850 PRO

HermanT

I'm looking to buy samsung 850 pro SSD (256GB).

I read a review on anand tech, basically he sais it is the best. And looking at benches I do believe it. 840 pro being one of the best, with its successor 850 pro, which was launched not so long ago, hitting top spots.

Do you agree with this and also recommend it?

I am also thrilled that it is the first SSD that uses 3D flash process ( chip stacking if you may). Want to have it also for "historic reasons".  (I missed the pentium aniversary sadly)

so I've been looking at a good drive, I'm starting to lean towards this one...

I'm looking to buy samsung 850 pro SSD (256GB).

There's really no need for the speed of an 850 Pro... for a similar price to a 256GB 840 Pro you can get a 512GB MX100

Well, since this forum is "Powered by Samsung 850 Pro SSDs", why don't you ask Linus (@LinusTech) himself? ;)

Basically, they're great.

Their price and your usage would determine whether it's actually worth getting it over cheaper alternatives.

Would you recommend a Samsung 850 Pro SSD to someone like myself who does lots of video editing?

It depends on what kind of videos you're editing. It can do well as a scratchdisk if your hdd is too slow but won't be of much use if your projects aren't big enough to where editing off of a hdd wouldn't suffice.

Up to you. It might help to remind you that ssds are getting better and cheaper at a nice pace. It might be worth saving money that needn't be spent to upgrade sooner in the future.

I know they are, but the term "fast" is how you look at it... well in a year the price of 256 might buy me a 512 or 70% out of 1GB, but that still 1 YEAR... corporations have SSDs over 2GB already, but noone will just give it away, they "slowly" earn their money

same with broadwell, I read intel has been making them for half a year (or that it was developed and finalized), they just dont sell it yet...

and I will get their SSD utility too... that utility will enable to clone drives too right?

does anyone know if I could use it to clone drives infinatly or only one time? I've been wanting a cloning software to make a backup of a fresh windows install system drive, with all the configurations on to another drive...

The utility allows you to migrate the data from a drive to a samsung ssd. There isn't a limit to the number of times you can use it.

It's for the pc I'm slowly building, which I expect to finish around march next year. I'm planning to get the PSU and RAM next month, and the 850 and the mobo in december :)

Although I do intend to get another 850 for my laptop once I'm finished with the desktop build :)

If waiting 10 seconds (I'm exagerating, it's more like 3~5) less for your OS, games, etc to load is worth the premium get it. If you, however, do not think such a little imrovement in performance (only when loading. No FPS improvements regarding games) is worth the extra premium, then don't get anything labeled as "pro", "high performance", etc. 840's EVO and MX100's are the sweet spot IMO. You can get more space for less and spend the money elsewhere. Hell, maybe get two SSD's and RAID0 them to have the ultimate performance.

I would never buy a "high performance" SSD such as the Pro's or MX550's because they are just too expensive right now. Most "regular" SSDs will last for more than you need anyway as I don't write 500GB of data daily.

its more about, wanting the best hardware... I can live with it being a bit expensive, as I am only buying one of them and at a low capacity...

I am also thrilled that it is the first SSD that uses 3D flash process ( chip stacking if you may). Want to have it also for "historic reasons".  (I missed the pentium aniversary sadly)

so I've been looking at a good drive, I'm starting to lean towards this one...

850 Pro is the best ssd no doubt. i got it like a month ago. the only reason i got 840 pro, a month ago was the fact that price difference was only US $20. is 850 Pro  better than 840 Pro, well depends. my observations, it boots a tad faster and shuts down pc in like 2 seconds even if its under load.

the best thing about 850 pro is that it is the most optimally performing ssd in market. it performs excellent in all scenarios. like eg, if a game is running, and u copy files, huge ones, u will get almost near to its speeds, 520Mbps.

also it has that sweet 150TB of endurance.

after daily usage of this drive for more than 10hours PC time, i only have used like 0.64TB . and this is because i installed all programs and windows.

so its 110% recommended

Current Rig: Intel core i7 4770K Stock 4.5G, Asus Maximus VI Hero, Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz 16Gb (8Gx2), 2x SLi Gigabyte Geforce GTX 670 2Gb GDDR5 3X Windforce Edition, Corsair Hydro Series H100i (Push), JDS LABS O2/ODAC combo, Fiio E18 KUNLUN, Asus Xonar Essence STX (secondary PC), Sennheiser HD700, Hifiman HE 400i, Beyerdynamics DT 990 PRO 250 Ohm, Sennheiser HD 518, Cooler Master Silent Pro M2 850W 80+, Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced, Samsun4g DVD R/W Combo, 3X Cooler Master 120mm Blue LED fans, LG IPS 23EA73, Logitech G710 BLUE, BlackWidow Ultimate 2013 Edition,Logitech G402 HYPERION FURY, Bloody Core V7, SteelSeries QcK Mass MiBR mouse pad

Yeah, as I saw from anand tech review, the 850 pro is almost always on the top of the chart, and a huge satisfaction to me is its stability and performance consistency...

as for endurance, I am reading about how NAND flash works and V-NAND from anad tech... its painfuly hard to read and understand. If I understood correctly, NAND needed 20V in order to write data, while V-NAND needs far less, was it 7V or something, so it is very durable. It is almost as "endurance" concept is a thing of the past now... and as samsung stated that they have 128gb 850 pro in their labs that had 4000 or 8000TB of data written to it.

very cool stuff...
