Project: My First Build

Aristocrates

Hi :)

After much thought, and an ancient laptop that only gives me heartache (I'm writing this on it, so I hope it doesn't give me a bluescreen before I post :P ), I've recently decided to get the parts together to build my own PC for the first time; here's the list I've compiled:

Case: Bitfenix Prodigy-M (Arctic White)

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Gene Micro ATX

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro Red cmy16gx3m2a1866c9r 16GB (2x8GB)

GPU: Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX760-DC2OC-2GD5

OS Drive: Samsung 256GB 850 Pro SSD

Application Drive: WD Caviar Black WD1003FZEX 7200rpm 1TB

Data Drive: WD Caviar Blue WD10EZEX 7200rpm 1TB

PSU: Cooler Master V700

2x Corsair sp120 fans for intake through the top dust filter

I can't actually afford to get this all at once, so I'll be getting one or two parts each month until I have everything, naturally leaving for last the CPU, GPU and motherboard, as those are the most likely to get superseded by better/newer components, in which case I'll either get those instead or take advantage of the increased cheapness (I know, for instance, that Broadwell is coming later this year, so the CPU will become cheaper :) ).

I am quite keen on the case, because it is cute and I love it (cough), and on the motherboard, because it is awesome and will hopefully serve as a foundation for the system for many years as other stuff gets upgraded (1150 is, after all, relatively recent :) ). I know 700W is overkill for the system that I've outlined here, but Cooler Master's V series doesn't have anything smaller, and, as the GPU ages, I might want to get a second one to put in SLI rather than just replace it entirely - plus it takes a load off my mind to have a PSU that I know can be trusted.

I am not too sure about the SSDs, however - I went with Crucial because a friend picked that for his build (he's going with the 240GB version though), but I don't know that I can trust them (what I do know is I can't afford the Intel ones :P ). I feel the need for them to be that size because I tend to accumulate quite a bit of stuff in the OS drive that I'd rather not see constantly requiring me to clean it out (the one on this laptop is 750GB and nearly full), plus I have a 100GB Dropbox subscription; as for the second SSD, my Steam folder alone is 312GB (and not everything is installed), so it wouldn't even fit in a smaller model. Yes, I know there's a lot I could put in the data drive instead, but I'd rather not have something annoying me about my shiny new PC that doesn't annoy me about the annoying old one :P

I'm a huge noob, so any input is more than welcome :)

Just save your money and buy everything together. No point in buying things seperatly.

For reasons that I will spare you, that is simply not possible :P

I would change the GPU to a Radeon R9 280X or 290 (maybe you could do that by having a cheaper SSD) but still looks awesome.

Hope you get the money quickly!

(And hey we live in the same country! Olá!)

Olá ^^

Your suggestion is tempting, but, after over 4 years with my current craputer, I have vowed that I will never again use an AMD GPU (unless of course Nvidia disappoints me to a similar or greater extent :P ). Plus there's the sneaky little incompatibilities between Intel CPUs and AMD GPUs (as between AMD CPUs and Nvidia GPUs).

Sempre há quem se interesse por estas coisas por estas bandas :)

Personally I'd get something like a 250gb OS drive and a 1tb drive for games.

I'd also try and get either a GTX 770 or an AMD 280x. The 760 is pretty low powered, but then if you don't play many games it won't be a huge issue.
Judging from the size of you Steam library though that's not the case.

For reasons that I will spare you, that is simply not possible :P

You really should, you'll likely get a better system that way.

Savings. It's a thing.

I've never heard of that, and have quite a few friends running Intel CPUs and AMD graphics cards.

That is a tempting thought, and I did eventually intend to upgrade from the 760, or get a second one to use in SLI, but, considering how bad my current system is, I anticipate that a 760 will feel to me like a 780Ti :P

Update: following the advice I got in this thread, I have elected to go with a Corsair H100i for CPU cooling - I'll update the first post to reflect this :)

Intel CPU's don't get a huge price cut. Hardly 10$ or so.

I've decided to go for 1866MHz RAM instead of 1600MHz because there's no latency increase and it's less than nine euros difference here :)

Lol oops, the CPU only supports up to 1600MHz... so I guess I'll be ready for a CPU upgrade down the road...

A box came by special delivery, how exciting! It is quite light, I wonder what it has inside...

Oh, LOL

But then another package came, and this one I think I can tell from the shape...

Woohoo, now we're talking! Now all I need is the parts for the actual PC and I'll be in a position to start a new thread in the Build Logs section :)
