Move aside Oculus, the Fraunhofer Virtual Reality Cave is here

Uber Hamburgler

Fraunhofer has developed a VR full room technology that allows full immersion that the Oculus Rift does not provide because it allows for movement through the virtual world without a controller and still allows for face to face interaction without the awkward face display in the way.  They are also working on making the Unigen 3D engine work with this system so we may end up with the first games compatible with it not too long after Oculus.  You probably don't have room for it in your home, but this could cause a resurgence of the arcade like Linus and Luke keep saying on the WAN Show.

this looks cool! im going to buy one, how much is... Oh, 1.2M. Nah, no thanks ill take an Oculus Rift instead.

None the less this looks cool

He also said that it was powerd by 13 computers with 2 "high end gaming cards" each.  Assuming that the cards are 680s, Titans, or 7970s, you would probably only need 1 of those for the kind of stuff he showed; maybe 2 for gaming, not that you could link up 2 computers for gaming, I just mean twice the power.  They are also running a 4K wall, a 2160x1920 wall, and 4160x1080 on the floor, so if you cut that down, you save a lot.  Also counting that that 1.2 million probably included most of the initial design cost, so if they turn it into a much higher volume product, it would drop by 80% or so.

Even so, the cost like you said, and the space requirement would keep this to business use and arcades should full VR gaming take off.

We use something very similar at UC Davis, http://keckcaves.org/start. It really helps when working with 3-D data: not so good for gaming but great for numerical simulations and map viewing.

I have a 2019 macbook pro with 64gb of ram and my gaming pc has been in the closet since 2018
