Prevent possible "DDoS" attacks.

L.E.D

So in May sometime we will be switching ISPs at my house. So with that we can host a server, I am looking to host a minecraft server and I want to be protected. I know I can use http://www.noip.com/ and hide the ip but I want it to be protected like a VPN I think is what I need, or a proxy, So the ip they get isnt the one to my house? Get what I am saying? They can attack it and it slows the connection to the server not everyone in my house.

Well thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated.

You might not want to do this but hosting with hamachi can get rid of that problem

Get another connection on a different physical line for your server.

Honestly, minecraft and other gameservers are really cheap. Just rent one.

Every player would need that...

I am getting away from paying someone for something that I can do for no additional charge.

pay for someone else to run the server just plain and simple. If your going to host the server its going to use your IP if you're worried about a DDOS attack I guess your screwed, there just isn't anything you can get the server to run though that I know of that would also have a port thats open for the server to run though a option would be hamachi but as you said every player would need to have it. There are lots of companys out there that offer cheap hosting and if its just you and some buddys ask for a dollar or two and im sure if youve got 4 guys ask for like 2 dollars a month to pay for the server.

There are some ways but are very expensive to do so with low latency for games, you'll likely be better off hosting on somebody else's server.

Renting a server is probably the best idea. Also, noip.com doesn't hides your IP, it provides a DNS entry for your IP. Proxy's or VPN's won't help you, since they won't allow port forwards, and are pretty slow, and add latency.

I don't know how big your minecraft server should get, but DDoS's are pretty uncommon, since they require a lot of resources, so DDoS'ing a minecraft server would make no sense from a hackers perspective.

If your minecraft server is not public, or has less than 30 active players, I wouldn't care at all. Also, since you have a normal, "consumer grade"  connection, you usually can get a new IP from your Provider in seconds over DHCP.

Pretty much this. I wouldn't worry.

Use Cloudflare for DNS.

Well in the end I guess I just have to suck it up and live with it. Thanks for the help guys.

You can not hide the server IP because its the servers IP just plain and simple man,

Coudflare does not work with games.

I am almost amazed at how literal you guys are haha. I meant using a redirect to an ip like example.host.com -> 111.111.111.111:11111 but you can just ping example.host.com and get 111.111.111.111:11111

Hmm... Correct. Then there is basicly no way to protect you from a DDoS attack without digging deep in your pockets for money. The only way is to pay for two internet connections.

I feel like you don't actually understand how this all works. Having two connections won't prevent or mitigate a DDoS. Sure, if he uses one exclusively for access to his Minecraft and the other for accessing the internet then sure, he won't notice the attack but it won't stop someone from attacking. As an end consumer, you have no way to stop a DDoS against you, you have to contact your ISPs NOC and have them stop the traffic going to you.

Renting a server is probably going to be cheaper than buying a decent hardware firewall (short term cost)

Use Cloudflare for DNS.

Nobody would be able to connect to his game servers.

A hardware firewall would be of no use. His line would already be saturated with traffic which would deny any legitimate traffic getting to his services.

I love how 4 guys had to quote me to say the same thing.

The reason for that I told him to get 2 connections was so he could have one for his server. I do know that it would probably cost a lot more than renting a server.

If it's only for you and your friends, just don't give your server's address to everyone on the net... Chances are that you're not important enough for a hacker to waste time making a DDoS attack on your server. If they do it's either because you've pissed someone off or by complete bad luck.

There's two main reason (to my knowledge) why hackers (crackers, if we want to use the real term) would make an attack on you and only you.

1. They want something (data, fame, revenge, etc.)

2. They want to test/practice

First, I'd doubt that you'd have anything that they would want out of a private minecraft server and second, if they're only testing/practicing it won't last long.

So stop being paranoid and enjoy your server

Also, If by any chance you want to start a public server... well you should listen to the others and buy a hosted server.

Rent a server, you can't hide your IP by using no-ip, lmao. All you do is go to cmd and type ping (server IP) and there's your IP.

Rent one.

It would be to the general public so thats why I was concerned. Some asshole comes around and maybe I push him the wrong way, what ever happens I guess.

You're not grasping the idea of "hide" very well... Litteraly hide it, I know someone can do that..... You should read the forum clearly before posting, we had discussed that already. Thanks for trying though
