Tech myths

iAsuno

my article for our project (magazine) is about tech. and i would like to do tech myths. even if the project is over, i encourage everyone to still post so we have a collection here.

Please do not post the obvious.

Gaming is not the main focus of this but the general audience. something like "more ram will make your system faster" or "when your computer doesn't operate as fast as it was, it has a virus"

Austin has A series of vids on this no?

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only a GTX 1080, just a single 1080, where my glorious PC once stood....

For that is all I need, For the Emperor of Man, Jen-Hsun Huang, protects. We march for Nvidia, and we shall know no fear!

that was gaming PCs. this is more for the general audience

SteamOS requires 500GB.

something that everyone knows something about, but you can still post something that only techy people will understand. just that general is the priority as of the moment.

COD Ghosts requires 6GB of memory.

This was true in the beginning but now  they actually patched this officially.

16 or 8 GB to game.

PC gaming is expensive.

You can't build computers.

Any lower-end XXXX generation card can beat an older higher-end XXXX card.

You can download more RAM.

The more expensive it is the better it performs no matter what.

ever heard of magic?

edit: on topic, faster ram (MHz wise) is essential for gaming. (I know you said gaming isn't the focus but this is BS so I'm calling it)

Deleting icons and files on your computer makes it faster (while still having loads of disk space)

The latest is always the greatest (I was thinking of software but it counts for hardware as well)

Pricey makes it spicy (the pricier the better)

closed loops are always better than air coolers.

Laser > Optical (this is going to cause a debate but please keep in mind there are other things to keep in consideration.)

Soundcards are always better than onboard.

If it's slow, add more ram. (don't piss about this, most of the time it isn't a ram issue when a pc becomes slow)

Hard drive size has a noticeable impact on performance.

the more GHz the better.

downloading more ram works.

... I'll add to this when I can think of more myths I remember.

well, it's the size of a console and you can load whatever you want on it, essentially it's a smaller than SFF casing with a pc inside, they can suck depending on the hardware inside though.

Alot of those are rules of thumb to follow, not myths. A myth would be something that is untrue, whereas not all of these are.

Example:

If a computer is being slow (especially older computers) one of the most common reasons in low amounts of RAM. When the RAM is full, Windows has to use page file to continue to work. The additional reading and writing to the harddrive does slow things down (especially since older drives are slow).

New hardware is almost always better. If you compare products of the same level, you'll find that newer stuff does perform better (I'm talking about stuff from major hardware companies like intel, nvidia and AMD).

Steam box is a console killer !!!!

again, you have no idea what the future will bring, there is a huge probability that is the start of the end of "consoles" as we know them. the next xbox or PS will have some OS that will make them even more pc like than ever, and in that respect will change them into custom built computers all with the same specs inside and a custom OS, which is essentially what they are at the moment, however since they will have to compete with the steambox, prices will have to get better and the devs will have to work on a load more features than consoles currently have. Essentially turning every console into a "gaming computer" The deciding factor in the next gen will be which OS has the most functions and which is the most user friendly, it will become a software war instead of a hardware war.

But then again the steambox has the option to continuously upgrade to whatever you want while consoles may or may not have that option in the next gen.

When people say "console killer" they're not saying microsoft and sony will just blatantly give up. They're saying that the software will have to be unlocked for customization in order for them to keep up and therefore consoles as we know them will change, heck they are  already changing (look at what microsoft tried to pull) the steambox will just lead them toward the right direction.

please elaborate as to where I wrote about the amount of ram? I said speed not size. and before that becomes an issue I said Essential

also keep in mind (while still having loads of disk space) was put there for a reason, and I meant noticeably, not theoretically.

newer is better is also false, as you get the argument, for example, I have a AMD radeon R 7 240 I totally smoke your 7750... which is complete bull.

Edit: nevermind, I found the add more ram piece, though in the modern day we live in most computers already have 2 gb ram+, usually viruses are the cause of a slow computer as opposed to ram.

this is the reason people I know delete everything they have to try and make their computers faster and upgrade to ridiculous amounts of ram and complain when it's still slow afterwards, Techies don't give a damn...

This one lady deleted everything from her secondary hard drive because a guy at an IT shop told her it would increase the speed of the computer. The OP wants suggestions even non techies can understand.

That when you are cvleaning out your computer, if you spin the fans o fast i will create voltage from the fans spiining and destroy your components, or if you spin the fans at all with your compressed air that you'll destroy he bearings in he fan. Total bullcrap, both things.

 if your R7 240 smokes a 7750 then my point is valid...

A perfect example where is true is 780 vs 680. Or 4960x vs 3960X. 4770k vs 3770k etc.
