Sony MDR-7506 or Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro

Slow N Stupid

So In my quest of searching for perfect "bang for bucks" headphones... has well been continuing for forever? and here comes another question which I couldn't find an definite answer for myself...

Quick background -> I play lots and lots of games and music is always on the background (otherwise I feel lonely! D=). My budget is around 140-150e. I will only use the headphone on the computer and my "Gigabyte G1.SNIPER Z97" will be driving the headphone.

So... to my understanding Sony MDR-7506 is pretty much analytical/flat headphone but then I know next to nothing about Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro except spec is better than MDR-7506...

and another question like I've said before my "Gigabyte G1.SNIPER Z97" will be driving the headphone but I don't know if it will be able to drive both headphone properly? (7506 is at 63 ohms and 770 Pros come with 250/80/32 ohms.. I want to buy the cheapest out of 3 which is 250 ohms.. So I want to know if I should buy 80 ohms version or should I just get o2+odac which I don't want to since it's another 200e or so)

And lastly if you want to suggest other headphone at/around same price with those, please do so...

Headphone specs mean nothing, what matters is the kind of sound that you want.

Good? xD Well I heard that 770 has more/better bass but kinda want an opinion from those who owns/have heard from both of them... Since testing them for myself is impossible (Gosh this tech forsaken place)

Never tried the 7506, but tried the 770 pro. Sounds nice, but not my preference, since I'm more toward open headphones. 770 sounded a bit 'claustrophobic' to my taste. I don't like the sound, but it's a matter of taste, not that it sounds bad...

I have owned both in the past and I prefer the DT770 but it is a bit more pricier. If you're looking for pure bang for your buck, you'll be pretty happy with the Sonys.

Thanks for info, do you still remember the differences between DT770 and MDR7506?

Hmm it seems DT770 is more favored... but still no answer to whether will my motherboard's audio chip able to drive DT770 at 250ohms

The dt770 was more v curved and more comfortable after you break it in. Once the clamping force is reasonable after break in, it's extremely comfortable. The 7506 are pretty comfortable out of the box. As for your motherboard I think it would be fine but I can't be sure. You might need an amp.

That's what I'm afraid of since I want to buy DT770 Pro 250ohms version (If I gona buy DT770) because it's 40e cheaper than 80ohms version and it's whole lot cheaper than 32ohms version... But then I don't know if my motherboard can drive/power 250ohms headphones properly... And since after building an PC I'm in kinda tight budget at the moment... Don't want to buy amp which might as well cost over 100e...

Try it and if it doesn't work, grab a fiio e6. Those are pretty cheap.

You could buy the 250 ohm version then buy a FiiO E6 its about $25-$30 in the US and Canada I dont know about how much it would be where you live though.

I also think the DT770's are better than the Sony MDR 7506.

I have never tried the DT 770 but I can tell you that the mdr 7506 is a good sounding headphone but is VERY uncomfortable because of how heavy the headphones + cord is.

So I would spring for the DT 770's .

I just got myself a mdr-7506. I love them to pieces.

It sounds funny to be asking this now (never realized it could make a differences), does the different version of DT-770 sounds different? I do know they require different thing to drive properly (and sound properly) but other than that they are exactly same right?

Yes, but compared to other headphones, no.

Tyl from innerfidelity thinks different impedance of DT880 sounds different one from another:

Who cares. There is no objective evidence to support this. Reason being, the sample variation from one unit to the next is as large or larger than the difference between the different impedance models. Hell, even the channel imbalance between the drivers is bigger.

If Tyl has tested a statistically significant random sample of Beyer DT headphones via blind test and objective measurements to reach this conclusion, I'll eat my words.

Hmm I think I'm wayyyyy more confused right now compared to when I started the thread... So DT-770 sounds different even if it's the same impedance version (different = not just slightly different but noticeable different)... so there is no way to know for sure if DT-770 sounds different across the impedance version because the headphone sound different even within their own impedance version?

Correct me if I misunderstood something...

Are you saying this based on that video?  If so, then remember, that's according to Tyl (the guy in the video) subjectively. The way I see it, there are 2 possibilities:

Either he is:

- Don't know anything what he's talking about, imagining he can hear differences (while in fact there are none), which imo is very unlikely, given his background and what he's been doing. Check out his website, innerfidelity.com. This possibility is very unlikely to me, but I write it down, just to be objective.

or

- He got good ears, better than me, that's for sure. There are differences, they're there, he can hear them, but doesn't necessarily mean anyone else (including me) could hear them also. I may or may not be able to hear the differences, dunno for sure as I have never tried them before. This is the possibility I lean toward to. Also, even if say I could hear the differences, I believe the differences would be very small, not heaven and earth different.

That's the whole problem, audio is very much subjective. I can hear the difference between my Fiio E6 plugged into my Ipad's audio out vs plugged into my Ipad via the line out dock (volume adjusted), but my brother tried and tried, and can't hear the slightest difference. So who's right and who's wrong? No one, that's just the way it is.

Best thing to do would be to go to an audio shop that have test units available, and test them for yourself, to judge them based on your own judgment, not someone else's. Too bad this option aren't always available for all sorts of reasons.

Next would be to just get the one you lean to the most, and forget about everything else. Just get it, and enjoy. Worst come to worst, you don't like it, repack it, and sell it as 'open-box', to salvage some purchasing money, and start a new hunt for another headphone :)

That's the whole problem... If I have audio store that has both or one of them I would have gone there and test it myself (since from my research/quest of finding good headphone+mic/headset has also given me a lot of good information about sound/audio and other shit in this mess...) but the thing is... I live in Finland, which in itself already makes it hard to get anything "exotic" piece of technology and then I live in a north part of it >.> which makes it EVEN HARDER to get anything here, hell I even had an hard time to buy GTX 780ti without having to order online and wait for weeks for it to get here... (one good thing tho, I have really fast uncapped internet lol(fiber))

Anyhow from all of the feedbacks I'll probably get DT-770 Pro 250 and if my motherboard doesn't drive it I'll get FiiO e06 and later on get O2+Odac for me O2+Odac will probably last forever for me (not audiophile nor trying to be nor doing anything related to music except listen to it lol) so it will be good investment

Yes, that would be the best thing you could go/do. And don't get all confused with 'audiophile' term, it means nothing :)

I mean, even if I wanna buy tenth thousands of dollars worth of DAC and amp, who's stopping me (except my wallet, of course), right? You wanna go for the O2+ODAC, or even higher, then by all means, go for it. Don't give a damn of what others will say. I don't have to be a racer to buy/own a racing car, right?
