Project: Big Daddy

DarrenP

Hi Guys!

So i'm going to do somewhat of a build log as i'm putting the finishing touches on my build. This build all started March 12th 2013. I had taken up an interest in computers after seeing Linus' videos and wanting more performance in games that i soon realized my Xbox 360 could not provide. So that day i ordered and Intel Core i7 3770K, and a RoseWill Thor V2 White. That's when it all started...

From there i've swapped motherboards twice. Killed two 3770K's and 3 motherboards overclocking. Here's a list of all the parts I've purchased through this "fiasco". This build has literally went from one build to two to one. Just one huge money pit...

Intel Core i7-3770K

Rosewill Thor V2 White (Garbage case... Threw it out)

H100I (recently sold)

Corsair Vengeance Black DDR3 1600Mhz RAM 2x4GB Cl9 (Recently sold)

CM STORM STRYKER

Another 2 twin packs of SP120's.

G-Skill Ripjaws 2x4GB x 2 1866Mhz RAM Cl9

NZXT Sentry Mesh x2

So i'm just going to total all that up for you guys...

$7400 dollars total spent. Given the parts i've sold equal about $2000 So... Yeah.. I really should have planned this out ahead of time... OH and I've also bought a Blue Yeti Mic, Steelseries QCK Mousepad. CM Storm Quickfire Pro, CM Storm Sentinel 2, a Performance MX by Logitech and two monitors... It's just been a mess...

It's all just been one expensive nightmare..

Here's what i have now...

Intel Core i7-3770K

MSI Z77 MPOWER

G-Skill Ripjaws 1866Mhz 4x4GB

H100I Push/pull with SP120's

Corsair 900D

Corsair HX1050 PSU

2TB WD RED

2TB Seagate Barracuda

240GB Intel 530 SSD

Windows 8.1 Pro

GTX 780 (In Shipping right now)

NZXT Sentry Mesh

It's been one hell of a lot of fun though. That's for sure. What a learning process.

I'll post pictures when the GPU comes in. Just thought i would get this out there... Watch everyone laugh at me! :P

I feel as though i will add more and the steps that led to this build. And the though process. As i have about 25 more minutes of math and absolutely nothing to do.

So the build plan started as this:

Intel Core i7 3770K

H100I

ASUS Z77 Sabertooth

16GB of DDR3 RAM 1600Mhz Corsair Vengeance

GTX 680 4GB x2

TX850M

Rosewill Thor V2 White

2x 1440P Monitors

256GB Samsung 840 Pro

2x4TB WD Blacks

I was than reccomend the MSI Z77 MPOWER so i bought it aswell as the H100I. I then found that the H100I does not fit in the Rosewill Thor with the MSI motherboard. So i threw the case out i was very angry that it was advertised that it would fit and it didn't. SO than i went out and bought the 2TB WD RED drive, NZXT Phantom, The 8GB of Vengeance Memory, Windows 7 Pro, The TX850M. Just to get myself up and running. See how things worked and such. I than started to hate the NZXT Phantom with every change of parts i bought. So i went out and bought the Corsair 900D. It had just become available. I got the last one on the shelf at Canada Computers. It happened to be the floor model that had just come out of the box maybe 30 minutes before i got there. Bought it for $450 + TAX. Then i bought 2 NZXT Sentry Mesh fan controllers and 10 Corsair SP 120 Fans (5 twin packs). Then i bricked both my chip and motherboard overclocking (6Ghz...) IN JUNE. Sent back the Motherboard got that back within 2-3 weeks. Sent the CPU and didn't hear back... Called them up and they said they never got it even though i had proof. Just no idea where.. So i just let it go and bought a 3570K Also bought a ASUS P8Z77-V board because i was sick of the MSI one.. Used that until about October of last year when i was cleaning my room found the tracking number for he 3770K that got sent back. Called them again they did nothing. Ended up have to tweet the RMA department's head manager to get anything done. This was probably 6-7 PM, i got a new 3770K the next morning! So i re-built my system. And with the spare parts left over built my second system. So i again went to Canada Computers to fill the gap of parts i didn't have. Bought the following: 8GB of G-Skill Ripjaws RAM 1866, 2TB Seagate Barracuda, 120GB SSDNOWV300, CX500, Cooler Master K280, My second copy of 7 Pro, and then i took the build to work. I still had my other rig up and running so by this time i had two rigs the first being this:

3770K

MSI Z77 MPOWER

Corsair Vengeance RAM 2x4GB 1600Mhz

7950

TX850M

2TB WD RED (NO SSD!)

H100I

and the work build:

3570K

ASUS P8Z77-V

8GB of G-Skill Ripjaws 1866Mhz

Intel HD 4000

Cooler Master K280

CX500

2TB Seagate Barracuda

120GB Kingston V300

Win 7 Pro

I then at Christmas time (Boxing day) bought a R9 280X, 240GB Intel 530, another H100I for he work build, another 2x4GB 1866mhz kit for the home build, and i took the G-skill RAM from the work build and swapped it with the Corsair RAM.  and then disassembled the 900D or Big Daddy, and made a mining rig in the K280 with a 7950 and R9 280X. Didn't make very much. However enjoyed it. So then i sold the 7950 on eBay to pay bills. I then bought another 280X and HX1050 PSU and cross-fired them in Big Daddy to make a decent gaming rig. So big daddy had the following:

3770K

crossfire 280X's

4x4GB 1866Mhz RAM GSkill

Msi Z77 MPOWER

HX1050

2x2TB HDD's Seagate and WD drives i have

240GB Intel 530

900D

Win8.1 Pro

I then orderd the CM STORM Styker for the work build so it was more portable. So the work build looked like this:

3570K

ASUS P8Z77-V

Corsair Vengeance RAM 1600Mhz 2x4GB

120GB Kingston V300

Win 7 Pro

H100I

1TB WD Blue

Intel HD 4000

TX850M

I just sold the work rig as i quit my job, and got 800 bucks for those parts and a laptop.

I also sold the crossfire 280X's when the LTC thing happened lost about $60 on them all together.

So now i'm left with just Big Daddy and yeah... it's been one expensive ride...

Bro!  I think you need to really slow down with the spending and plan out your build.  $450 + tax for the 900D is too much.  I got mine from NCIX (canada) for $350 taxes in.  This was when it first came out and I had pre-paid when it first hit their website.  I have spent a small fortune myself but I did have a plan - yes there have been hiccups along the way and some of the plans did change but I researched everything before I pulled the trigger.  That being said, I have over $5000 into my rig.

Happy building!!  Looking forward to some pics of all the machines you have been building and tearing down.

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

Lol that's a LOT of money spent over the course of one year. Over here if I blew a board + cpu OCing, or bought a H100i only to find that it wouldn't fit, I would just sit down and cry. I couldn't even dream of spending so much money on upgrades.

Happy building, can't wait for this beast.

Yeah... It's a good thing i'm 16 and don't have bills ehh? I was very upset when the H100I didn't fit. I was mad at Rosewill for falsely advertising. However learn and live i guess.

The board is literally rubbish. I'm getting rid of it as soon as i have enough money to go LGA 2011 as i cannot find any decent Z77 Boards available anymore.

Wait for X99, X79 is on its way out of the market. I really hope Asus makes a X99 Sabertooth with the same color scheme.
