Safe to run 80C for 3 hours?

Raiden60

So, I want to run a folding @ home thing overnight, and I'm wondering if it's safe to run the CPU at the temperature of 80C for the 3 hours it will take to simulate the folding. Are these temperatures safe? Processor is an AMD Athlon X4 860K.

Intel? Yes.

AMD? No. It should NEVER get that high ever.

Erm... I thought AMD was the one that got hotter. It certainly seems like it.

Certainly not on an AMD CPU. Try to get below 65C, 65 is the most I would go.

You don't anything running that hot but its generelly fine with Intel and Nvidia/AMD GPUS. AMD cpus however should never run that hot.

Are you overclocking? How are you measuring the temp? maybe it was an error from the sensor.

I'm using Aida64 to measure the temperature. There are actually 3 temperature readings for the processor. There is CPU, which is 80 under load, and CPU core #1 and CPU core #2, which just seem like lower readings, and don't really seem consistent. On this image, they seem consistent but most of the time the readings fluctuate.

The processor is at stock, 3700MHz with 4000MHz turbo.

No. An AMD cpu should never go over 70c. Get a better cooler if you're getting those temperatures or try reapplying thermal pase (or dialing down any overclocks).

nope, it shoots out more heat but it also needs to be cooler. The amd stock cooler is actually significantly better than the intel one because of this.

As far as I know most AMD CPUs start to throttle above 64degrees C, so you might have a problem if your temps are that high :/

Specs: CPU: AMD FX 6300 Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A DS3P RAM: HyperX Fury 16GB 1866MHz GPU: MSI R9 270 OC edition Case: Sharkoon VS3-S SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB HDD: 1TB Caviar Blue PSU: Corsair CX500W

Then how come my temps are so high? Should I call AMD? My temps seem to stay up at this range too, for some reason.

If you really have an AMD CPU then you need to stop now and find out what is going on. You have to get your temps under control as 80°C is NOT acceptable and potentially dangerous.

Before calling amd try cleaning the heatsink, reapplying thermal paste (tim is dirt cheap), making sure the case's airflow isn't being restricted by dust or its surroundings. Reset your bios to make sure no automatic overvolting is going on. Check that the cpu fan is plugged on the right pins, it shouldn't make a difference but you never know.

Also, try using different measuring tools (msi afterburner, hwmonitor) to make sure aida64 isn't trippin'. It's possible that 80c is actually the socket's temperature, in which case it should be fine.

You may need to clean out your heatsink/re-apply the thermal paste as suggested by the guy above me. Make sure you only put a little bit, and don't spread it. Putting the heatsink on will do that. It might also be your case's airflow. check to make sure all your fans are facing the right way and that there is air flowing through your CPU heatsink to cool it off.

And I'll go ahead and repeat what everyone else said. NO! Do not go past 60-65C on an AMD CPU under any circumstances! Tj. Max is 70C but don't even go near that. If you want more room to maneuver then use an Intel CPU. They can go a lot hotter without throttling.

I can't help but go over the temperature. It's not like I can do anything about it. I've not touched the clock settings.

If that's the case, you desperately need to upgrade your CPU cooler to something more potent... Additionally you could try your hand at undervolting, but getting better cooling should be higher up your priority list, because even very thorough undervolting is unlikely to lose you 15 degrees. I took 0.15V off of my Phenom II and lost around 5 degrees under load; any further reduction is quite unlikely, I'd say.

If it was an older Athlon or a Phenom II I'd say yes, however being one of the newer CMT Athlon you really should keep it below 65oC.

Well, I've emailed AMD and they still haven't gotten back to me, I haven't noticed any performance issues so I'm just assuming that it's a faulty sensor.

More likely is just the external temperature probe giving an incorrect reading, AMD had good thermal sensors in their CPU, then they went prehistoric with CMT.

Chances are, I'll just install an aftermarket heatsink, like the 212 evo. Or I just won't give a fuck and see what happens. I have warranty.
