Xbox 360 Elite hard drive upgrade

Hola, and welcome to another topic I have to make because my school blocks too many damn sites!

 

I might be getting an Xbox 360 Elite off a friend of my dad's, and I was wondering if I could buy a 1TB 2.5" SATA hard drive and throw it in the little enclosure and have it work, and if it doesn't work with a 1TB drive then probably a 500GB drive.

 

Can I even do this without any modding done to the damned thing or suspension of my account (I've heard of that happening to people)?

 

I really don't want to be stuck with an old and slow and tiny 120GB drive, so this is why I ask.

Gotta install them games to the hard drive. As it is I have about 30 more games in mind, and the ones I have right now take up a third or more of the little 120 gig drive in the family 360.

Unlike our PS3 at my mom's that has like a 500 gig drive and so far GT5 is the only game that uses the fuckin thing. Not even GTA IV, which has HORRIBLE load times uses it.

No, if MS detects the hardware change, the Xbox's MAC address is blacklisted. I am not sure if your Xbox Live account is affected.

I have a 120GB Elite that I want to upgrade because the drive is old and I don't want it to die. I am considering fixing one of the spare consoles that I have and modding it to take a larger drive and see what the whole process is like. I don't pay for Live usually, but I would like to keep one console whitelisted.

You can clone the HDD in there over to a larger one and just use that (2Tb is the limit I believe due to MBR)

I'm using a custom (regular 2.5", not Microsoft) 320GB hard drive in my 360S and I'm not banned. I don't know if it'll work for a 1TB or a 360 Elite though.

If upgrading the hard drive proves to be too much work at the moment, use USB flash drives as a temporary solution. With the recent software updates to the Xbox 360, 64GB drives can be formatted and recognised by the system.

This was the guide I used. It says up to 500GB and only certain WD drives work, so if the 500GB "backup" drive is a WD it might work.

I actually did this, If you open up the hard drive casing you will notice that its just a regular Western Digital. Xbox has it formatted in a certain way to make it "Microsoft licensed". So if you can find that format and do it successfully, it might work.

Well, I didn't say it wasn't against the terms of service (I don't know whether it is or not), I just said I didn't get banned. The guide doesn't say anything about terms of service or warranty, although I'm sure breaking seals to unscrew stuff on the old 360 is voiding the warranty (if there was any left).

I have no warranty, I was just worried about the hardware modification notice that I read in the ToS some years ago.

With my Xbox 360 Slim I just went to the store, bought a 320GB hard drive and it's a plug n play. Wait, dude don't buy a 360. Get a current gen. console.

If he isn't playing current gen multiplayer games, and he is getting it free/cheap, it isn't a big deal. I haven't bought a current gen console because all of my games are single-player or local co-op. I don't touch my consoles much, and when I do, it is usually the older ones.

True, however I think I would take that 360 and sell it for $. Arguably the last gen. consoles are obsolete. I just don't see and logic in spending $ on a 10 year old console, it just don't make any sense.

Oh you know, sometimes you can't play some of the games on newer consoles or a PC. Some of us may not have jobs and therefore limited money. And maybe, just maybe, there's only ONE game you want on current gen consoles, which makes spending 400 freaking dollars on a glorified toaster completely pointless.

I had this problem and got hold of a 360 slim HDD took the casing off and and replaced the one in the original 360. Because it was a MS HDD no formatting was required it just worked from the off. the only down side is the case of the donor was destroyed.

You may need a torx driver to open the elite HDD case.
