AMD openCl vs Nvidia Cuda for help with rendering

What is better for rendering videos? (On consumer grade graphics cards like gtx 970 vs r9 290x)

What programs are compatible with each technology?

Most famous rendering programs support both. As for performance, they are both pretty close, it comes down to the power of the card itself. An r9 290x should be more powerful than a 970, although significantly less power-efficient.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

The only benchmarks I have are these 2:

I asked about these graphics cards specifically because they have the same price and I noticed the r9 290x did better than the 970 in Witcher 3 on 4k resolution and so I wanted to ask about rendering. I think I'll buy a 290x as my next graphics card

can't go wrong with that card, although make sure you don't buy one with the reference cooler: they are loud and run a bit too hot for my taste. Any aftermarket design should be fine.

The Maxwell architecture is not natively supported by mainstream video editing tools as of yet. Neither the Adobe Suite, or Vegas Pro. As such, I am still running my Radeon 6870 to take advantage of its OpenCL capabilities. The 290x is supported in the Adobe Suite, as well as Vegas Pro, as of its 13th iteration. Typically, CUDA has been utilized more in 3D modeling than OpenCL has, and OpenCL is more widely used for 2D editing, specifically things like mogra. (Motion Graphics.) There are exceptions, and these are not rules, but it is the norm.

Yea saw that in a review that the stockfan is loud, but no problem here I can't even get a reference card (haven't seen one "here" - aka Poland)

I know I was talking about consumer grade graphics cards but this video blew me away;
