290x In my opinion.

This is not to do with the VRAM 970 issue as 1080p won't come close to the limitation of 3.5GB.

About 5 FPS faster than the 970 @ 1440p based on the benchmarks I did as well.

I had a G1 & 290x Lightning, overclocked the G1 to 1600/7600 and the 290x to 1200/6400, Lightning won in almost every benchmark I did, except Dirt 3.

It does use about ~100w more, and is slightly louder though.

I would of gotten 2 Lightnings instead of 2 G1's, but two G1's made more sense for my PC.

At 1080p the 970 will be better. If you plan to upgrade to 1440p/4K or add a second card in the future, 290X will be better

Did you make a thread for this comparison? Cause that'd be a nice thread to have around here.

No and yes. The 290x will be better at anywhere above 1080p, but some games like titanfall still take 3.5+ gigs of VRAM with insane graphics. Which games do u play

In my opinion it will be 970 if you play 1080.

290X lightning if you go over 1080.

Beside VRAMGATE 970 is the best card that you can get for the money.

Yeah but the r9 290x has double the TDP, kinda interessted how much money per year that is, also higher tdp means higher temps so still pretty important for me at least

No it really doesnt. The g1 has a 250w BIOS on it by default, basically any over clocking and it'll already be in the 200s.

The lightning doesn't really run much hotter, the cooler on it is amazing.

Yeah I used the reference design, both cards use more ofc when OCed

We aren't talking about reference though, we're talking about two power hungry binned GPUs :P

@Aniallation its in my buildlog somewhere, I won't bother making a thread because people will just bitch and moan about amd vs nvidia

Few people care about TDP though tbh

you should the higher it is the harder it is to overclock, the more likely it is to over heat ot also means a higher power draw

290X lightning if you go over 1080.

hi I own a 970 and let me tell you that at 1080p it is a total over kill for most games it runs most games VERY fluidly at 1440p it is also a killer in terms of overclocking I have been able to push the base clock to +200 MHZ withougt having to  increase voltage.

OP either card is really good dont listen to people saying it can onmly play at 1080p thats a flat out lie
