What's my bottleneck?

I have noticed on several games that my performance is much less than it should be. For one example sub 30 fps on arma2 where my friend gets over 60 with ease with a very similar setup. (this is after trying all the setting fixes to make it faster, there is little to no improvement.)

My specs:

CPU: AMD phenom II x6 1090T @ 3.22GHz

GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7950 by XFX

MOBO: ASRock M3A77ODE

RAM: Corsair 8GB

My guess is it is the motherboard, but I do not know why. If you could recommend one component to change for the biggest increase in performance it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Arma is very cpu intensive. your cpu is pretty lackluster.

1. Motherboard don't bottleneck a sytsme. 2. CPU bottleneck. Not to huge tho

my guess would be the CPU. If you'd like to stick with AMD, AM3+ is a good platform and has decent CPUs for cheap. If you'd prefer fewer stronger cores over many weaker cores, go intel and pick up an i5 or i3 depending on your budget

arma 2 sucks, ignore the "amd sucks" haters.

i can run arma 3 better than arma 2 no matter of the settings, its just a badly made game and doesnt care what gpu you have.

The CPU is beast. My friend has it running at like 3.6GHz and man i wish i had one of them...

ArmA is really HDD intense. From my experience with DayZ, and my little experience with ArmA2:OA, it's the HDD. With 8GB you can try to move some files on a RAMDisk. On my old setup, with an Athlon X2, and a GT630, I could play the DayZ mod quite good, after moving it on a RAMDisk.

Faster storage drives do only improve your loading times not your frames output.

Arma is mainly a cpu bound game. Just make an upgrade to an i5 or i3 and your frames will bump up massively.

Well, you never played ArmA on a really slow HDD...

Doesn't matter; the speed of your storage drives dont impact your frames at all. You're not really going to claim a PS1 would get more fps with a bluray drive if you know once its loaded you can take the disc out and continue playing.

the CPU is mediocre. It's not beast. The CPU is the bottleneck, its too slow for the 7950, and ARMA is pretty CPU heavy.

My friend has it clocked at 3.6 GHz with a 660ti and is running armaII Dayz Mod at about the same frame rate as my xeon+gtx760

There are too many factors to justify your statement. The Phenom processors will get crushed by haswell i3, and sometimes even haswell pentium processors.

It depends, they were great processors for their time and they will beat (at least the 6 cores) any i3 in multi tasking. They arent worth the money now, but if i had one i'd keep it.
