Is a 60Gb Ssd Enough For Windows 10

Hi, I'm thinking of picking up a cheap 60gb ssd, will this be enough for windows 10 and a couple of programs like chrome, I do have a 1tb wd blue hdd for my games so this won't be an issue.

yes it's totally fine. i ran a 60gb ssd for a long time, and it was fine. just make sure you check your free space once in a while, because you need at least 16gb of free space to do the big Windows updates.

with Windows, and chrome and spotify, office etc. you will use approx. 30-40 gb of space. so yeah, fine.

what i would recommend is moving the default location of your Downloads folder to your hdd.

That would give you about 20 gigs of usable space.  Usually you need to leave about 10% free space on an OS drive.

You'll be fine. You'll need to keep larger programs on other drives (like your mentioned WD Blue), but the OS and web browser sure will fit.

Main System: Phobos

AMD Ryzen 7 2700 (8C/16T), ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 16GB G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3000MHz, AMD Radeon RX 570 4GB (XFX), 960GB Crucial M500, 2TB Seagate BarraCuda, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations/macOS Catalina

Secondary System: York

Intel Core i7-2600 (4C/8T), ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3, 16GB GEIL Enhance Corsa DDR3 1600MHz, Zotac GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB, 240GB ADATA Ultimate SU650, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

Older File Server: Yet to be named

Intel Pentium 4 HT (1C/2T), Intel D865GBF, 3GB DDR 400MHz, ATI Radeon HD 4650 1GB (HIS), 80GB WD Caviar, 320GB Hitachi Deskstar, Windows XP Pro SP3, Windows Server 2003 R2

no it won't. it gives you 50 gigs of ree space, -16 gigs for future Windows updates abotu 32GB, which is more than enough for Chrome and a few other apps.

60GB would work, but you'd be pushing it in the future and would probably have to look at clearing some cache files or similar at some point.

No, it would be about 20-30GB of free space. Once Windows is installed and some apps are installed - you're looking at somewhere between 30-40GB being used. Given that the drive in question is 60GB, I don't know where you go 50GB free from.

Stop and think a second, something is more than nothing.

Thanks everyone, looked at some other forums, I think for an extra $20 I'll go for a 120gb to avoid any headaches.

I was using 64GB for a year, but after all updates and temp files it gets full very fast.

I simply can't recommend anything below 100GB for Windows, based on my experiences.

Windows takes up 10 gigs. then you have 50 left over. -16 for free space for updates, that's 34, put chrome and steam on it's 30.

Like what others said, it'll be fine for a lot of users if you are fine with keeping larger programs on the HDD. One tip: you can compress the Windows folder down quite a lot by running the command "compact.exe /CompactOs:always". Also, you can compress other programs and games with Compact.exe too. I would use CompactGUI for that though because commands can be a bit confusing https://github.com/ImminentFate/CompactGUI/releases

Compact.exe can save a lot of space without much performance difference on a modern system.

This is the right choice. 60GB SSDs will die faster, and aren't as fast as a larger drive.
