CPU Choice

Hello, I am wondering weather the i5 4690k devils canyon or the i7 5820k are better for most AAA games. I am planning to have 2 290x's in the same system and if I get the i5 I will be able to get the 2 290x'x immediately without having to save up slightly more. I really like the look of the motherboard that I want to go with the 5820k, so that might sway my decision. but as said before my rabmble, Which is better for most gaming and general use? (price excluded)

Thanks!

Well, the i7 5820k has of course more power, but it's also pretty expensive to build a X99 gaming rig.

You've to get a X99 motherboard, DDR4 RAM and of course the CPU, which should already cost you alltogether around a 1000$.

A Z97 rig with a i5 4690k is a lot cheaper and you probably won't even notice any difference in gaming.

So I would recommend the i5. And also there are some really nice motherboards for socket 1150.  ;)

here are my choices:

X99: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/bJsPLk I will need to save up slightly for the 2nd 290x, and the 1500 watt psu is for EVENTUALLY xfiring quad 290x's (don't judge, bragging rights)

EDIT- oops just noticed that that mobo wont do quad 290x's

Z97: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vQTVRB    Still planning on xfiring quad 290x's

Thanks!

My budget is 1600 appx

Z97 usually only support 2-way SLI and Crossfire.

There are a few motherboards that support it tho: http://geizhals.de/?cat=mbp4_1150&xf=3784_4-Way-CrossFireX&sort=p

Have a look on this site. The motherboards are listed below. It's german site, easier for me.

Oh and I forgot, that an i5-4690k only 16 PCIe-lanes has. So, 4-way Crossfire won't work at all afaik.

Edit: It would work, but only at 4x,4x,4x,4x. Or if you have a motherboard with a PLX-chip or something like that (just had to look it up) it would increase the number of PCI-e lanes so you could run 8x,8x,8x,8x.

And it seems most boards that have support for 4way Crossfire and SLI have that build in anyway.

Very confusing, tho. So I would check that you've everything you need and make sure it works. Otherwise you end up with two cards lying around... :P

Go with the 4690k. The 5820k will bring nothing to the table for gaming except if you are looking to stream in high quality preset and and the entire build will be much expensive.

Good suggestion. Go ahead.

That does not answer the question of 4690K vs 5820K for gaming.

Go in the middle and get Z97 board and i7-4790K?...as for GPU's you'll never be able to run FOUR R9 290X in the same case...they draw way too much power...and the performance gains from adding a third GPU' are such that it's not even worth getting a third card, let alone a fourth.

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |

actually, the wattage usage will be around 1300, easily enough for a 1500 with some room for in case. Also, the heat would be nice in the winter but horrible in the summer. I'm thinking that I'll do the x99 rig and eventually add up to three 290x's. That MIS bobo for the x99 is beautiful and would pair nicely with an fx model

if you can afford X99 and DDR4 memory and you feel like doing it, then why not...but i'd build a Z97 with an i7-4790K and two GTX 980 in SLI personally.

what black kobo would you reccomend for z97 under 200 with at least 3 PCI 16 lanes? Or is it pcie16. I know it's 16

Z97 works best with only TWO graphics cards...once again.

There are SOME z97 boards with a PLX chip that can do 3 or 4 way SLI/crossfire but those are very costly...

Here are the boards that could run 3 GPU's:

Here is what i would build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

thanks, I'm not the most edjumacated about motherboards, but I did like that link. (Seriously). I suppose then that I will go x99. Thanks!

make sure you do your research about running 3 graphics cards and how and why it's not a good idea to use more than 2 GPU's...the 3rd card will be sitting there doing nothing most of the time...and when it will actualy work it will introduce a lot of inconsistency and micro-stuttering.

Two GPU,s is really the max you want to go.

Yeah I am totally with nanosuits boy. Much better idea to 2 way SLI 980s and put some extra money elsewhere.

Intel 4790 K - R9 295X2 - Gigabyte Z97-SLI - Corsair Vengeance Pro Black 1866 CAL9 - Corsair HX 1000 -Samsung 850 EVO SSD - Samsung HDD - H100I - Corsair C70 - G400 Logitech - Asus VS247H - WASD custom mechanical and QCKPAD!

Staples of LTT: Getting an 4690 K will resurrect your lost family members, AMD = More heat thus AMD = Satan.
