As a free user, you find a server and get your friends to also join the server. Everyone in the server can hear eachother.

I prefer steam chat because It's already open, but TeamSpeak is still pretty good.

317 is watching. 317 is everywhere. 317 is life.

Its server based VOIP. You can test it out on the unofficial LTTF server (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/48484-unofficial-linustechtips-teamschnitzel-server-teamspeak/). Its mostly used for large gaming communities and teams as it has better audio quality and lower latencies than Skype. Settings are pretty easy to setup. It has wizard for them anyway.

TeamSpeak is a Voice Over IP solution (VOIP) usually targeted at gamers similar in basic principle to Mumble, RaidCall, Ventrilo, etc. The benefit of TeamSpeak over other offerings is lower latency, finer control over audio quality, and robust permissions and security options. With appropriate licensing TeamSpeak can also handle more total users. TeamSpeak has two components:

TeamSpeak server... Unlike centralized services like Skype where all users connect to the Skype server and can chat with any other Skype user they are friends with, TeamSpeak uses isolated private and public servers which can support as few as 5-10 users or as many as 1024 depending on the license the server operator has. TeamSpeak servers can be run by small groups such as clans or guilds or large companies that offer access to clients.

The TeamSpeak client which is used by users to connect to servers and talk with each other. In the client you can connect to a server and then define your options such as microphone and speakers to communicate with others.

While there are free versions of TeamSpeak Server supporting a small number of clients (or up to 512 with a Not for Profit license) to run your own TeamSpeak server you still need some sort of hosting such as a VPS with sufficient bandwidth and monthly transfer rates to handle VOIP. The TeamSpeak client is always free and you can use it to connect to whatever servers you like as long as you have access and are welcome there (most clans don't welcome non-members for example.)

I used to host and manage a 1024 user TeamSpeak server that saw ~900 concurrent users during peak hours and 3-4000 unique users per month and I still host and manage a 512 user NFP TeamSpeak server (when I say host I mean on my own Linux servers, I am not just paying a TeamSpeak hosting company like gameservers)... Do you have specific questions about TeamSpeak? Are you attempting to configure the client and connect to an existing server or are you attempting to set up your own server?
