Unreal Engine 4 - is it hard to learn?

ManOfDisguise

I'm amazed by what Unreal Engine 4 can do and since its free I guess it wont hurt to try it. Im downloading it now(almost done). I watched the 1st video of the tutorials from UE4 about geometrylayout and it seems that this engine isnt so hard to use. However I have never really played around with engines, like ever. But I would just love to create some scenery or buildings or something like that just for fun to see what I can make.

So is it hard to get into this sort of stuff? Do I need to like download some textures or stuff like that or is there already a bunch of stuff to use in the engine itself?

Specs of my PC:

Half of the battle is learning the UI. Just play around with it - the more you try, the more you learn

There are cool tutorials on youtube you can follow along with as well

Asset placement is easy.

Automation is fair.

UI is semi-difficult.

But full customization to what you want is hard.

The projects never end in my line of work.

I think I'm going to mess around with it as well. Always been interested in game design.

As previously stated, the UI is the hardest part to learn with these things. Besides learning where everything is, all the shortcuts and whatnot, the only other obstacle you will face is learning art. If you don't draw or do anything else like that before you start, the learning curve might be a bit harder.

I don't know if Unreal Engine provides a lot of resources but I would imagine they provide "stock" resources for the user to mess with. You always have the option of getting more textures as well.

Good luck!

Oh, and game creation is incredibly fun (and I've just dabbled in simple stuff haha).

Someone needs to make an LTT game.

Maybe...Slick flips his lid and goes on a rampage, kidnaps Linus, and forces him to make youtube videos, at gun point? lol just spitballing here.

i messed with it a bit. Feels fairly intuitive compared to other engines imo. Like any engine though, it will take some time to learn all the ins and outs of the software.

I dont think theres such a thing as a hard engine brother the only hard part is learning either visual script or C++ to actually make a game and also creating content like characters with properly working animations/effects.

The engine or any engine UI is pretty easy the more you practice the more u get used to it and UE4 is medium diffictuly id say, while Unity is easy difficulty UI wise.

So dont worry about that, worry about how you are going to program your games VisualScript/C++ and how you are going to create content for it.
