Is this a bottle neck?

Okay, i need your help guys! 

 

The hardware in question is a i5 4570 (non-Oc 3.3GHz-3.6GHz) and a G1 gaming Gtx970 (non-Oc 1177MHz-1329MHz)

 

I bought Crysis 3 today and loaded it up, knowing it was a very demanding game, i closed all unnecessary programs and also opened Gpu-z and task manager (yes i know its not the most accurate but its all i had at the time), any way, long story short, when in very demanding scenes my CPU will get to about 92% load (runs at around 10-20% when idle) and then the clock speed of my Gpu will throttle down to the base clock speed, also dropping FPS.... IS this classed a bottle neck and WILL a better CPU yield better performance? Thank you for any and all responses!

No the i5 will not be bottle necking the 970.

What temperatures do your CPU and GPU reach under the load of Crysis 3?

Nope that's not a bottleneck. When a demanding scene comes it's natural for FPS to drop, that's why it's called a demanding scene.

Really?

 sounds like a bottleneck to me or driver issue or both, maybe his cpu is throttling seeing as its being used so much and bringing the gpu down with it.

even games that "only use 4 cores" mean i'll never go over 50% cpu usage.

well if your cpu bounces upto 94% load, and your GPU load is dropping then it sounds like a bottleneck to me.

 

Thats why i allways ROFLMAO wenn people claim that intel cpu´s dont bottleneck lol.

Because also an intel cpu does bottleneck at a certain point lol

could be thermal thottling, we know how awesome those heatsinks intel use are at cooling 80*c chips.

op should post a screenshot of msi afterburner and core temp side by side after a 10 minutes of gameplay

Stock intel cooler should be more then capable to keep a locked i5 cool.

So thermal throttle does not sound very logical to me.

But offcourse it could be..

I think these results may have been a slight coincident, as ive just played about half an hour of Crysis 3 monitoring everything, my new conclusion is that my cpu is just shy from starting to bottle neck the Gpu. Some points during gameplay my CPU would go all the way to 100% load however not really effecting the Gpu, the Gpu seems to be running at around 98% load all the time, with some slight dips (temps are around 38-40 on the CPU and 65 ish on the Gpu) the change in Gpu clock is where i feel the coincident took place as this time the clock speed only adjusted to the intensity of the gameplay (as it should) thank you for your replys and no im not getting a 280

98% is good.

 

slight drops is indeed a bottleneck, but as long as the drops arent massively under 90% you are basicly fine

Ditch the 970, for a r9 270 or 280. 3.5 gb! hahaha!

3.5gb of ram is enough for that card for now, that card will be crying come 4k (or 1440p) on high in 2 years (give or take sure) and even with sli, but for now its okay.

Hmm, my 3930K (which I use atm at stock) is actually worse than your i5 for Crysis 3 and I'm not seeing my GPU dipping once below 99%. Also if you use GPU-z, you tab out, the GPU clock speeds will obviously go down. Monitor it with something like MSI Afterburner or Playclaw 5 (easy to set up), you can monitor lots of things while playing.

I had them all on another monitor, so that shouldnt be a factor

monitor the gpu load not mhz. if a scene is more cpu demanding and the gpu doesn`t have to do much ofc clock speeds will drop

and yes ,that does happen in crysis 3. demanding game.but its not a bottleneck

the gigabyte gtx 970 g1 gaming puts the best r9 290X(vaporx) to shame.

for that particular game your multicore cpu is much better than his...run your cpu on 4cores and no ht at 3.8ghz to match his and load a demanding part of the game (wide outside area) and you'll see...

If the clock speed is dropping it's because of the thermal margin reducing the GPU Boost. Increase your fan speeds and it should maintain the max boost clock speed.

The CPU might also be close to nut cutting it in that game...crysis 3 is very demanding and it does take advantage of more than 4 CPU threads...from my testing i wouldnt be surprised at all if like the OP mentionned he feel is cpu is ''close'' to limiting his GPU performance in such games...a locked i5 like that is defenetly a GOOD gaming CPU but some games will give it a hard time for sure.

Only welcome in the jungles loves a CPU that offers more than 4 threads. Even in that map a quad core i7/5960x with HT disabled will pin at 100% usage. Also lets be realistic, lets say you're CPU bottlenecked with 75% usage at 30 fps, pushing the CPU to a point it will push the GPU to 99% won't be enough to hit 40 fps anyways.
