can I make a new laptop from an old one?

axtellhammer

I have a still very use able HP laptop someone has given me. I want yo know how much trouble it would be (or if it is even possible) to remove all of the components into a custom case for it, such as a solid brief case.

In the process I would do some basic upgrades, the screen for 1. As well as an SSD and HDD and RAM upgrade.

Can anyone tell me If this is possible or what might be my biggest problem in trying this?

Upgrades are one thing, but putting it into another case would be a hassle, and nearly impossible

New PC: i7-4790k, Corsair H100iGTX, ASrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer, 24GB Ram, 850 EVO 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080 Fractal Design R4, EVGA Supernova G2 650W

Making a laptop is extremely difficult compared to a regular atx style PC, this is due to how small and compact the components are compared to large systems. I mean it is definitely doable, and considering you're not trying to pack it into a small case, I would give it a try.

You could move into a briefcase, but for the mods you are talking about, like the screen, the ssd, and the ram, they can all be done in the existing chassis, which would be much less cumbersome, and would still work like a laptop...

The hdd replacement should be no problem, but the ram could pose problems if it is soldered onto the motherboard.

Screen replacements aren't too bad if im not mistaken, as you can just look up replacements monitors for your laptop, and see if some of them are ips by any chance.

My problem is the old chassis itself. It is not in a useabke condition. But all other components work
