HD558 vs HD600 vs DT880 vs ?

xtroria

After buying and re-selling my Q701 due my head simply being too big for it, I'm once again on a journey to find a new and better (read: refined) headphone than my HD558. AKGs are totally out of the question, simply because they're more likely won't fit on me.

HD600 currently is the headphone that i've been thinking about getting, but I'm skeptical about upgrading from sennheiser to another sennheiser, simply because I think they both have sennheiser sound signature (that warm, veiled but overall balanced sound). Does anyone have any experience with both of them and do you think it's a worthy upgrade?

Second option is probably DT880 250ohm, but i haven't really tried them to know their sound signature, many people do say though that it has a slight U-shaped FR that I'll probably avoid (I prefer a more smooth sounding headphone)

For other options, i don't know yet. HE-400 is probably something i could think of, but a 400+ gram orthos probably won't be comfortable for hours and hours of gaming and listening to music. So please put in your suggestions if you have any :D

Fidelio X2 could be considered as well.

HE400 got recessed mids compared to Q701, but got way better lows.

Also there's Shure 1540, although I like the DJ750 better.

Do you mean SRH1440? Yeah i kinda forgot about that. Do you think it would sound somewhat the same as Q701? I think I have a tendecy towards brighter more analytical headphones

The DT 880 is definitely not U-shaped. The treble is certainly pronounced as in most Beyers, but the rest of the range is pretty neutral.

just go for the HD600, its everything you want it to be.

When 2 things meet each other, Quantum stuff happens.

I'm looking for open pair though. BTW, i just looked at AD1000X as probably another good contender but damn both shure and audio technica second hands are find to hard

How would you describe the overall sound signature of DT880 then? I was reading review how it has bass and treble but slightly recessed mids which makes the headphone sounds hollow. Is that true ?

The problem is HD600 isn't everything i want it to be, it still lacks clarity in vocal that other headphones have. I'm one of those people who think sennheiser has a veiled sound :P

I've been reading about those and looks like they're fairly bass heavy.

I actually can't think of anything that has exactly you want. I think Fostex TH600 is up your alley though but they are closed. However, they sound open and they have very little isolation so they might as well be open. Except for some reason they're closed. Lol idk how that works. They are extremely neutral and extremely clear. I'm very happy with them except for the fact that they're more like open headphones than closed and my roommate is pretty loud most of the time so it doesn't work for me.

I don't think the Fidelio X2's will fit him very well, considering he has issues with the AKG series. I barely managed to keep the X1's on my head, and afaik the X2's aren't bigger.

OP: I'd definitely check out the Shure SRH1440 or 1840 if you got the phat stax. or AD700X or 900 or even the 1000 thingie.

Ok, but, did you like the way the AKG's sounded?

That's less true of the 880 than the 770 and 990.

This is why I don't read reviews. Reason being, is that you can't expect a headphone to sound the same for every person, to say nothing of personal bias or general ignorance of what "mids" are.

Hell yes i do, that's why I'm sad i have sell them back just because of the size.

I just watched lachlan's review DT880 and from what he said and the FR chart, yeah i think they actually might sound balanced and slightly neutral

Not overly so, they do it through a treble roll off.

Based on what you have said, I think you would like the DT 880 sound. Just be aware that, like most Beyers, the treble is very nearly hot as Satan's asshole (but in a good way).

Infinitely more fun and festive if that were Santa's taint.

Satan's asshole after a taco's night....

Tube devices seems to 'tame' trebles a bit. Actually, just a bit low responses on the high frequencies. Aune T1's tube DAC seems to do that to HE400's spiking trebles.

I don't have any experience with Santa back there, so I'll have to take your word for it.

So I've heard. Maybe I'll pick up a Vali some day (heh).

So i think it comes down to DT880, SRH1440 and AD1000X. Testing DT880 probably won't be so hard, the big problem would be even trying to find a second hand SRH1440 and AD1000X (no money for a brand new one).

I got an offer from head-fi of SRH1440 for $200, i don't know if it's a good price because i got offered $120 for them before (i know, i should've taken it).

I think SRH1440 will sound more similiar to AD1000X, although i've never really tested any of these headphones

Why the hell AD1000x looks pretty much the same as AD700x?

Audio Technica was my 'first love', but honestly, they only go so far in term of sound quality. The cheap ones are good buys (something like the TAD series), price vs performance wise. Then it climbed very very slowly up the ladder, as such that the AD700x isn't a very good value anymore, a few other brands that sound better with pretty much the same price. The leap forward was taken by the Raffinato. It's certainly a good one, although I'm not so sure about the $700+ price tag. It's the cheap version of the LCD-XC, although compared side by side, the XC is a sure winner.

Because they're lazy and just want to get money :P?

So i found a new DT880 for $210 shipped and all that, i know that i don't need to be afraid of selling them back, they sell like McDonalds in audio world. But the question is just how different is DT880 from Q701
