@Captain_WD @Mighty_Miro_WD -  Might be worth sharing the best way to get stuff off a drive before it fails, besides "back up!". :)

He did say the best way. A linux live CD. It's Free and you can just drag/drop your data from the failing hard drive to an external drive.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3700x / GPU: Asus Radeon RX 6750XT OC 12GB / RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4-3200
MOBO: MSI B450m Gaming Plus / NVME: Corsair MP510 240GB / Case: TT Core v21 / PSU: Seasonic 750W / OS: Win 10 Pro

Sure, but they very well might know something we don't, or what's the best for people who haven't done it before. ;)

And what would that be, besides backing up? I don't get your point.

just google for hiren's boot cd, throw it on a usb and boot to either windows embeded (and use nortons ghost) or load up clonezilla... or any other the cloning software on the usb. You will need to save the image to another external drive which will need to be at least the size of the used space on the faulty disk.

Keep in him if there are bad sectors you will be creating a copy of the bad sectors on your backup. might just be eaiser to boot to the windows installer and connect a external HDD and copy the files, with the directory stucture, but no permissions through a CMD prompt in the windows installer.

Hey AlanAlan,

Before attempting anything that might corrupt your data, can you give us the brand/model of the drive? How is it plugged (internally, externally)? Can you hear it spin up, are there any clicking sounds? Can you see the drive in BIOS and is it recognized properly by model and size?

As the guys suggested, you can use Linux Live CD or some other third-party software to try to recover your files. Another option is to plug the drive on an already working system and see how it's recognized in device manager and disk management. If it's recognized, I would suggest running a brand specific diagnostic tool to see what the exact problem is. If the drive's format has gone into RAW mode, you can look up some third-party software that are specifically designed to fix that. Your safest bet is a data recovery company, but their services can be costly.

Captain_WD.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
