Z170 vs X99

Gonna be using this as a workstation(Virtual Machines, computing, etc...) and gaming. Which would be a better choice for a £1000-1500 build?

I think Paul's Hardware just did a $1500 (USD) X99 build. It would definitely be the better of the two for your uses.

X99 more cores = more computing power and will satisfy you in that sense.

X99. For that price, probably the 5820K.

Do you want a partlist created?

Thanks for the offer, I've looked at a combo of the 5820k and X99 Deluxe board from Asus to enable 3 way SLI. I already have a GTX 970 and I'm gonna add another for 2 way.

X99 more cores = more computing power and will satisfy you in that sense.

I'm gonna be aiming more towards GPU computing where possible but of course CPU cores are very useful, obviously

Alright, can you give a reason? It's all good and well you saying that, but without a reason your opinion is almost pointless.

well for a starter the x99 platform was made specifically for workstations and this is the reason for more cores, also if youre in the us, microcenter sell the 5820k for cheaper than a i7 6700k.. you cannot say no to that, the 5820k is quite the bit better.

the only reason anyone would choose skylake over x99 is the tdp which isnt exactly much different and also that they will oc better.

also the point you made saying "without reason your opinion is almost pointless" is a bit harsh and considering these guys know what theyre talking about its pretty simple when they say x99 they mean choose x99 its better.

On X99, you can get a 6 core 5820k and a mobo for around the same price as Skylake. You get more pci lanes from X99, better for multi gpus, more cores = more compute power. Really the only thing that Skylake has is the ability to run multiple M.2 drives up to 64gbps, but it really doesn't matter in a workstation I would assume.

That's a good reason. I don't live in the US, but Scan Computers do sell the 5820k cheaper than the 6700k. So, yeah, might go with X99 now.

By the way, you name sounds familiar. If we've met before, hi again.

Again, seems like X99 is just the better way to go. This is just reinforcing my beliefs.

so youre from the uk? i use scan theyre a very good retailer. uk  prices do suck compared to the us :(

usa 5820k $300 (£194)

uk 5820k  £303 ($466)

we would essentially be paying 170 dollars more..... fuck you uk vat.

x99 is easily better, it's also more expensive though. Still, with 1500 bucks you should be able to fit it nicely.

so £23 more than we pay, but it depends what retailer, some sell it for the price you technically pay.
