Is Mechanical Keyboard worth buying for Programmer?

Ryou-kun

I decide to pursuit my major for "Computer Science/Software Engineer," and I know it require a lot of programming which it involving using the keyboard a lot.

I am curious if buying a mechanical keyboard is worth it.

I currently own GIGABYTE GK-K6800 keyboard. It is a really good keyboard but one thing that pisses me off is the Backspace Key and Enter Key.

If you look at the screen shot at Amazon, you will notice why. It screw up my typing if I decide to type a lot.

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GK-K6800-Modern-Multi-Media-Keyboard/dp/B004KSOEW8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1410815286&sr=8-2&keywords=Gigabyte+Keyboard

I mainly do is Programming (well, starting to), gaming, using Microsoft Office and social medias.

I don't know which mechanical keyboard that I should grab. There are a lot of "switches" to choose, and my cousin told me "Blue/Brown" is a good for typing while somewhat mediocre for gaming. I am not a hundred percent sure about "Green" from Razerblade.

I just want a Red and Black Mechanical Keyboard (Red for Blacklit/maybe Green) and black for the keyboard in order to fit my PC colors. :P

I was thinking to wait for my parents, my little bro and I decide to move into a new house away from this apartment and maybe grab it on the holiday seasons.

What are your thoughts?

It's a keyboard.

It won't magically make you better.

If you have the money for it,then why not.

Browns are the best for both gaming and typing. I would recommend that, You can always get o-rings for the keyboard if it is too loud.

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

They are absolutely worth buying for everyone not just programmers.  They feel absolutely amazing and actually make typing fun lol.   I would say get a ducky shine 3, because I love my freinds one, I think its a great keyboard. I would also say razer, but i'm not sure on their new switches as they are just a cherry rip-off.  (if you can find a black widow from before 2014 I would get it). Also coolermaster make some crackin keyboards. I personally don't like corsair keyboards but 9/10 people will disagree with me on that.

as for you I would say get blue switches as you will be doing alot of typing, but its all down to preference really so I would try to use as many different switch colours as possible before buying.

I personally think they improve typing speeds because I can't type anywhere near as fast on any other keyboard. But many people say it doesn't affect typing speed, either way its worth getting.

They won't necessarily make you type faster, but they do feel a lot more comfortable and satisfying to type on than membrane keys.

I had to take a math quiz as homework where my mom works since the college library computers were all being used, and I had to use a membrane keyboard and omfg... It's like playing at 60 FPS for a long time then going back and playing at locked 30 FPS.

as a newbie programmer i find sitting there bashing on a membrane keyboard after thinking what you have to do for 5 minutes feels better. xD

I highly recommend getting a mechanical keyboard if you type a lot. Browns are heaven for me. Blues are a close second. I type a metric ton. If you read my posts, you'll see this is true.

I recommend you try this one. $105 which is about right for a mechanical keyboard with backlighting. The backlighting is the red part of your Black/Red requirement. Browns are my favorite, and I think you'll like them too if you plan to type a lot.

And now I have something new to save up for. Thanks a lot Builder. (both sarcastic and not sarcastic as I want this badly but I didn't want to spend more money).

If you type a lot, you should get a mechanical keyboard. They make the whole experience of typing much better. You can also type faster if you learn to use them properly - not bottoming out completely, since browns and blues give you auditory feedback.

"Backspace" is a Windows idiom, just like "program" is. On Unix machines (ahem MACBOOKS ahem) it's known as delete, which is more sensible.

Control is there because Caps Lock is useless and that positioning makes it easier to use emacs. It's a Unix-compliant keyboard with modern manufacturing techniques AND I WANT ONE SO BAD!

What are your thoughts?

Definitely Blue switches if you're using it mainly for programming and general typing. You should definitely get one, they can increase your typing speed and just generally make typing more enjoyable and comfortable.

That's funny, mainly because:

1) I do use Linux.

2) Linux is not UNIX compliant. OS X is.

Ah, I forgot to mention two things.

It has to be "affordable" price range and it must have a numpad.

And I only saw two mechanical keyboards that someone has listed.

If you don't mind clicky keys, The Corsair k70 in blues is great but if you find click keys annoying browns are a great option (the k70 comes in browns as well) the steel series 6gv2 isn't a bad keyboard either (7g just has a really simple buy great wrist rest) and that is minimalistic and it's sexy imo.

It kinda is, just not certificated because that costs quite a lot of money.

Guys, remember what's important here. What matters most is that we get into stupid fights about Backspace vs. Delete and Operating systems.

Back on topic... do you have a price range for a keyboard? Would you like a numpad? Try taking this little quiz to see what might suit you best, and tell us what you pick, and we may be able to recommend things!

Define "affordable". Most mechanical keyboard are between $70 and $100. Some are below $70 and many are above $100, but that's generally what I'd call the "reasonable" price range for mechanical keyboards.

I still recommend the one I listed.
