Exchange GTX 970 for another card?

James09

Hi Guys,

I know this topic has been beaten to death the past few days but I just want an opinion from you awesome guys on LTT.

In short, should I be considering exchanging my GTX 970 for something else considering the VRAM issue?

When I run Shadow of Mordor and FC4 with all the eye candy at 1080p, I am hitting 3.5Gb VRAM easily.

Personally, I dont think that this is a problem that will be easily solved with a BIOS/Firmware update, though I am far

from being an expert in the matter so correct me if I am wrong. I do see some frame rate drops when playing the aforementioned

2 games. My options would probably bee either the 780Ti or a 980. I am leaning more towards the 780Ti which has dropped in price

considerably. I dont really want to get a 290x due to the excessive power consumption on that card.

So yeah some suggestions/opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Dont drop the 970 for a 780ti. Get the 980 and you will be set for awhile imo

You can't be serious.  Hyperthreading is a market joke?

I'd return it and go for a R9 290/290X. FreeSync is going to be sweet!

Not really worth it right now, i say wait for a fix it should come soon. If you really want to get another card then the 980 is really your only choice since the 780ti while faster then the 970 only has 3gb of vram so unless you get a 6gb version it's not a really good choice.

Mainboard:ROG-STRIX-B360-G-GAMING/Cpu:I5 8400 /Gpu: Galax RTX 2070 /Ram: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB DDR4/ Storage:1TB HDD 2 Corsair SSD PSU : Corsair 550W/Cooling: Silverstone Air Cooler/ / Case : Corsair/Keyboard:Razer Chroma TKL/Mouse:Mionix Castor+Steelseries Qck Mass/Headphone:V Moda M100

Quote me if you when me to reply to something.

I thought as much. I just thought the overall performance would be better, less frame stutters. And I dont really want to get the 290x with the heat and the power consumption.

My PSU is a RM650W GOLD so I should be ok with any single GPU I choose.

There's only a 6GB of the 780, not Ti, you're right.

If you're using over 3.5GB in games, going to a 780Ti will theoretically cripple your FPS, although the games may just be using the VRAM because it's there, and it's slowing down because of the bug with the 970. Shadow of Mordor uses 6GB of VRAM at 1080p for me, purely because it's available, not because it requires it. The game is actually very well optimised with how it uses VRAM, allowing it to keep good FPS while using less of the GPU (with 6GB VRAM usage, the GPU sits at around 60% usage while hitting the game's FPS cap)

Going to a 980 would be the best upgrade if you can afford it.
