Get a r9 290 now or wait for gtx 880?

asim1999

i could either:

get a 290

or wait for the 880 and get a £20 graphics card so i can set up my PC. and i wont be doing any gaming before the 880 comes out

will the 880 cost around the 290 and deliver performance close to the 780 ti?

GTX 880 will be way better then a 290. Like in a game like BF4 290 will get 80-90 FPS and a 880 will get 120-130 fps. But if you are going o get a 290 don't get a reference cooler.(With one fan) they thermal throttle so easy. They almost do at idle play any games and its guaranteed to do it.

GTX 880 will probably be priced at $699 for refference card... so yes it will be better but than again more expensive.

@asim1999 if you are looking to watercool, or don't mind the noise, I recommend buying a 290 off of eBay. I have picked up three of them for between $200 and $250. You can't beat that price to performance.

As far as temperatures go, the reference cooler keeps the card at 95 degrees by design. Which is safe, straight from the mouth of AMD's engineering team.

The only issue might be thermal throttling, but it still would beat any card you could get for $250. You could get two of them, at which point thermal throttling becomes much less of an issue, since you have a buttload of GPU horsepower regardless.

You could pick up three of them for the estimated price of an 880. That would crush the 880 in terms of performance, no matter how good the 880 might be.

There's no possible way any of us can know that..

IMHO, I would go with the 880. But I'm an Nvidia fanboy so.... do with that information what you wish. Go with what you have the budget for and prefer if that is also an option.

That is the accepted information right not that the 880 will be about the same as the 780 ti. And the 780 ti plays BF4 at 120 fps. So I'm just assuming that the 880 will do similarly

I'm almost certain the GTX 780Ti does not get 120-130 FPS... There isn't that massive of a difference between the 780Ti and 290.

I know the benchmark shows a 290X, but the 290 is only like 3-5 FPS behind that, maybe not even that. Considering the 290 is significantly cheaper than the 780Ti.

What CPU is that in that graph? thats horrible FPS. Thats like GTX 760 FPS if you have a good i5 or i7 its easily 120 FPS

It's a 4960X at 4.5 GHz.... Most benchmarks I could find present similar results. IDK where you are getting  yours. Maybe you're thinking of 2-SLI?

NO ITS NOT THAT THE MOST RETARDED BENCHMARKS EVER THERE IS NO WAY THATS A 4960X. That was made by an AMD fanboy trying to hate on the 780 ti

Watch this this is a i7 980x so not the greatest cpu ever. This is one 780 ti.

But still you are just spreading the rumors that you have heared yourself. There is no fact behind that... don't get me wrong if the GTX880 will be as good as rumored I'll be selling my 2 way GTX780 Ti SLI but at this point I would not assume that nVidia will bring a GPU on the price of a GTX 780 with a GTX780TI/Titan Black performance. nVidia never did that why would they start this now? If AMD does not bring out something competing nvidia will have a next gen GPU and they will make the customers pay as always. Not that this really bothers me at all, but that's reality and has been for the last years...

Yes, I saw that topic. Kind of outgoing if you ask me. Yes I know the 780Ti is faster than the 290X (Or the 290), everyone knows this. But what got me was when you said "Like in a game like BF4 290 will get 80-90 FPS and a 880 will get 120-130 fps." That did not sound right to me, there's no way there's THAT massive of a difference between the two cards, that's IF the 880 performs similarly to the 780Ti. I know I kind of drifted off from the original topic.

R9 290 NOW while the prices on AMD GPU are that low you shouldn't pass up...the 880 will most likely be stupidly overpriced sh!t once again...get the 4GB Radeon you can find it at 349$ which is a no brainer.
