web hosting server help

silentanarchy

I want to make a forum and review site. But I don't know much about servers, I need help figuring out how much power my server will need because I don't want to pay a company like squarespace to do this. It seems like part of the fun is actually figuring out how to host the server. But If you can recommend a few websites that are good for learning about servers It would be greatly appreciated. sorry if this is a bit hard to read I'm rushing cause I have to leave in a minute.

Do you need to learn more about hardware only or also software?
Do you know what server software you will be using? Something Windows or Linux/Ubuntu?

Read a little bit and research a little bit about the differences and we will know what you want exactly too.
