9900k instantly overheating

Got AORUS Master motherboard because Buildzoid said it's the most solid one.

 

However ...

 

I have H115i. I followed Gigabytes OC guide.

 

According to Corsair Link my CPU takes 1.63V but according to CPU-Z it's what I set it to.

 

Temps skyrocket to 100c in seconds and pc shuts off or blue screens. 

 

Updated bioses to see if that could be it. Reset the BIOS CMOS.

 

1st time I ran prime95 temps were okay at 5.0Ghz, around 85c, but PC froze so I restarted and that's when problems began.

 

Any idea what it could be?

What temps do you have in the BIOS?

On a side note, did you sell the 2700X?

Is it the cooler? [i said something really stupid about what could've happened with the aio cooler just pretend this was never here] If it's hitting 100c in a few seconds then it's most likely an issue with your cooler. 

What about idle temps?

I have not yet sold my 2700x.

In Windows it idles at 44c or so.

This absolutely sounds like a pump mounting problem or maybe a broken pump.  Perhaps even a thermal paste issue.  Also, did you remove the plastic from the cold plate or did it come with thermal paste pre-applied?  And don't expect monitoring software to be accurate just yet.

I made sure it's fine. Also, it worked fine yesterday with 2700X.

Have you got any BSODs? If so, do you remember the error code?

Btw, if you can, try to test the H115i on the 2700X and see if the same thing happens.

Hmmm, have you cleared CMOS again?  Just to see what temps are like at stock?

Well, if it happens at stock as well then, my guess would be either the cooler or, perhaps a broken MOBO?

Not sure about the second one since it worked fine before.

 

I'd try the cooler on the 2700X real quick and see how the temps are.

I tried. It doesn't happen.

I ran it at stock. Don't know the temps, but completed cinebench no problem. 2075 score with ram at 3200.

Ran cinebench now at stock and it throttled at 100c everywhere. 1901 cinebench score.

Which H115i is it?  Is it the newest one?  The RGB Platinum?  I assumed that was the one you were using, but if it was the older one then you might not be able to continue with that particular AIO.  I believe the new one, however, performs much better than the previous Corsair AIOs.  I think Tech YES City recently reviewed it.

i wouldn't want to run it on liquid unless you can actually keep the temperatures down, having a water temp of 60c+ is problematic.

It's an older one.

Okay, so I remounted with different paste that's a lot worse and now it doesn't shut down when running cinebench. Temps are as follow: 97, 93, 101, 98, 100, 96, 92, 93.

 

I'm using low end cooler master thermal paste now.

 

Before I was using Thermal Grizzly.

 

However, I added a larger dot on the middle now.

 

I think it might be the shape of IHS. 

 

EDIT: second run didn't make it. Temps went over 105 and BSOD

Whenever in doubt just use more thermal paste than you would need.  For example: EK instructs you to draw a * on your GPU die when installing their water blocks.  It won't hurt anything and it will assure full coverage.

And those are similar to the temps that Tech YES City was seeing before he installed the new Corsair H115i RGB Platinum.  

 

And if you're ok with the hassle you can do the trick that Jayz2Cents used to check his IHS.  Take it out of the socket and spin it on a smooth, flat surface on its IHS.  If it spins then it is convex and isn't making good contact with the cold plate.
