  1. Depending on workout, I can’t imagine that “starvation mode” would be much more than a rounding error. Though my workout regimen is probably a bit harder. I don’t have a scale, but likely I started at close to 300 lbs. I work out for at least 2 hours every day after work (Day 53) consisting of 6-7 mile walks with steep hills mixed in (according to my phone, I get in about 90-100 flights). As my stamina has drastically improved, I also started including some running during lunch break, bringing me up another 2.4 miles (and as of last week, I can run those 2.4 miles straight without slowing). Adding in another mile or so during work, and hitting 10 miles/day isn’t uncommon. Occasional weight training and HIIT are also on the menu. Combined with a diet targeting 1000-1300 (Kilo)calories/day, it’s pretty aggressive, and I’m seeing pretty rapid changes both in body fat (I can actually see muscles in my forearms and neck, and I’ve already dropped a size in my shirts) and stamina. It’s definitely some learning though. Keeping myself motivated, whilst consistently hitting, and exceeding, my standards, day in and day out; and going entirely solo in my venture throughout, can be difficult. Though keeping that up is part of my goal.
  2. Note: I’m literally thinking as I go. One question in the back of my mind is if there’s enough motive in PC-space for a performant x86-64 emulator. Apple Rosetta shows it can be done, but outside pc gaming, there’s few consumer and even production applications that don’t already have ARM-compatible versions, and anything else (such as running old machinery) doesn’t need especially fast performance. Nvidia does already make SoCs and has experience with fast ARM custom designs, so I feel it makes sense (if they felt the market worth the investment) that they’d probably be a big player in hypothetical desktop ARM SoCs. Fast x86 emulation could be a pretty big selling point for Nvidia, assuming Intel and AMD don’t step up to the plate. Intel could also be uniquely positioned to really capitalize on the PC gaming market, as they’ve extensive experience in x86 (they built it) and ARM designs (and everything in between), and have massively ramped up their GPU tech in a big way. Intel has the pieces they need, so if they’ve put investment into designing good ARM cores the past few years, the moment desktop shifts to ARM could see Intel snapping up huge market share very quickly. I’m unsure if dedicated GPUs will even be a thing in the ARM desktop world. Though there will always be a need for more compute (for more than just gaming), so I’m reasonably confident that dGPUs are not going away. In which case, the status quo seems more likely. I don’t see Qualcomm putting much investment into speedy x86 emulation, not like Apple did with Rosetta anyway.
  3. Pretty notably as well, Intel HD 3000 (Sandy Bridge) matches or beats out the then-current Radeon HD 5450, and outpaces the GeForce 310. This kind of killed the bottom rung stuff in short order.
  4. It’s official. I am currently in better shape, than I was as a high school kid. Did a >mile job here, with some uphill. Definitely couldn’t do that as a teen.

Lets go!!!! I've been working on getting in better shape too. Put on easily 30ish lbs in a year, but I've lost about 8 in two months which is nice! Staying motivated is my biggest issue

Yeah, in about 7 weeks, I went from getting pretty winded at the too of a hill, to hills not bothering me much. It took pretty considerable toil to get there though.

In those 7 weeks, I’ve been walking hills in my area every day, for 6-7 miles, as well as adding in occasional HIIT sessions. I’ve also recently added miles during work breaks as well, bringing up the miles considerably. Yesterday, I ticked over 11 miles total, on a work day at that.

The diet has changed pretty greatly too. I generally target between 1100-1300 calories/day, with emphasis on lower carbs. Some days I’m a bit higher, and sometimes a bit lower, though even on “cheat” days, I’m pretty close to the mark. Pretty drastic improvement from before March though.

Tbh, I can likely do much more running than a mile, as I am now, if I can get my mind into gear. I’d also like to procure a weight vest at some point as well, to add further intensity.

Ya love to hear it. I've been getting into back into biking shape, as each year I bike super far. Last year I biked across the entire state of michigan in 3 days with about 40 people. Just takes a bit of training that I have slacked on. Also good to hear that you're sticking to a diet!

I plan on getting a motorcycle pretty soon (that new Ninja 500 looks like it will probably be what I go for), so stamina isn’t just a “nice-to-have”, but a necessity to safely do longer trips. It would be no joke to succumb to fatigue on 2 wheels, at 65+ MPH.

There’s also an element of discipline to be gained here as well. I want to be someone that can put in the work, to reach and hold my goals. I’ve a nephew to be a role model for.

  5. I’m pretty certain that VP9 won’t be going anywhere for a long time, at least, as very many smart TVs, and other tv-connected boxes, are not able to playback AV1. (Technically, a software decoder can be done, but I rarely see a smart tv feel decently fast to begin with. Think an octa-core Cortex A53 SoC can do it?).
  6. Hardware AV1 has been around in PC-space for a bit longer than that. The i7-1165G7 in my laptop does AV1 playback in hardware, as does the GeForce RTX 3000 series and later. These I can confirm myself. Supposedly, RDNA2 GPUs (the RX 6000 series, sans the 6500) also supports AV1 decode. So I’m unsure if you’re referring to general availability of AV1 decode (in which case, it’s been pretty available for a couple years now), or simply ease of access for the general consumer.
  7. Past history suggests that YouTube generally keeps around old codecs. You can still force H.264 today, to use hardware acceleration on devices older than a decade. Additionally, I feel it likely YouTube has the capability to transcode VP9 and H.264 in real time, with very little cost. So storage requirements with supporting the older codecs would be negligible.
  8. Not a movie, but Serial Experiments Lain had, with startling accuracy, predicted how inextricable the Internet would be to modern society, back in the mid-90’s.
  9. That feeling of dread in my stomach, the strongest temptation to utter “Oh Shit!”, when a corporation entrusts me with Admin Privileges.

This is about how my reaction is.

Just substitute in "Oh God, I'm an Admin."

  10. Me: Trying to get a looping slideshow (from a USB Stick) going on a work TCL Android TV. No option for looping, though the TV, identical make and model, downstairs has it. Both TV’s are up to date, but then I found the Media Player app has different versions between the two. And there doesn’t appear to be any way to update this app separately.

    Me: “U Fkn WOT!?”

Also me: Tries to find another suitable app. Not even Google Photos is available. Now debating if I want to go the apk route for a workplace tv.

I only had an hour with Android TV, and I kind of hate it. And TCL. Both can go straight to hell.

      Big oof.

Couple that with trying to get a temperamental piece of lab equipment to cooperate (Quantachrome Poremaster, just changed out all the o-rings within reach, as it wasn’t holding a great vacuum), I’ve had better days. The day is definitely on the upswing now though, at the end of it.

Well if it is an Android TV at least you can tinker with it.
Enable developer mode on both, ADB into the TV which has the properly working APP, extract the APK.
ADB into the TV with the feature missing App, delete the APP (optionally back it up), install the APK you extracted from your previous step.

Or just install a different App.

  11. Probably the thing I actually miss about school, is just going outside to play some games or sports on the playground. Four Square, Kickball, (American) Football, Soccer, Basketball, etc.

That's good, we require physical activity.

Find an aerobic exercise you enjoy and indulge in it regularly for the rest of your life.

I’ve been doing fairly consistent walks in the hills for some months now, but not nearly enough to make serious gains.

For the past month though, I’ve tripled the daily steep hill climbs (6-7 miles/day plus occasional HIIT, and some resistance training), and greatly cleaned up my diet (low carbs, and targeting between 1100-1300 calories/day).

I don’t have a scale for numbers, but the drastic gains in stamina, and my clothing getting too big, already tells me about my progress so far. Even steep hill climbs, which just a month prior required me to stop for a quick break at the top, barely register in my heart rate nowadays. I’d like to add a weight vest or similar to up the intensity. I feel there’s a lot more potential to go further.

  12. That’s certainly one way to squeeze a ton of years out of a GPU.
  13. Ngl, it still boggles my mind a bit to see that 4.7 GHz number in task manager, coming out of a 28 watt laptop chip (i7-1165G7), and a pretty cheap Dell at that. This was a pretty lofty mark not very long ago, generally reserved for overclocking. It’s not as though Intel’s process sucks by any means. Rather, the competition has drastically stepped up their game. For the customer, certainly not a bad problem to have.
