, if you tried to count to that number it would take... A LONG TIME.

Unlike the ferocity of the above cards, this one is on a whole new level, those cards have a straightly 1 smx unit whereas this dragonslayer has 2 smx units. THATS 200% THE PERFORMANCE, i think.

It also has the DNA of the gtx titan, the 680, 770, titan black, titan brown, every voodoo card and that crazy tall guy from fractal.

Well then its been great but thats everything ive got today lads, follow EVGA's step up plans because im sure you titan wielders will be gunning for one of these beauties soon.

Jeremytroid reacted to Cwazywazy in OC suicide on my old PC
So, I had the idea to throw my old computer together again and see how much extra juice I can squeeze out of it.

I put it all into an old case with my precious air cooler, an all copper heatsink with a 4000RPM blower fan on top.

    Specs:
    P4 3.0GHz with HyperThreading
    3GB DDR 400MHz RAM
80GB 7200RPM HDD with my old install of XP with quite a few issues
    Geforce 7600GS 512MB
Asus P4P8X motherboard ($15 off eBay years ago.)
    Turbolink 420W PSU

I replaced the thermal paste on the north bridge and taped an intake fan onto the back of the case. (Don't want my north bridge to melt and change colors like @tmcclelland455 did.) I also stuck a temperature probe into it with my dad's multimeter since it has no temperature sensor. Also, I couldn't find one of the clips for the heatsink so I had to make do with a couple zip ties.

Right now the CPU is running 44C at 1.575 volts. (WOW) The BIOS allows the CPU to go all the way up to just under 2 volts.. The CPU fan does sound like a jet engine though.. (Motherboard has no fan control support and I can't find my little fan controller thingy.)

I'm using 3DMark06 for my benchmarking. With everything at stock speeds I got 1964 points.

Ok, I'll probably get trolled by this thread as BS, but I read a few posts on other forums and someone posted they flashed their XFX R9 290 card to an Asus 290X bios and unlocked all their shaders. Well since I own two XFX 290 cards which I have posted results on a build thread I did on this forum

    http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/75201-gtx670-trisli-to-r9-290-xfire-watercooled/

and with the bios switch on reference card, I thought what the hell! I'll try it myself.

    Here's what I got.

Screenshot of the 290 pre flash

Screenshot of the 290 post flash

Now I did have to flash the second card again as GPU-Z was showing an anomaly but after successful second flash it reported just like the first card. I have rebooted and restarted gpu-z many times and so far it has reported the same amount over and over again. I could be dreaming but this could very well be a reality that I now have a 290X in xfire!

So of course the next step is to do some testing.....here are my results so far. Both pre flash and post flash are clocked the same (1100Mhz/1300Mhz mem so far) What I have noticed though is under the Asus bios I had to up the voltage to 1.3 for it to run successfully at this speed under heaven benchmark, yet there was no voltage bump needed with the 290 bios.

    Valley Benchmark

    Xfx R9 290 bios

    Asus R9 290X bios

Heaven Benchmark (again, had to up the voltage to 1.3v for the Asus flash)

    Xfx R9 290 bios

    Asus R9 290X flash

Looks like the 6950 to 6970 days could be back. However I take no responsibility for anyone screwing up their cards if they attempt this. I have also read that a few with Sapphire and other cards it didn't work, so who knows if all cards will be able to convert.
