Which one should I get for NAS server: WD Red 4TB vs Seagate Ironwolf 4TB

I`m buying my first NAS server (QNAP TS-231P) and I`m considering buying two 4TB drives to run as RAID 1. I was looking through specs and I`m having hard time deciding beetween those drives.

one's WD's line of nas hard drives, the other is seagate's line of nas hard drives.

 

it's all in which brand you prefer.

Seagate's become much better than I remember them from 15+ years ago, but my WD's over the years have always followed a predictable failure pattern...either the drive fails within a month or so, or it lasts beyond the warranty.  So, personally, I'd have to favor the WD Reds.

 

Based on reviews, I'd say go with which one has the best reviews and warranty, but my personal choice is WD for mechanical drives.

I have been facing the same choice recently and I think I decided to go WD when I build my NAS. I've had good experience with their Red drives as well. 

They also use less power because they run slower than the Ironwolves.

I have used 8x 4 TB WD Reds in my file/media server for 4+ years now. All are still running without issue.

I voted for the WD Red, because I've had fond experiences with WD.

 

However, the real answer is: Whichever one is cheaper.

 

Honestly, the reality is that the Red vs the Ironwolf drive, they are almost identical. They will perform similarly. They will have similar quality. Any failure rates will be within margin of error (a few percentage points either way).

 

They are both great kickass drives, and both will serve you well.

 

So if one happens to be slightly cheaper (or onsale, etc), compared to the other? Just buy that one.
