What can this run?

adamsjus1

So I have been thinking about upgrading my current computer. And it would help me upgrade if I had a use for the old parts. So what kind of minecraft server/ home server/ NAS can be run on a

                                       fx-4130 at 4.5ghz

                                       8gb of RAM

My parents do have a couple of different hard drives that they would want to connect to the network.

And I know my friends and I get on minecraft every now and again and would love to be able to run a server for 10 at max! (most of the time 4) people. Can it do it?

I would think so, give it a try!  worst case scenario it's not as good as you hoped but you learned how to setup and maintain a server!

Why can't you just RENT a server...

1. Cost $$

2. Servers are a learning experience for me at least and servers have real-world applications

op- Also you could Rent out a serve

Because money. And I have the parts so my not try? I don't have the money to just rent a server when ever I decide to play. And also I need to figure out how to set up a NAS to the network anyway.

Because that costs money, and you minus well use what you got.

That should be able to run a decent server for 10people, the only thing  that might step in your way, is your internet speed. If your internet speed isn't good enough then its just going to lag everything.

The fileserver idea. If the motherboard has onboard RAID, you could setup a decent server. But I suggest you get NEW drives and don't use your old ones otherwise you will loose all your files when a drive unexpectly fails and you loose your porn.... I mean gospel music collection.

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

You will be able to fit 6Harddrives in, and it has the capabilities of RAID 0,1,10. I reccomend RAID0 if you don't plan on storing "mission critical" data. So don't be storing stuff that can't be recreated. RAID1 will basically put your data on 2drives so if 1 fails, you have a backup of the data. RAID10 would be the best because it combines RAID0 and 1. But it does take 4drives to get started.

RAID0 basically "stripes" your data. So in simple terms, it stores half of a file on 1 drive, and the other half on another. Which increases the speed of your storage. But it also doesn't have any redundancy so if 1 drive fails, you are going to loose your files.

In order to do RAID0 you need 2 exactly the same drives

If you go into windows disk manager you can make a striped volume which is Raid 0 but I think you can also do it on the bios or something like that
