eleVR an open source VR video player for the web appears!

eleVR [el-uh-V-R] http://elevr.com/ is a cool new way to experience VR on the web.

Vi Hart, Andrea Hawksley, and Emily Eifler, who you might know from geeky places on the YouTubes are developing a VR player and the crazy duct-taped grade hardware necessary to shoot spheric footage.

The player is compatible with  the Oculus and the source code is available on GitHub.

Their website features an interactive demo of 360° (2D) footage the team captured.

They keep a blog where you can learn about Hairy Balls and all the theory behind the player.

Also, an Oculus grew googly eyes.

Do you guys think the web is ready for VR? is it too soon?

Is that video even 360p? Also did anyone else out of impulse press w after they realized their mouse moved the camera?

Anyways firstly it has to be higher quality and secondly it has to be seamless to move the camera completely in circles. It really pulls you out of the immersion (as if the low resolution didn't do that already) when you can't move your camera around in circles.

Although ViHart did do a nice job with the voice overs and I know that this is a very early demo and will likely only get better as time goes on. I wonder how much longer until google streetview becomes a VR experience where you can actually walk around.
