NAS?

Giganizer300PRO

First of, what is a NAS?

So here's the thing...

At my friend's workplace, they are throwing away some old computers. Is it possible to make a NAS out of them. Like, put all the HDDs and RAM in to 1 and make something. Is that how it works? Then I could use it at home for my family to share files over it. How is it with speeds? Does it have to be blazing fast latest HDDs to even be worth using it?

Thank you for your help.

Yeah, of course you can. As for speeds, it depends on the network. If you're just storing pictures and music, you'll be fine with a 500GB 5400rpm drive on a 100Mb network. For movies, you might want to check if your home network is Gigabit so you can download the movies faster.
