My First Ever Build (5 Months Later)

BlizzardDUCK

Hi all, this is my first post in the forums, and a new subscriber to the Youtube channel yesterday. I have been looking to build a PC for about a year, and decided this was the time to start. I'd like to start off by saying what I do and how I got here. I am an architectural engineering student in my 2nd semester of my junior year. I also work part time at The Home Depot. I got my current laptop (Dell XPS 15) for my high school graduation and it got me started really in gaming on the PC. I'm into racing Simulators like iRacing, Game Stockcar, and Assetto Corsa, but I do also play Fifa, MX Simulator, and dabble with a bunch of other games, but racing really takes the cake for me. I recently, in the past 6 months, have noticed that my laptop is becoming outdated and it no longer runs a lot of the games it once did. It started crapping out on games it used to run really well, and I think it overheats. Took it to a shop few months ago and had them do a clean on it and redo the thermal paste on the CPU, didn't really know what I was doing with a laptop maintenance and didn't want to mess it up. It has been my daily driver since 2012 and I think its time to get a dedicated gaming rig.

A friend of mine just did his first ever computer build 3 months ago. I took his parts list as a base point and started researching this weekend on what I should get for parts, hence how I found Linus. I set a goal to have a final draft of a build by the end of this week, my vacation from class and work. I would like some opinions on the system draft I currently have.

Here are the goals of my build:

  1. Be able to run Oculus Rift CV1 <<(#1 goal)
  2. $1100-1300 price range
  3. Run games at a decent FPS and graphically
  4. So some general game capture (youtube short videos, but nothing major)
  5. Little photoshop work (painting cars for games)
  6. Even though I'm an architecture student, nothing for CAD will be done on this build PC. My laptop still runs that OK and have lab PC's where I can do that
  7. Wifi compatible for peace of mind
  8. Run all my peripherals for racing sims, so 8 USB ports used simultaneously
  • Driving Force GT Wheel 1 USB
  • Keyboard/Mouse 1 USB (Currently combo, but want to get separate ones in the future so becomes 2 USB)
  • Oculus Rift in the future 1 USB
  • TH8RS shifter 1 USB
  • CSR Elite Pedals 1 USB
  • Turtle Beach Headset 1 USB
  • Logitech F310 Gamepad 1 USB
  • Xbox 360 Gamepad 1 USB [Not used with the other stuff, will unplug others to use this one]

So all that being said, this is what I currently have come up with

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/BlizzardDUCK/saved/2mcV3C

Please, if you suggest something other than what I have for a part, please explain why. I'm new to this building thing, would like to know why you suggest something else.

Edit: Should mention that I can get Windows 8 through my college for cheap, hence why it isn't on the build list.

I may say more ram, but thats just about all you could do better with.

Unless your alright with flashing bios get a z97 board. Also get 1 stick of 8gb memory so you can go all the way up to 32gb in the future.

So I see people like more RAM, so instead of just doing 1x8 GB stick, I'm going to go 2x8 GB sticks, and I switched to the Z97 Asus motherboard.

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/BlizzardDUCK/saved/Bq2Zxr

PC part picker told me estimated wattage was 350w, and ran Cooler Master estimated and it told me 317w, so I went 550w. Think that will be alright?

Are you going to want sli in the future? if so get a 650-750 watt psu. otherwise 550 is perfectly fine.

Not really a fan of the white case. Do you have any recommendations for black cases, preferably windows on the side too? I did go ahead and use the power supply from your build. Really want to stick with NVidia GTX 970 Graphics card, I did hear that the rift had been developed mainly using that card and many users on iRacing.com have been using that card with the Rift and its worked well for them.

For cases, here's what I recommend for your budget

The Air 540 is a great choice in my opinion if you don't mind a big square computer. Easy for cable management because it has 2 own compartments, one for the system, and one for wiring

The S340 is also good to build in. Easy cable management and has a basement to put your PSU in.

450D is also great. Big enough for you to put everything in and it has rubber grommets. It does look nice too.

Doesn't appear to be enough storage on that build though, 240gb fills up quite fast.

Thanks for the cases Matt. Even though I didn't select the ones you showed me, I did watch videos on them and lead me to the one I decided on. My friend had it in his build, and I really didn't want to use the same one because I feel like it would be cheating, but I did conclude I wanted that same case on my own. I chose to go with the Corsair Vengence C70 Black because it is roomy, has the side window I wanted, and does come with carrying handles which is a bonus.

Think this is my final draft, think I will place order tonight or tomorrow.

Good build you've got there, never actually had a VR set (hope I'll have one soon.) I heard plenty from a few sources that the Oculus Rift actually used  GTX 970 for testing so it would work nicely together. For adding all that peripherals you do need quite a bit of ports which you infact have.

Good Luck with your build

Here are 3 better units ranging from 550W to 750W.

But just one question, why a 970 instead of a 980? you could have fit it into your budget with a Xeon (same price as i5 but with i7 features) , a Z97 SLI motherboard, and a 250GB SSD.

I followed many builds on iRacing.com from people who were running DK2, and they were using 970's. Also a couple new builds chose to use 970 for Rift use. My friend also built his new computer with a 970, so I had many people I saw use them. Not many 980s I saw being used.

Bam, case is here.

980 is better for oculus rift as essentially is a dual display (one per eye)

Took me 20 mins to get the mobo in, IO shield was a PITA. Smooth sailing there on out. Just need to get my cooler on, and power supply comes in tomorrow, won't be able to finish it until Friday.

Just to get the motherboard into the case. Felt it was easier to clip that on and get the motherboard in place because its a low profile heat sink but still big enough to hold its edges, and can be removed when comes time to install the Cooler Master.

Oh right. Just make sure you remove the paste off the cpu before putting the coolermaster on. If you haven't switched it on then it should just wipe off. Don't do it with the cpu in the board though, as you don't want any paste getting on the socket etc.

Little scared to do a download from my school because I'm not entirely sure its going to work, rather just get a CD and know its going to work and have the disk if something ever goes wrong. I am going to order this optical drive, because I have Nascar Thunder 2004 and never got a chance to play it because my other computers weren't powerful enough to run it.

So I'm not sure what Windows 8 to get. Just the regular one, or Pro edition

I just found out that I need a bunch of Mobo drivers for my Asus Z97 after I install Windows 8.1.

Are there any other drivers I need before I start just doing my regular thing? I start back on it tomorrow, hope to have it running and have at least some game installed by tomorrow night.
