I went to go rent The Interview today and I got this error message.

What the crap are you doing, Google? First, you force everybody who wants to comment on a YouTube video to link their account to a Google+ page and then you deny them the ability to purchase from you? Do you not want to take my legitimate money?

Has this happened to anybody else or is it just me? Either way, this is no way for Google to conduct themselves.

Near the beginning of the stream, both Linus and Luke said the website is wrong and it is actually a random draw of three people that have the correct answer, not the first three. I thought it was kind of stupid too, so I was glad to hear it's random.

DO IT. Anything to take money away from AT&T.

But in all seriousness, I think I would be ok with it as AT&T doesn't have any control over what videos are released and what is said in those videos. Giving extra coverage to AT&T because of the sponsorship is expected, but I would not accept it if part of the sponsorship gives them the right to say "We don't like that video, so don't release it." As long as they won't be influencing the accuracy and biased-ness of the content itself (other than, like I said, more coverage of AT&T), then I would be ok with it, though I still wouldn't prefer it.

Yeah, but Amazon has some of the most powerful servers in the world. Their S3 servers host tons of huge websites, including Netflix, so that technically does make them in the same category, at least in some aspects.

There are tons of different cryptocurrencies. Since Bitcoin is open source, then anybody is able to make a crypto currency if they're able to host a blockchain and know what to do with the source code. If you want to, http://www.coingen.io/ offers a service where you pay to have your own crypto currency made, but it's pretty much useless unless you get a ton of miners on-board.

Jrjy3 got a reaction from Vitalius in Buttcoin Founder scammed by VP of Marketing for Butterfly Labs
The founder and main writer of Buttcoin.org, identified on reddit as /u/borderpatrol, revealed on /r/buttcoin that the website he once owned, buttcoin.org, was half-scammed out of his possession. After having some offers for the domain, a man named Jeff offered to buy the domain for "$XX,XXX", although the amount was confirmed to be less than $30,000.

Buttcoin.org was originally made by borderpatrol to "make fun of" bitcoin miners and was pretty popular at the time of the domain transfer. As stated in the source post, Buttcoin was "ranking between 3-4 for the search term "Butterfly Labs" and "Butterfly Labs Review" and was usually #1 for "Butterfly Labs Scam" and "Is Butterfly Labs ligit". It was obvious to me that the purpose of purchasing the site was to simply remove the negative articles that were destroying their search traffic and making them look bad."

The terms of the domain transfer were as follows:

After the transaction had been made, however, borderpatrol saw that his post entitled, "The $22,484.00 Butterfly Labs Mini Rig bitcoin miner is a huge, broken, unstable piece of shit." was renamed to "The Butterfly Labs Mini Rig is a sexy Bitcoin mining machine".

After doing a little research, borderpatrol found that Jeff was the VP of Marketing for Butterfly Labs and realized that this entire thing was to get rid of the most popular "hater" of Butterfly Labs. Jeff had even removed editing rights of borderpatrol even though it was in the agreement that he would be able to keep them.

Borderpatrol is temporarily posting on /r/Buttcoin instead of buttcoin.org for those who want to continue reading his articles.

In my opinion, this sounds like "typical scumbag company". Because their product isn't actually that great, they decided to get rid of the bad reviews instead of actually making the product better and actually showing that they care about their customers. This just tells me that Butterfly Labs knows that their product isn't great and makes me not want to buy their product even more.

Have you had any experience with Butterfly Labs? If so, was it good or bad?

Jrjy3 reacted to Cheezzzus in Make your GTA IV EFLC look INSANE
Hey guys, I recently read an article about awesome GTA IV graphics and it reminded me of a tutorial I made a while back on how to make your GTA IV look awesome if you have a halfway decent pc. I know there are a lot of walkthroughs out there but I combined a bunch of them because I'm basically using five mods and the order you install them in is VERY important. Also I took the time and did some research for the optimal in-game settings to go with these mods. So if you want your game to look like this (keep in mind that this isnt even with a high end pc and still playable >25 fps):

Only do this if your pc runs GTA IV at 30 fps on high settings, otherwise don't install iCEnhancer!

    step 1. downloading everything needed:

    iCEnhancer: http://www.shacknews.com/file/32415/grand-theft-auto-iv-icenhancer-21-final
    iCEnhancer config: http://www.gta4-mods.com/misc/rainbows-icenhancer-21-cinematic-config-f16017
Better city textures: http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=5906 (i recommend using the torrent)
    HD road textures: http://www.mediafire.com/?aczlzw12m4tlmr2
    Environment mod: http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=5726
    Coronas: http://www.mediafire.com/?d4zzmijrd52

Step 2: Make a full backup of your EFLC folder

Step 3. Installing all the mods in the correct order:
The first mod you want to install is the iCEnhancer. For this first extract the files in the rar file to a location of your choice. Now for EFLC the folder you need is 1.0.7.0 - EFLC. Open the folder and simply copy everything in the main files folder. Now paste this in your EFLC game folder. Say yes to merge all maps, and yes to replace the files. OPTIONAL (do this if you are having problems with the red sky): go into the shaders folder and open the rar file, copy the shaders map. Now go to EFLC\common and paste, merge folder and replace files as usual.
Now you want to go on and unpack the environment mod. If you've done this simply copy all the folders inside the grand theft auto IV map. Paste these in your EFLC, and again merge folders and replace files.

the next step isnt required, it just makes the game look better and run smoother if you have a decent pc. you can try to optimize your game graphics yourself using the in-game options.

Now open up notepad and put this in:
    -memrestrict 699145600
    -forcehighqualitymirrors
    -notimefix
    -novblank
    -noprecache
    -framelimit 30
    -novblank
    -noprecache
    -norestrictions
    -noswapdelay
    -renderquality 4
    -shadowdensity 0
    -viewdistance 0
    -detailquality 100
    -shadowquality 3
    -reflectionquality 4
    -reflectionresolution 2048
    -shadowresolution 2048
    -waterquality 0
    -waterreflectionquality 5
    -minspecaudio
    -dx10
    /high

Then click save as, and save the file in your EFLC game folder with the name "commandline.txt"
If there already is a commandline.txt, just paste the above commands in there and you're set.
Good now you can install the better city textures mod, open up the better city texture folder and open the folder called Grand theft auto IV. Now copy the map pc and paste in your EFLC game folder. Merge folders and replace files.

You're almost done now, open up the HD road textures and copy the map pc again and paste this in your EFLC game folder. Merge folders and replace files.
Now you go into the coronas file, then into the coronas folder and then copy the file coronas.wtd. Paste this file in EFLC\pc\textures. Replace the original coronas file.
Go to your iCenhancer config and choose "cinematic feel - Normal Gameplay" in here you want to copy iceconfig and iceshader.fx, paste these directly into your EFLC map. If your computer isnt that great (you get around 25-30 frames on high settings normally) open up the performance mode folder and copy that iceconfig, paste this into your EFLC map. For all the pasting, again just replace files.

Now you launch your game, if it crashes make sure you don't have any other programs running, in my case "core temp" made it crash.
Load up your game and go into options. Here you adjust your display settings to 50% brigthness, 20% contrast and 100% saturation for the best visual looks. And if you want to have the motion blur deselect the "definition" option. Only do this if your pc can handle everything at max otherwise it will look more pixelated that blurred!

    ENJOY!

Sadly for a normal GTA IV install I don't know exactly what to do but you need to make it "modable" first. In this case google will be your best friend as I have no experience with modding the regular GTA IV.

If you want to try other mods there is also "ultimate graphics tweak", "ENB by Vucko" and much more HD or 4k textures out there. There are also crazy vegetation mods and mods that make the cars even better.

Warning You might experience a red sky at times, don't worry nothing is broken this just occurs at times when you are running all these mods together

If you have a superbeast pc you might wanna turn up all the settings in iCEnhancer and really get blown away by the textures and graphics! Imagine what we could do with a good GTA V port...

ps I did a quick search through the forum and didnt find another thread like this, but if there is one please don't get all mad

Jrjy3 reacted to nicehat in DirectX & OpenGL to open up low-level access
It looks like Microsoft has finally taken notice of the threat AMD's Mantle is to its DirectX API and is looking to revitalize it.

According to the Game Developer's Conference Scheduler, Microsoft invites attendees to come and check out the gains it has made in raw performance as well as new features. It will also massively cut back on the CPU bottleneck that some games have to deal with, making it a lot easier for developers.

"Come learn how future changes to Direct3D will enable next generation games to run faster than ever before," the address reads.

"In this session we will discuss future improvements in Direct3D that will allow developers an unprecedented level of hardware control and reduced CPU rendering overhead across a broad ecosystem of hardware."

In addition to  DX improvements, Microsoft is also hoping to tweak OpenGL to something more usable and with less driver overhead. In-fact, they are hoping to remove driver overhead altogether. It looks like many companies may be getting on board to help. Not only is there possible cooperation between companies like Microsoft and Sony, but old graphics rivals AMD and Nvidia too. Epic Games, Samsung, ARM and several others are all onboard, so we could see some big developments in OpenGL soon too.

" In this unprecedented sponsored session, Graham Sellers (AMD), Tim Foley (Intel), Cass Everitt (NVIDIA) and John McDonald (NVIDIA) will present high-level concepts available in today's OpenGL implementations that radically reduce driver overhead--by up to 10x or more. The techniques presented will apply to all major vendors and are suitable for use across multiple platforms. Additionally, they will demonstrate practical demos of the techniques in action in an extensible, open source comparison framework."

    Sources:

    Direct 3D Future

    Evolving MC Graphics platform

Now I dont understand why we would see AMD and nVidia coming together to promote DirectX. Both had/have their own APIs and both dont seem to want to play nice. nVidia would love nothing more than DirectX to invalidate Mantle, and AMD would be selling itself short by giving DirectX a nod.

I certainly hope Direct X burns. They make improvements by bolting new features onto the same fundamental donkey once every 5-10 years. No matter how you dress it, Its still ass....

Why do you have to generalize everybody on this forum like that? That's one of the great things about a public forum, you get to share knowledge and learn from others. If people didn't come to a forum to learn/share information, then there would be no point to a forum at all. You don't have to get into such detail that it's only esoteric knowledge, but you can use tech-savvy language at expect people to know it. Besides, if you do that, then people will be more likely to trust your knowledge, whether right or wrong, because you would appear to know what's up.

One of the main reasons this forum exists is so people can learn about technology. Don't be afraid to use big words and use names of things that people might not know. If they're smart, they can go look it up for themselves and learn something.

I'm not trying to degrade or insult you, I'm just saying that if you truly are what you say you are (the network admin for a university), then this forum would benefit from you.

He also explains in layman's terms how VAC works and how the "raging war" in terms of cheats goes on between hackers and Valve.

To conclude the article, Gabe answers three questions that everybody is asking.

The reasoning behind this update to VAC seems to make more sense now, and I'm glad our Lord and Valve are being transparent about this. Steam is still a fantastic platform for distributing games and I will continue to trust it, at least, until another potential security issue arises.

I have not seen anywhere the fact that they store your history and I also haven't seen anything that says they share the history with any 3rd party. If either of these things were true, I wouldn't accept this as much as I do now. In regards to technology, you just have to know that everything you do can be and most likely is being tracked.
