Ultrabook Discussion - Portable but Powerful

rikaragoza

Hey Guys! Been checking out a few laptops for quite sometime now, and I've noticed that the ultrabooks nowadays are geared towards "CEO" type of users wherein a setup of i5/i7-16GB/32GB RAM-512SSD and is 12"/smaller and lightweight are close to non-existent.

There are a few ultrabooks that are close to the specs above, but most of them use core M and are at a 8GB (max) of RAM.

Do you have a recommendation for a laptop with these kind of specs? Thank you!

Units that are on my list right now are the following:

- Surface Pro 4

- Surface Book

- Dell XPS13 (8GB RAM Limitation)

- Venom Blackbook 13

- MSI GS30 2M Shadow

- New Razer Blade

Surface Pro 4 - Custom, 16GB RAM + 256GB Storage + i5 :)

That's what you should get!

So far that's the top choice!  :)   Do you think this one can run VMWare and high performance applications?  Do you have other machines/models that are similar/better?

All the Ultrabook like devices are basically 2c4t running up to about 3.5Ghz and topping out at 16GB RAM. Its not a monster performance machine because its a small ultra portable first but its still got decent grunt for bursts of time. VMWare isn't really a hog of anything but RAM but of course what you run under it can be the issue. As to high performance applications its an i3 from the desktop world, if that would be enough then its still enough. The kicker is however that if you max out the cores you will quickly find most of them throttle and they can do so all the way down to about 800Mhz, and the noise they make before they get there can be quite impressive!

I am not being overly negative I am just trying to frame the limitations of the devices, they are great for bursts of high usage for applications that are fine with 1-2 cores and they can have enough RAM to do just about anything a desktop can, but they can't sustain performance for a long time. So as a workstation like thing they do programming fine but aren't any good for video editing.

I use an HP Spectre x360 and it is pretty powerful and it is about the thinnest, lightest, and most powerful 2-in-1 out there.

There is a version with an i5-5200u, but they also recently released a skylake version. Comes with 8GB of RAM but is upgradeable to 12. From what I've seen its very similar to the xps13, but slightly larger and a couple of hundred dollars cheaper.

Is the possibility of buying an "outdated" laptop and just upgrading it to the maximum possible specs somewhat bettter?  Any recommendations?

Say an older 12" laptop with a good display and is capable of having 16GB RAM + swap in a SSD?  Personally I don't really require touch screen but at the moment all high-end models are putting this into the bargain (consumes more battery in my opinion).
