how do i set up a media server without free nas just using: a smart switch a intel nic and a raid controller

How do we have anything to go on here? Does your NIC and RAID controller just float in mid air with nothing else attached? Full specs of what you plan on running this on would be great.

Plug drives into Raid card.

Set-up in some configuration.

Install OS.

Install Applications.

 

 

 

But in all seriousness, what are you trying to achieve?

How many drives are we talking? Are you competent with linux configuration, or do you just want to do something Windows based?

What are you wanting to stream to? An htpc, a roku, playstation, etc?

 

As @Eniqmatic asked, what is the rest of your hardware configuration.
